First Immortal of the Sword
Chapter 3142 - One Man Faces a Group of Enemies
The power of the Laws churned beneath the dome of heaven, interweaving into all manner of unbelievable visions of the Grand Dao.
A group of grand, imposing figures appeared beneath the distant dome of heaven, hovering in midair. All of them were as glorious as the midday sun, their presences filling the nine heavens and the ten earths!
A deathly silence descended over the crowd. Even the birds fell silent.
The cultivators filling the tens of thousands of miles around Snowy Gale Mountain looked up, excitement, astonishment, and eagerness written all over their faces.
Heavenly Sovereign E, Heavenly Sovereign Wen, Heavenly Sovereign Ling, Heavenly Sovereign Changhen, Heavenly Sovereign Wuxu, and Heavenly Sovereign Yaoguang.
Six Heavenly Sovereigns had arrived. Six!
Every last one of them emanated the formless divine majesty of a ruler presiding over the nine heavens. There was no need for them to even say anything; the auras emanating from them were enough to make heaven and earth seem dimmer by comparison.
When the crowd gazed up at them from the ground, they seemed endlessly distant, lofty and unreachable. It was as if they were mere ants gazing up at the heavens!
Over on the mountaintop, Ruo Su took all of this in calmly. She was every bit as composed as before.
Heavenly Sovereign Ku Xuan whispered, “Those old dogs have been pushed to the brink of madness. They’ve even brought their true bodies. They’re obviously terrified that something will go wrong.”
Bringing their true bodies meant that they were utterly determined. There was no room left to maneuver; they wouldn’t rest until Su Yi was dead—or until they were!
It had been like this at the end of the Devastation, too.
Heavenly Sovereign Qingyi gazed at the six Heavenly Sovereigns in the distance. “The six of them aren’t the only ones who’ve been pushed to the brink of madness.”
Luo Yan, Lu Ye, and Pu Xuan were outwardly calm, but their hearts were heavy. Who could really remain detached so soon before a grand battle?
Practically instinctively, all eyes turned toward the founder. Su Yi was still reclining in his wicker chair, leisurely conversing with Ruo Su. There was no sign of nervousness on his face.
Heavenly Sovereign E’s gaze swept over. Then, he swept his sleeve through the air.
In an instant, every cultivator gathered around Snowy Gale Mountain was enveloped in darkness. They reappeared thousands of miles away.
“This is a forbidden ground. Those with no business here are not to approach!” Heavenly Sovereign E said coldly. “Those who break this rule must die!”
Like a ruler issuing a decree.
The crowd shook, all of them as silent as cicadas in winter.
The particularly keen-eyed could tell that Heavenly Sovereign E had done this because he suspected that there were malicious actors mixed into the crowd. He didn’t want anyone to cause trouble at this juncture. That was why he’d cleared out the area around the mountain.
“Su Yi! We’ve come to watch the ceremony. Why not rise to greet us? This is no way to welcome guests!” Heavenly Sovereign E turned his gaze toward the peak, his voice rumbling far and wide with imposing force and grandeur.
The atmosphere was increasingly oppressive.
Over on the peak, Ruo Su transmitted, “Old Lord Gouchen is leading the group of Secluded Ones. He and the others are hiding in the shadows. It seems they won’t reveal themselves lightly.
“They’ve already made themselves clear. No powers of the Far Shore are permitted to interfere, no matter who they are. If they do, the Secluded Ones will slaughter them without mercy!”
She gestured to herself. “That goes for me, too.”
Su Yi inclined his head. “That’s more than good enough.”
Ruo Su gazed intently at him. “Then I’ll gather my people and leave. Take care of yourself. No matter what happens, you... have to live on!”
She waved a fair hand in farewell, and then vanished into thin air, taking Ling Ran and the Qiongqi Mountain Lord with her. They left no trace of their presence behind.
In truth, although Ruo Su had been here this entire time, neither the six Heavenly Sovereigns nor the distant onlookers had ever sensed her or her companions’ presences. Even their disappearance went unnoticed.
These were Ruo Su’s abilities. She was an extraordinary existence even by the standards of the Far Shore.
Su Yi put away his jug of wine, then rose and put away his wicker chair. Only then did he gaze at the six Heavenly Sovereigns beneath the distant dome of heaven.
“My ‘hospitality’ involves plucking your heads and rebuilding the Heart-Tempering Sword House on a foundation of your flesh and blood,” Su Yi said calmly. “But there’s no real rush. Let’s wait until the Threelives Buddha gets here. Then, I’ll send you all on your way together.”
He wasn’t loud, but his voice resounded clearly throughout heaven and earth.
Countless cultivators gasped. Still others clucked their tongues.
Heavenly Sovereign E laughed coldly, but he couldn’t be bothered to argue. He said directly, “Didn’t you say that two members of the Heart-Tempering Sword House planned to prove their Daos and become Heavenly Sovereigns? You invited us to attend the ceremony, so why not let us watch their ascent, too?”
“Why not?” Su Yi gestured to Lu Ye and Luo Yan. “These are my past life’s first and second disciples, Lu Ye and Luo Yan. Today, they’ll prove their Daos and become Heavenly Sovereigns!”
The six Heavenly Sovereigns looked over, their expressions shifting.
The only ones on the peak they really cared about were Su Yi, Ku Xuan, and Hua Qingyi. Lu Ye, Luo Yan, and the others were no match for them, so they were at most additional, notable targets for annihilation.
But then, all of them knew that Lu Ye and Luo Yan, the would-be Heavenly Sovereigns, were central to this battle. If not for them, there’d have been no need for the Heavenly Sovereigns to come personally.
“And this is my third disciple, Pu Xuan,” said Su Yi, suddenly indicating to him. “He’ll have even more opportunities to become a Heavenly Sovereign than his senior apprentice siblings. Once you’re dead, he’ll have his pick of the Eternal Thrones you leave behind.”
No one knew what to say to that. They’d yet to even fight, but Su Yi was already planning what he’d do after his victory. The crowd couldn’t help but find this strange, even absurd.
“Shameless boasting!” Heavenly Sovereign Wen snorted coldly. “You think you, Ku Xuan, and Hua Qingyi are enough to defeat all of us?”
Su Yi shook his head. “No, I can do it myself.”
The crowd was stunned. The countless cultivators watching from a distance were wide-eyed and tongue-tied, to the point that they almost dared not believe their ears.
The six Heavenly Sovereigns frowned. They understood Su Yi’s character, and they knew that he wasn’t the type to bluff or make idle boasts.
Nonetheless, they found this statement absurd. By himself? He thinks he can beat us all on his own? Where does he get his confidence?
Heavenly Sovereign Ling suddenly said, “Don’t tell me you’ve placed an inescapable net over the entire Snowy Gale Mountain?”
The other Heavenly Sovereigns’ eyes narrowed. They couldn’t help but wonder the same thing. When they arrived, they discovered no sign of any arrangements of any kind on the slopes of Snowy Gale Mountain, not even a single formation.
But that was highly unusual, and it was completely different from what they’d expected. After all, logically speaking, Su Yi was the one who’d initiated this whole thing. Surely he’d prepared at least a little?
It stood to reason that he had at least a few soldiers at his command, or a killing formation or two, or something along those lines.
Who could have imagined that he had nothing of the sort?
Su Yi said calmly, “All of you can settle down. Get your hearts off their tenterhooks and put them back where they belong. When I kill my enemies, I need nothing but the three-foot edge of my sword. I’ve always disdained resorting to such unseemly little tricks.”
He spoke forthrightly and openly.
The crowd of onlookers included no small number of sword cultivators, and when they heard that, their blood heated up. His words resonated with their hearts. Indeed. No matter the age, sword cultivators have always cut down every obstacle in their path. What could they possibly need besides their swords?
“Hmph! We’ll just have to see if your edge is sharp enough for that!” Heavenly Sovereign E said with a cold snort.
“You’re saying you really want to fight us with nothing but your own strength?” Heavenly Sovereign Changhen said gravely. It wasn’t just him; the others found it hard to believe, too.
“You’ll soon see for yourself whether I’m serious or not,” said Su Yi, shaking his sleeves and gazing at the flurries filling the sky. “I’d actually like to ask you something. Dare you fight me to the death? Can you promise not to flee for your lives?”
His voice boomed far and wide. The Heavenly Sovereigns' eyes flashed, their expressions shifted.
“Why wouldn’t we dare?” Heavenly Sovereign E said indifferently. “We’re just afraid you’ll die too quickly to truly satisfy us!”
“We came all this way. There’s no way we’ll relent until you’re dead, Su Yi!” Heavenly Sovereign Changhen said calmly.
The other Heavenly Sovereigns didn’t comment, but there was no disguising the murderous intent in the depths of their gazes.
Su Yi clapped and applauded. “Excellent! I hope you’re capable of that!”
He suddenly turned and gazed into the distance. “Threelives Buddha, if you’re here, why not show yourself?”
A lotus platform instantly appeared in the distance. The Threelives Buddha sat atop it in wide-sleeved monk’s robes and smiled faintly. “This humble monk naturally cannot refuse your invitation, Fellow Daoist Su.”
Boom!
The crowd was instantly in uproar. The Threelives Buddha was effectively the tenth Heavenly Sovereign of the Eternal Heavens Domain!
However, those who’d actually laid eyes on him were few and far between; you could practically count them on your fingers. Thus, the general populace saw him as an incomparably mysterious figure.
He appeared out of nowhere, riding on his lotus platform. Wherever he went, Sanskrit chanting echoed throughout heaven and earth. The majesty of a supreme Buddhist was on full display.
Su Yi glanced at him. “Is this perhaps just one of your bodies?”
The Threelives Buddha shook his head. “The trend of the future is on the line. To forestall any possibility of your survival, I naturally cannot afford to hold anything back.”
“Oh,” said Su Yi. “I’ll soon see for myself whether you’re telling the truth or not.”
The Threelives Buddha smiled. “I hope you live long enough to see it.”
A moment later, he couldn’t help but ask, “Fellow Daoist, are you really just planning to fight us, just like that?”
He’d always excelled at planning, and he was a master of strategy. He’d come here expecting that Su Yi had laid some sort of enormous death trap, but much to his surprise, it seemed that wasn’t the case at all.
Su Yi had effectively just issued the most ordinary of challenges. It was a duel with no sign of planning or strategy whatsoever!
But that only made the Threelives Buddha increasingly on guard. He couldn’t figure out what Su Yi was thinking.
Su Yi couldn’t be bothered to explain, nor did he respond in any way. He just said directly, “Do you have any other helpers? If so, you might as well call them out into the open.”
Heavenly Sovereign E said coldly, “We’re more than enough to kill the likes of you. What need do we have for helpers?”
Su Yi took a step forward, blue robes swaying around him as he flew from the cliff and into the dome of heaven.
He put his hands behind his back and swept his gaze across the Heavenly Sovereigns. “No need to waste our breath, then. Come over and accept your deaths!”
His voice was like the clear hum of a sword spreading throughout heaven and earth. The crowd practically boiled over.
Countless people were astonished. They’ve yet to even stare each other down or probe each other’s strength. Is he really going to attack already?
Moreover, it really did seem like Su Yi planned to fight all the Heavenly Sovereigns alone!
