Chapter 1343: Whatever I like, my mom will like too.
Originally, the chill outside the car was biting.
But Bai Yiyi was enveloped in a warm coat, one imbued with the familiar masculine scent she recognized, along with a faint trace of disinfectant.
Her heart skipped a beat. As she lifted her gaze, her eyes collided with Gu Kai’s clear, bright stare.
His voice was soft, yet in the stillness of the deep night, it resonated clearly in her ears. Under the dim moonlight, she saw his lips slightly pressed together, his gracefully defined brows and sharp, chiseled features tinged with a faint layer of emotion.
Instinctively, she pursed her lips, “Why did you bring me here?”
Gu Kai’s gaze locked onto her deeply, his voice low and gentle, lacking any hint of coldness despite the frosty night, “Put on the coat first.”
As he spoke, he grabbed her arm, ready to help her put it on.
“What about you?”
Bai Yiyi looked at the thin wool sweater he was wearing. If she took his coat, what would he wear?
“I’ll be fine. You’re so frail; you’re prone to catching a cold. Wear it properly, and I’ll take you to see my mother.”
As the words left his mouth, his tone paused slightly, and his speech slowed down a bit.
Bai Yiyi’s expression shifted slightly.
Even though she had guessed it, hearing him say it out loud still sent waves rippling through her heart.
After hesitating for a moment, Bai Yiyi’s voice rang out with a trace of tension, “Gu Kai, is this really okay? I’m not ready for this.”
She had agreed to start dating Gu Kai without much hope, simply wanting to give it a try.
But to be honest, today was only their very first day as a couple. He was already bringing her to meet his mother—how could she not feel anxious?
Gu Kai caught her unease and nervousness in his eyes. Instead of speaking, he grabbed her arm again to help her put on the coat, slipping his palm down to wrap her soft hand in his own. Then he turned, holding her hand as they climbed the steps to the cemetery, slowly advancing together.
“There’s no need to be nervous. My mom is kind and loves me. Whatever I like, she’ll definitely like too.”
Years ago, when his mother left them, she hadn’t only made him promise to find his sister but also said that if, in the future, he found someone he loved, he must bring that girl to her grave so his mother could see her.
She said those words on the night before she passed away.
As they climbed step by step up the staircase, scenes from that night surfaced in Gu Kai’s mind.
“Ah Kai, Mom is probably not going to be able to stay with you and Dad anymore, nor get the chance to meet your sister.”
On the hospital bed at Kangning Hospital, the woman’s face was weary, her voice fragile as she lay pale and weak. Beside the bed, Gu Kai gripped her hand tightly, his eyes brimming with tears of sorrow.
“Mom, you’ll definitely live a long life. You’ll wait for my sister to come back. You can’t leave me and Dad. In the future, you still have to help me raise my children.”
Back then, he was just a teenager.
Hearing his words, the woman’s pale face lit up with a gentle smile, her gaze filled with reluctant affection. “Ah Kai, you’ve grown up. When Mom is gone, you must take good care of your father. Don’t let him smoke, and don’t let him drink too much alcohol.”
“Mom, I don’t want to hear you talk like this.”
Gu Kai’s voice trembled slightly with emotion. He turned his head to stare at the ceiling, forcing back the tears in his eyes.
“Silly child, you’re going to be a doctor in the future. Life and death will play out in front of you every day. You need to be a strong man and not shed tears.”
“Mom.”
“Listen to Mom. After I’ve passed, take good care of your father. Don’t give up on finding your sister. Just now, I dreamt about her… In the future, if you find a girl you like, remember to bring her to meet Mom.”
…
Gu Kai held Bai Yiyi’s hand as they stood before his mother’s grave. His gaze softened, fixed upon the woman in the photo on the tombstone. A warm smile tugged at the corners of his lips. “Mom, I’ve brought your daughter-in-law to meet you.”
“Stop saying nonsense.”
Bai Yiyi gasped in shock as she lifted her head to look at Gu Kai.
They were only boyfriend and girlfriend right now. No one could predict the future.
Gu Kai chuckled, gently pushing her forward a bit, as if to let his mother get a better look at Bai Yiyi.
Even though the night was dark, the moonlight tonight allowed Bai Yiyi to make out the smiling, elegant, and graceful woman carved into the tombstone.
This was the woman her father had thought of for a lifetime—someone for whom he had hurt Bai Yiyi’s mother and neglected her as a daughter.
Yet, looking at this woman whom she was meeting for the first time, Bai Yiyi found herself unable to dislike her.
“Auntie, I’m Bai Yiyi.”
Bai Yiyi pursed her lips and spoke softly, “I’ve been wanting to visit you for a very long time, but I never dared to come. Since I’m here tonight, I have to say I’m sorry.”
Beside her, Gu Kai placed his hand lightly on her shoulder, his deep voice murmuring in her ear, “Yiyi, what are you apologizing for?”
Bai Yiyi glanced up at him briefly before turning her eyes back to the woman on the tombstone. “Auntie, I’m Fu Jingyi’s daughter. Back then, he stole Ranran away, causing you and your daughter to be separated, leading to your early demise.”
Gu Kai’s tall figure stiffened, his lips pressing into a tense, straight line. This time, he did not stop Bai Yiyi.
Suddenly, he understood.
The knot he had always been unable to untie, the grudge he could never set down—Bai Yiyi couldn’t set it down either.
Her voice was gentle and soft, slipping through the night wind, “Auntie, you must hate him very much. Honestly, I hate him too. Saying this is not to make you accept me, but because I truly loathe him. But no matter how much I hate him, I cannot change the fact that I am his daughter.”
Bai Yiyi’s words came out disjointed and rambling. Her emotions were in turmoil. Facing a woman who had been hurt and ultimately passed away because of her father, she now found herself together with the woman’s son.
Nervous and uneasy, she was afraid that the woman in the tomb would not accept her.
“Gu Kai used to hate me too. But fate plays its hand—we met despite all odds, and now we even share a daughter, Tongtong… Yesterday, I mustered up the courage to suggest trying to date him. I don’t know if he truly likes me, or if it’s just for Tongtong’s sake.”
Gu Kai’s brows furrowed slightly. A flicker of emotion passed through his eyes as he looked at Bai Yiyi. His tightly pursed lips pressed together even harder.
“…Still, I want to try dating him, Auntie. Gu Kai brought me here tonight, but I wasn’t prepared for this. I’m nervous and afraid that you won’t like me.”
As she spoke, there was no response. Aside from the wind carrying the chill of late autumn, the cemetery was suffused with an air of faint sadness.
“Auntie, I’ve said so many confusing things just now. If you don’t dislike me, please bless Gu Kai and me, help us overcome the trials of reality together, okay?”
“Don’t worry, my mom won’t dislike you. Just from all the things you said just now, she must already like you.”
Gu Kai’s hand on her shoulder tightened slightly, his lips curving into a faint smile.
