Chapter 1403: As long as you don’t marry for a day

Early the next morning, Gu Kai came over to send Bai Yiyi off.

After the conversation last night, the two of them, although not lovers, could now interact amicably as friends. The tension that had hung between them in recent times dissipated, and they no longer felt awkward together.

Bai Yuqin currently lived in a rural area near a neighboring city. With the Lunar New Year approaching, transportation was packed and chaotic. Gu Kai decided to personally drive Bai Yiyi home.

Bai Yiyi refused his suggestion without hesitation, “It’s not necessary. Just drop me at the station, and I’ll take the bus myself. It’s very convenient.”

“Normally, taking the bus would be fine, but it’s the Spring Festival now. You’re so thin; you might get completely crushed in the crowd.”

Gu Kai’s sharp eyes swept over Bai Yiyi’s slender figure. Bai Yiyi immediately frowned and retorted unhappily, “You’re the one who might get crushed!”

“How many hours does it take to get to your home?”

Gu Kai chuckled softly, picked up her luggage, and asked nonchalantly.

“Not sure. If there’s traffic, it might even take a whole day.” Bai Yiyi arched her brow, deliberately trying to scare him, hoping he would give up the idea of driving her home.

To her surprise, Gu Kai nodded, “A whole day? Okay, then I’ll plan for a full day’s drive. Anyway, Tongtong is being taken care of by my dad today.”

“…”

Bai Yiyi opened her mouth but couldn’t think of anything to say.

Gu Kai carried her luggage to the door, then turned back to find her still standing there, dazed. Squinting, he teased, “If you can’t bear to leave, why not stay here for the New Year?”

“Who can’t bear to leave?”

Bai Yiyi defended herself, “I was just thinking if I’d left anything behind.”

“You just checked everything a moment ago; there’s nothing to worry about.” After saying this, Gu Kai turned and walked out of the living room.

Once in the car, Bai Yiyi asked with concern, “Ranran and Mo Xiuchen haven’t left yet, have they? Why don’t you drop them off at the airport? I can drive myself home.”

She felt she should have thought of this earlier. Why rely on someone else? Driving herself would be much simpler.

Although driving for several hours would be tiring, it still seemed better than asking Gu Kai to make an extra trip for her.

“Forget about it. Sit tight and behave. If you want to know if Ranran has left, just give her a call. They have plenty of drivers at their house; they don’t need me to send them off. If I really went, Mo Xiuchen would probably see me as an unwanted third wheel.”

“Don’t exaggerate Mo Xiuchen as if he’s some overly jealous type. I don’t think he’s that petty.”

Bai Yiyi lowered her head to fasten her seatbelt.

Gu Kai started the car and hit the road, glancing at Bai Yiyi through the rearview mirror. “Last night, I asked Ranran about Fang Zhiwei. It turns out she really is suffering from depression. Ranran almost canceled her trip because of her.”

“Why?”

Bai Yiyi’s eyes widened in surprise as she looked at Gu Kai.

After speaking, she thought of something and added, “Is it because Ranran wants to stay by Fang Zhiwei’s side during her treatment? Or is Fang Zhiwei actually hoping for you to stay with her instead?”

“You’re right on both points.”

Gu Kai shot her a glance before turning his eyes back to the road ahead.

“Fang Zhiwei developed depression because of you?” Bai Yiyi pressed her lips together, hesitated briefly, and then asked softly.

Gu Kai frowned lightly, “I don’t know. It might be because of her grief over her father’s death.”

“So if Ranran goes on vacation, does that mean you’ll have to stay with Fang Zhiwei?” Bai Yiyi felt awkward raising such questions, so she smiled faintly. “It’s only right for you to accompany her. Maybe if you’re with her, she’ll recover more quickly.”

“Do you want me to stay with her?” Gu Kai asked as he slowed the car after making a turn, his gaze shifting to Bai Yiyi.

His gaze was so piercing that Bai Yiyi’s heart suddenly clenched. She lowered her eyes, avoiding his stare. “Just focus on driving.”

“Bai Yiyi, you don’t want me to, do you?”

Gu Kai’s sharp gaze lingered on her for a few seconds before he turned forward again, a smirk tugging at his lips.

He didn’t believe Bai Yiyi could be so generous as to calmly let the man she liked spend time with his ex-girlfriend.

Unless she no longer had feelings for him.

“I don’t want you to stay with her.”

Bai Yiyi’s voice was soft but clear in the confined space of the car. Hearing this, Gu Kai’s tense expression eased, and a hint of warmth surfaced in his eyes.

The curve of his lips deepened slightly.

“Gu Kai, you left something unsaid last night, didn’t you?” Bai Yiyi suddenly switched the subject, her clear, watery eyes fixed on the warm smile gracing his lips. Seeing him radiate such warmth, she too felt comforted.

Gu Kai’s eyes flickered slightly. Instead of answering, he asked in return, “What do you think?”

Bai Yiyi lowered her gaze, landing it on his hand gripping the steering wheel. His fingers were distinct and graceful, pale and slender—a pair of exceedingly beautiful hands.

Just looking at his hands made her heart inexplicably light. This strange feeling caused Bai Yiyi to furrow her brow slightly. During the days when Gu Kai treated her coldly, she had consciously suppressed her feelings for him.

She had even considered forgetting him entirely.

But ever since his words last night, the calm lake of her heart had been stirred into ripples, its tranquility lost.

“Last night, you said that even if we can’t be together, you hope I won’t leave G City.”

Gu Kai’s hand on the steering wheel tightened slightly, the curve of his lips vanishing and compressing into a straight line.

“That’s right. If you remain in G City, even if we’re not together, I can still see you anytime. That way, I feel at ease.”

Gu Kai didn’t look at her, but admitted with unflinching honesty. His low, resonant voice carried a subtle tenderness that stirred the soul.

Bai Yiyi pressed her lips together, refraining from probing further and instead murmured, “Fang Zhiwei’s depression isn’t your fault, but I’m sure you feel some guilt about it. There are too many obstacles between us. Perhaps we’ll never truly be together.”

“Do you regret it?”

Gu Kai’s expression darkened, his voice low and slightly hoarse.

“No.”

Bai Yiyi’s lips curved into a faint smile, though her brows carried a tinge of sorrow. “I already made my choice, and I won’t regret it. As long as you don’t marry, I’ll stay in G City.”

Gu Kai was momentarily stunned before his lips curved into a warm, captivating smile. “Bai Yiyi, remember what you said today. In the future, don’t allow any man to act disrespectfully toward you. And don’t let anyone confess their feelings without cutting them off.”

“You…”

Bai Yiyi’s eyes widened in surprise.

Could it be that he overheard Zhang Siming’s words that night? How was that possible?

Even if he’d seen Zhang Siming hold her hand, it was unlikely he’d heard what was said.

Gu Kai suddenly swerved and parked the car on a stretch of road where stopping was not allowed. He turned to her, gazing deeply. “This isn’t a parking zone. Promise me what I just said.”

“How could you possibly have heard Zhang Siming’s words?” Bai Yiyi blinked in confusion, dumbfounded by his actions. Stopping where parking wasn’t allowed? This man was utterly reckless.
