Chapter 1402: 1401 I’m not a doctor
Wen Family Living Room
The dazzling crystal chandelier illuminated every corner of the living room, adding a touch of warmth to this cold winter night.
A faint aroma of wine lingered in the air. Two bottles of wine and a few side dishes rested on the small table. Wen Jin and Lu Zhiyan each held a wine glass. After clinking their glasses, Lu Zhiyan tilted his head back and downed the entire drink in one go.
“Ah Jin, Young Master Gu is here.”
Auntie Li’s voice came from the doorway. Wen Jin’s eyes flickered slightly. His glass, halfway to his lips, paused and was placed back on the table.
“Ah Kai, you got here pretty fast.”
Standing up, he teased with a smile, then instructed Auntie Li to bring over a set of utensils and a wine glass.
Auntie Li warmly obliged and headed to the kitchen to fetch the items.
“Zhiyan called while I was at Ranran’s house. As soon as I got the call, I came over. It’s late, and the streets are pretty empty, so I made good time.”
Gu Kai walked to the table, pulled out a chair, and sat down.
His gaze swept over the bottle of red wine on the table, and his eyes narrowed slightly. “This is quite a rare find. Where did you get it?”
“You’ve got a discerning eye. This is an ’87 Lafite. It might not be as famous as the ’82, but I guarantee you won’t regret drinking it. My aunt brought it back from abroad—there were only two bottles. Even my dad wanted one, but I didn’t give it to him. I brought it here to share with Ah Jin.”
Lu Zhiyan raised an eyebrow smugly. After Auntie Li returned with a wine glass, he poured a serving for Gu Kai.
Gu Kai’s eyes flickered as he picked up the glass, but instead of tasting it immediately, he swirled the wine gently, raised his gaze, and looked at Lu Zhiyan. “Did you mention over the phone that your cousin is sick?”
“Yes.”
“What’s the illness?”
Gu Kai lowered his eyes, staring at the liquid in his glass. He lifted it closer, took a light sniff, and a satisfied grin spread across his face as if the rich aroma soothed him immensely.
“The same condition as Qian Xiaojun. My aunt read last month’s news about you successfully performing surgery on Qian Xiaojun and reached out to me…”
“That surgery came with significant risks.”
Gu Kai furrowed his brows, his tone low.
“Ah Kai, your surgery on Qian Xiaojun was so successful—what could you be worried about?” Wen Jin looked at Gu Kai in confusion. Granted, all surgeries carry risks, especially rare cases like Qian Xiaojun’s.
But Gu Kai wasn’t someone who lacked confidence.
Back when he operated on Qian Xiaojun, the odds of success versus failure were fifty-fifty. Wen Jin remembered distinctly how confident he had been at the time.
Gu Kai cast a fleeting glance at Wen Jin, then turned toward Lu Zhiyan. “That kind of surgery requires my mentor to collaborate. I can’t perform it on my own. The most critical issue is that my mentor’s schedule is packed solid, and I don’t have much free time either. I just canceled an academic exchange trip abroad earlier.”
“What, are you getting married or going on a honeymoon?”
Lu Zhiyan, sensing Gu Kai was deliberately holding back, narrowed his eyes with a faint smile and looked at him sharply.
“Typical of a former cop to be that perceptive. Alright, as long as you help me settle one thing, I’ll agree to take on your cousin as my patient.”
Gu Kai raised an eyebrow, looking at Lu Zhiyan with a slightly provoking gaze.
Lu Zhiyan frowned. “Ah Kai, you’re a doctor, not a businessman.”
Couldn’t he exhibit a bit more of that noble, selfless spirit to save lives without expecting anything in return as doctors should?
Gu Kai chuckled, his tone helpless. “I know I’m a doctor, but even doctors have their own matters to attend to. Besides, I currently have another very significant patient. The more time I delay, the more uncertainties could arise.”
He slightly tilted his head, sipped the wine in his glass, and furrowed his brows as he continued. “If you can help me resolve my current patient’s issue, I’ll have the time. Otherwise, there’s truly nothing I can do.”
“I’m not a doctor,” Lu Zhiyan protested unhappily.
Wen Jin squinted and smiled. “Zhiyan, this works out well. You and Ah Kai can exchange favors, so no one owes anyone. Ah Kai, what exactly do you need Zhiyan’s help with?”
Though unhappy, Lu Zhiyan stayed silent and listened since Wen Jin had spoken.
“Just now, Ranran told me that Fang Zhiwei might be suffering from depression. Zhiyan, all you need to do is convince her to undergo treatment and accompany her until she recovers. Once that’s done, the matter will be resolved.”
“Fang Zhiwei is depressed?” Lu Zhiyan’s eyes flashed with surprise. He straightened in his seat. “I don’t even know her that well. I can’t help with this.”
“Then forget it. I won’t force you.”
Gu Kai sighed, swirled his wine glass delicately, and sipped the wine gracefully, genuinely dropping the subject.
Lu Zhiyan’s expression changed again at the sight. His handsome brows knitted together as he spoke coldly, “It’s not that I don’t want to help. It’s just that I really don’t get along with Fang Zhiwei. Last time at Yi Pin Xuan Pavilion, when you weren’t there, we almost got into an argument.”
“Zhiyan, aren’t you on good terms with Fang Zhiwei’s uncle? I think you could help Ah Kai,” Wen Jin reflected for a moment before analyzing calmly. “You’re aware of Professor Fang’s passing. Because of that, Fang Zhiwei now resents both Gu Kai and Bai Yiyi. If you can ease her grievances and make peace for them, you could be bringing a pair of destined lovers together.”
“Easier said than done. Why don’t you go, then?”
Lu Zhiyan rolled his eyes, picked up his glass, and poured himself more wine. If he’d known there’d be strings attached, he would’ve saved the rare wine for himself to enjoy slowly.
Wen Jin shrugged. “Think about your cousin’s illness.”
That single, offhand remark silenced Lu Zhiyan. The glass he had just raised was put back down. A few seconds later, he declared, “Fine, I’ll do it. I’ll make sure Fang Zhiwei undergoes treatment. Ah Kai, you must guarantee my cousin receives proper care.”
“Where is your cousin now?”
“Her flight arrives in G City tomorrow.”
“Have her come to the hospital for an exam first thing tomorrow. I’ll give it my all.”
Gu Kai’s lips curled into a subtle smile. He raised his glass, gesturing for a toast. Their glasses clinked lightly.
“One less worry on my mind—I can sleep well tonight.” Gu Kai took a sip, leaned his tall frame back into the chair, clearly in an excellent mood.
Lu Zhiyan’s mouth twitched as he shot Gu Kai a side-eye glare. “Honestly, Fang Zhiwei’s depression doesn’t have anything to do with you. You could’ve just ignored it.”
“Do you think I wanted to? This afternoon, Ranran visited Fang Zhiwei, and she told Ranran she wanted me to accompany her for treatment.”
“Fang Zhiwei still hasn’t given up on you? Doesn’t she hate you?” A mischievous grin spread across Wen Jin’s face.
Gu Kai shook his head. “Who knows? Women’s minds are infinitely more complex than surgeries. Ranran refused her at the time and then discussed canceling her vacation plans with Mo Xiuchen to accompany Fang Zhiwei for treatment. There’s no way I could let Ranran give up their long-awaited trip because of me.”
