Chapter 1344: 1343 not only self-torture
Under the soft moonlight, Bai Yiyi met Gu Kai’s gaze, which carried a trace of amusement. Somewhere deep within her heart, she felt herself softening, warmth trickling into her soul like a clear spring, melting a corner of the icy wall she’d built over the years.
She couldn’t help but smile. “Really? Are you so certain?”
“Of course. Do you think I’d bring you here without knowing for sure who I am?”
Gu Kai chuckled lightly, locking eyes with her for a moment before turning to the tombstone and looking at his mother’s photo. “Mom, I’ve never forgotten what you once said to me. When I find a girl I truly like, I must bring her to meet you.”
This time, Bai Yiyi quietly listened.
She tilted her body slightly, lifting her face to look at Gu Kai while his warm and pleasant voice continued, “Tonight, I brought her here. And, by the way, I want to tell you something secret—Dad doesn’t even know yet. I brought Yiyi to meet you first.”
At the end of his words, there was a hint of teasing in his tone. Bai Yiyi watched Gu Kai’s smile at the corner of his lips, and her newly softened heart suddenly felt as if it had been gently pinched by an invisible hand, spreading a faint ache.
So suddenly, she found herself feeling sorry for this man.
She had grown up without a father’s love, but this man beside her had also carried the guilt of losing his sister from an early age, watching his mother drown in tears every day until she left prematurely.
The wounds he carried in his heart were no less than hers.
Only he had hidden them away.
“Mom, Yiyi will be your daughter-in-law in the future. She’s already given you an intelligent and adorable granddaughter. Someday, I’ll bring Tongtong to meet you…”
Listening to Gu Kai speak to his mother, Bai Yiyi felt as though she could imagine how close his relationship with his mother used to be—how they must have shared everything without reserve.
His personality wasn’t cold or aloof. Unlike Mo Xiuchen, whose demeanor exuded frostiness, this man had a warmth about him. Wearing a white coat, he appeared refined and elegant; without it, he seemed rebellious and unrestrained.
Of course, her deepest impression of him included his sharp tongue.
Thinking of this, she couldn’t help but want to laugh again.
“Yiyi, what are you laughing at?” After finishing his words to his mother, Gu Kai turned his head and saw Bai Yiyi’s lips curled into a smile. His eyes flickered slightly as he looked at her curiously.
Bai Yiyi shook her head. “It’s nothing.”
“Let’s go. We’ll bring Tongtong next time,” Gu Kai said as he held her hand. Together, they faced the tombstone. “Mom, Yiyi and I will bring Tongtong with us next time to see you.”
Bai Yiyi bowed respectfully and then left with Gu Kai.
Back at the car, Bai Yiyi took off her jacket while Gu Kai opened the rear door and placed it on the seat.
As they got into the car, Gu Kai’s voice softly broke the silence. “Even though Fang Zhiwei and I dated, I never brought her to meet my mother.”
Bai Yiyi was fastening her seatbelt when she heard him. Her hands froze mid-motion.
She turned to meet Gu Kai’s serious and handsome expression, and that elusive, indescribable emotion in her heart surfaced once more.
“Why?”
She heard herself ask the question, though she wasn’t sure why she wanted to know.
Gu Kai held her gaze. “I tried hard to like her, but deep down, I knew I didn’t. My mom told me once that I should only bring the girl I truly like to see her.”
Because he didn’t like her, he never brought Fang Zhiwei to his mother.
He could deceive himself, but he didn’t want to deceive his mom.
Bai Yiyi felt a sudden pang in her heart. “Gu Kai… I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize to me,” Gu Kai replied, his eyes dimming slightly. “Yiyi, tonight I brought you here because you’ve always lacked faith in our future.”
“I…”
Bai Yiyi opened her mouth, but before she could finish, Gu Kai suddenly leaned closer.
—
Bai Yiyi pressed her lips together and whispered softly, “Let’s go back.”
“Alright.”
He had something to say but swallowed it back.
Bai Yiyi’s gaze swept over his injured hand. “How about we switch? I can drive.”
“No need. I’ll drive—you can take a break,” Gu Kai said, smiling gently as he reached out and fastened her seatbelt for her.
Bai Yiyi was startled and felt slightly unaccustomed to his attentiveness.
However, recalling how he used to be just as considerate toward Fang Zhiwei, she realized that if he wanted to, he could spoil a woman to the heavens.
On the way back, neither of them spoke.
The car was quiet. Gu Kai focused on driving while Bai Yiyi sat silently in the passenger seat, her face tilted slightly, her gaze fixed on the window outside. Yet her thoughts were consumed by the man beside her.
**
When they returned home, it was already midnight.
The round trip had taken over an hour. As the car stopped at the villa entrance, Gu Kai turned to Bai Yiyi in the passenger seat. “Tomorrow morning, I’ll come pick you up for work.”
“No need—I’ll drive myself to work,” Bai Yiyi quickly shook her head, still preferring to keep a low profile.
Gu Kai sighed helplessly. “Yiyi, you’re too stubborn. I’m your boyfriend now, and you’re my girlfriend, as well as the mother of my daughter. You have every right to enjoy my care.”
“No, let’s just carry on like we used to. That suits me just fine.” Bai Yiyi smiled. “If you suddenly start treating me too well, I won’t know how to manage. Besides, as long as you don’t scold me again, that’s enough for me.”
“Are you a masochist?”
“Hearing you talk like this feels more like the real Gu Kai.” Bai Yiyi chuckled lightly. “Maybe I am a bit masochistic.”
Gu Kai’s eyes flickered. “Should I stay not leave tonight?”
His lips curved into a half-smile, his gaze carrying a playful wickedness as he looked at Bai Yiyi.
Bai Yiyi’s heart skipped a beat. “Don’t, you should leave. I don’t have the habit of living with an unmarried man.”
“Bai Yiyi, you’re not only a masochist but also have a filthy mind.” Gu Kai wasn’t angry but instead matched her tone, calling her full name.
