Chapter 1401: Can the task be completed by 1400?

Wen Ran lowered her gaze, avoiding Gu Kai’s eyes.

In the living room, there was a moment of silence. A faint chill seemed to seep in from the direction of the balcony, making the room just slightly colder.

“Ranran.”

Gu Kai’s voice remained gentle and warm, but a flicker of emotion flashed through his eyes before he swiftly concealed it, restoring his calm demeanor.

Yet in his gaze toward Wen Ran, there was a trace of probing, mingled with a hint of puzzlement.

Wen Ran pressed her lips together, raised her eyes to meet Gu Kai’s probing gaze, and responded hesitantly, “Sister Wei wants you to accompany her for treatment.”

Upon hearing this, Gu Kai’s brows furrowed, and a shadow of gloom spread across his handsome face. “Did she ask you to tell me this?”

“I didn’t agree to it.” Seeing her brother’s expression change, Wen Ran quickly explained, “I wasn’t planning to tell you initially. I had already discussed it with Mo Xiuchen earlier; we’ve decided not to go on vacation and to stay in G City for New Year’s instead.”

Without hesitation, Gu Kai replied, “Ranran, there’s no need for you to stay in G City. Mo Xiuchen is always busy and rarely has time for you. Now that he finally has some time off, you should take the child and have a proper vacation for a few days. If Fang Zhiwei wants me to accompany her, then let me handle this matter.”

“Brother.” Wen Ran called out disapprovingly, her delicate brows knitting tightly together.

The expression between Gu Kai’s brows softened slightly. “Fang Zhiwei has always believed that I was responsible for her father’s death. Even though Wei Jingshan has already been punished, her resentment toward me still lingers.”

“You know this, so why are you still willing to accompany her?”

“Ranran, her resentment toward me doesn’t matter. What I can’t allow is for her to continue hating Bai Yiyi. Therefore, Fang Zhiwei’s depression has to be treated, and she must recover her health.”

On that day, Fang Zhiwei’s extreme reaction toward Wei Jingshan had even secretly stunned Gu Kai.

He didn’t want there to ever be a day when Fang Zhiwei treated Bai Yiyi the same way she treated Wei Jingshan. Though it was only a concern, as long as Fang Zhiwei’s hatred remained unresolved, and her depression untreated, anything could happen.

“Brother, I’ve already rejected Fang Zhiwei.”

“The more you reject her, the more she will resent me and Bai Yiyi. Ranran, I may not know Fang Zhiwei all that well, but I understand her to some degree.”

Though Gu Kai’s tone was calm, his words conveyed his firm decision.

The sound of footsteps echoed from the staircase, followed by Mo Xiuchen’s deep voice: “Ranran, since Ah Kai is willing to handle it himself, just let him deal with it on his own.”

“Mo Xiuchen.”

Wen Ran frowned and turned toward Mo Xiuchen, who was descending the stairs with graceful steps.

He walked up to her, sat down beside her, and gazed at her with eyes carrying a faint smile. “Ranran, this isn’t just a matter between Ah Kai and Fang Zhiwei; it also involves Bai Yiyi. It’s something he should resolve.”

“But my brother and Fang Zhiwei already have no connection anymore. If Fang Professor’s death is to be blamed, it should be Wei Jingshan’s fault.”

Wen Ran wasn’t being biased; she was simply being reasonable.

Mo Xiuchen chuckled softly and wrapped his broad hand around her shoulder. “That’s how we see it, but Fang Zhiwei doesn’t view it that way. Right now, she’s a patient with depression, and this could either be trivial or quite serious.”

Wen Ran furrowed her brows tightly. In any case, she disapproved of her brother getting close to Fang Zhiwei again.

“Ranran, don’t worry about it.”

Before Gu Kai could finish his reassuring words, his phone suddenly rang.

Seeing the caller ID, a hint of doubt flashed across his eyes, but he still answered. “Hello.”

“Ah Kai, are you free right now? Come over to Ah Jin’s place.”

Lu Zhiyan’s voice came through the phone, causing Gu Kai to pause slightly. “It’s so late, and you’re still freeloading drinks at Ah Jin’s place?”

“I need a favor from you. Come over. The drinks aren’t from Ah Jin’s stash; I brought them myself.”

“A favor? What is it?”

Gu Kai chuckled lightly. With Lu Zhiyan being a pompous cop, what could he possibly need his help with?

“I have a sick cousin, and it’s hard to explain over the phone. Just come over, and I’ll fill you in.”

“Alright, I’ll be there shortly.”

After hanging up, Gu Kai’s long, narrow eyes narrowed slightly, and a smile suddenly played on his lips. With an air of delight, he said, “Ranran, Mo Xiuchen, go ahead and take your trip tomorrow. Don’t cancel your plans for anyone or anything. I’m heading out now to find someone to take care of Fang Zhiwei on my behalf.”

With that, the amusement in his expression deepened.

Wen Ran blinked in surprise, while Mo Xiuchen’s thoughts stirred, quickly grasping Gu Kai’s intention. He smiled and said, “Then hurry along. If you can find someone to handle it, Ranran won’t have to worry anymore.”

Watching as Gu Kai walked out of the living room with steady steps, Wen Ran turned her gaze to Mo Xiuchen. “What does my brother mean by that?”

Mo Xiuchen smiled faintly, took her hand, and led her away from the couch, heading toward the staircase. With an air of nonchalance, he explained, “If I’m not mistaken, he’s planning to make Lu Zhiyan his scapegoat.”

“Brother Lu?”

Wen Ran’s brows furrowed again. Earlier that afternoon, she had offered to accompany Fang Zhiwei, but Fang Zhiwei had refused. How could her brother expect Lu Zhiyan to accompany Fang Zhiwei for treatment?

Noticing her concern, Mo Xiuchen responded dismissively, “Ranran, Fang Zhiwei only has eyes for Gu Kai. She wouldn’t want anyone else to accompany her, not even you. This much is certain.”

“Mm.”

Wen Ran nodded.

Mo Xiuchen continued holding her hand, guiding her up the stairs step by step. A slight curve lifted his sensual lips. “But all Ah Kai needs to do is convince Lu Zhiyan to agree to the task and persuade Fang Zhiwei to accept. Whether Fang Zhiwei approves and whether Lu Zhiyan completes the mission is entirely up to them.”

Wen Ran’s lips twitched slightly.

By this time, the two had reached the second floor. She stopped in her tracks and looked at Mo Xiuchen’s finely chiseled features under the light. Suddenly, she laughed. “Mo Xiuchen, how do you know my brother so well, and how are you so certain he’s looking for Brother Lu instead of asking another one of my brothers for help?”

“Of course.”

Mo Xiuchen laughed merrily.

“Just now, Lu Zhiyan mentioned over the phone that he needed Ah Kai’s help. Here’s a key point you might remember Ah Kai mentioning—Fang Zhiwei’s uncle happens to be quite familiar with Lu Zhiyan. Because of that connection, Lu Zhiyan has a valid reason to approach Fang Zhiwei.”

Wen Ran’s expression turned to one of realization.

“I’d forgotten about that. Earlier, I thought…”

“You thought Ah Kai was planning to ask Ah Jin for help, didn’t you?”

Mo Xiuchen gently ruffled her hair. Once inside the master bedroom, he closed the door with his foot. Suddenly, he lowered his head and kissed Wen Ran’s lips. When she widened her eyes in protest, he murmured, “Ranran, close your eyes.”

“I…”

“Whatever you want to ask, save it for later. For now, let me satisfy myself first.”

“Mmm…”

Wen Ran’s protests were swallowed by Mo Xiuchen as his domineering kiss left her no room to resist. Step by step, he backed her against the soft bed. In the end, she was pushed down and pinned beneath him. The air filled with palpable passion.

The room was steeped in intimacy!
