First Immortal of the Sword
Chapter 3111 - I’ve Tolerated You for Far Too Long
Su Yi stood beneath the dome of heaven, holding the Umbrella of Tribulations as he peered down at the Threelives Buddha and Hong Ling, then repeated his earlier invitation. “Dare you fight me here?”
As his voice echoed throughout heaven and earth, Hong Ling’s face filled with murderous intent. You’re so badly injured, yet you still dare provoke us repeatedly like this? Do you really think we’re too afraid to fight you?
But the Threelives Buddha laughed airily. “If you’re really so confident, why not fight us down here?”
Su Yi didn’t respond. He just held the Umbrella of Tribulations, turned, and walked in the direction of the Daoless Domain.
He didn’t leave the firmament, instead walking through the tumultuous Laws of Calamity, but it was as if he were walking on flat ground.
Hong Ling’s brow furrowed at the sight.
The Threelives Buddha said calmly, “Come on, let’s wait outside the Daoless Domain.”
Hong Ling’s murderous intent was on the verge of boiling over, but she forcefully suppressed it, then nodded.
A wondrous scene unfolded overhead. Su Yi walked beneath the distant dome of heaven, while the Threelives Buddha and Hong Ling followed from the ground. All three of them were headed toward the Daoless Domain at the heart of the Realm of Endless Tribulations.
It was a standoff separated by heaven and earth.
Su Yi walked at a leisurely pace, holding his umbrella.
The Threelives Buddha was similarly relaxed. As he walked, he said, “You’re badly injured. If you’ve placed your hopes on the Daoless Domain, well... If your hopes come to naught, you’ll be really, truly doomed.”
Su Yi said casually, “If your true body were here, I might well tell you the secret to exploring the Daoless Domain.”
Hong Ling blinked, stunned, her expression shifting. She transmitted, “Fellow Daoist, have you been lying to me this entire time?”
On their way to the Abyss of Endless Tribulations, the Threelives Buddha had personally assured her that this time, he’d brought his true body. This was for the sake of using the strongest powers at his disposal to end his enmity with Su Yi once and for all.
But now, Su Yi was telling them that this wasn’t the real Threelives Buddha. Hong Ling felt lied to.
The Threelives Buddha shook his head slightly and transmitted back, “I didn’t lie to you. My Grand Dao fuses the bodies of three lifetimes into one. They’re the foundation of my path, and they seek out the past, present, and future respectively. All three bodies are real, and not clones as you understand them.”
Hong Ling was instantly displeased. “So you’re saying that this is just one of your bodies?”
The Threelives Buddha said calmly, “That’s a secret. You needn’t take offense. Should the worst come to pass... I won’t get off any lighter than you.”
“Of course, that’s just the worst-case scenario. According to my deductions, the worst that’ll really happen is that we leave empty-handed. Neither Su Yi nor the Monarch of Endless Tribulations can trap us in the Realm of Endless Tribulations!”
His calm voice revealed his absolute self-confidence.
Hong Ling’s expression mellowed. “I’m not afraid to die, but I don’t want you to lie to me or manipulate me ever again!”
The Threelives Buddha inclined his head. “That really was inconsiderate of me. If you have any further misgivings on the road ahead, I’ll be sure to answer you thoroughly. I won’t hide anything else from you.”
As the two of them transmitted to each other, Su Yi suddenly called out. “The entrance to the Abyss of Endless Tribulations floats along the River of Destiny unpredictably, but where do you think the Realm of Endless Tribulations is?”
It was a perfectly ordinary question, as if he were just making idle conversation, but the Threelives Buddha’s eyes narrowed. “Forgive my foolishness, but I don’t know. Have you perhaps figured it out?”
Su Yi laughed dryly. “You aren’t ‘foolish.’ You just suspect that I’ve seen through you.”
The Threelives Buddha frowned. “What do you mean?”
Su Yi said nothing more, but Hong Ling was furious.
Both Su Yi and the Threelives Buddha had been speaking in riddles right from the start. Sometimes, she suspected that they were just deliberately feigning mystery to intimidate each other.
But now, Hong Ling knew that all of their inscrutable riddles were truly full of hidden mysteries and deeper meaning.
And that just made her feel like a complete idiot, unable to follow what was happening around her. That was naturally unpleasant.
“Fellow Daoist Su, don’t you think you’re jumping to conclusions?” the Threelives Buddha said suddenly. “This is the Abyss of Endless Tribulations, the territory of the Monarch of Endless Tribulations. Without the Key to Endless Tribulations, not even the mighty experts of the Far Shore can enter this place.”
Su Yi said casually, “Ah, but what if they’re hiding on your person?”
Hong Ling’s heart shook, and her eyes widened in disbelief.
The Threelives Buddha sighed. “If I really had cards like that, I’d have played them on the mountaintop. The Monarch of Endless Tribulations would have died beyond a shadow of a doubt by now.”
Su Yi chuckled. “You know what you’re hiding better than anyone else.”
Even as they conversed, he continued walking toward the Daoless Domain.
Hong Ling was starting to piece things together. As inscrutable and mysterious as Su Yi and the Threelives Buddha’s conversation seemed, ultimately, they were just talking about their hidden cards.
And Su Yi suspected that the Threelives Buddha was hiding powers from the Far Shore of Destiny on his person!
The battle in the Sea of Fate had served as a warning. The experts of the Far Shore no longer dared to intervene in what happened on the River of Destiny.
But if they weren’t on the River of Destiny, there was no need to uphold its rules.
That was why Su Yi asked about the true location of the Realm of Endless Tribulations. He was probing the Threelives Buddha.
The Threelives Buddha understood what Su Yi was after, but he denied it.
However, it was obvious that Su Yi didn’t believe him. He was convinced that the Threelives Buddha was hiding experts of the Far Shore.
“I’ve got to say, you’re quite the schemer, you bald donkey.” Su Yi sighed. “The Monarch of Endless Tribulations and the Buddha of Non-Existence both broke the shackles of destiny and stepped onto its Far Shore, but they fought for countless years without a backlash from the Laws of Destiny. That proves that the Realm of Endless Tribulations is strange, a world apart, not subject to the restrictions of the River of Destiny.
“That means that if you’re hiding power from the Far Shore of Destiny, you naturally have no need to fear a backlash from the River of Destiny. As for the Mountain of the Secluded Ones... It’ll be difficult for them to discover anything that happens here. Your plans are exquisite indeed. Like it or not, I cannot help but be impressed.”
This further confirmed Hong Ling’s hypothesis. She felt enlightened, but at the same time, her heart shook. Has the Threelives Buddha really prepared killer weapons from the Far Shore of Destiny?
But if that’s true, why didn’t he reveal this hidden power and annihilate the Monarch of Endless Tribulations earlier? Don’t tell me...
Everything suddenly clicked for Hong Ling. It’s because of Su Yi! The Threelives Buddha was cautious of Su Yi, so he decided not to kill the Monarch of Endless Tribulations then!
Hong Ling then recalled the Buddha of Non-Existence’s Dao Heart and vital source energy. The Monarch of Endless Tribulations had seized them, but the Threelives Buddha wasn’t the least bit upset about it. On the contrary, he seemed perfectly calm.
He obviously had reason to be confident. He wasn’t at all afraid that the Monarch of Endless Tribulations would seize all the spoils for himself!
The thought of all these secrets hidden in plain sight made Hong Ling sigh despite herself. Going forward, if at all possible, she never wanted to meet anyone like Su Yi and the Threelives Buddha ever again.
They were just too unfathomable!
And if her brain couldn’t keep up, their games were sure to get her killed!
The Threelives Buddha just smiled. “Three Purities Temple suffered badly on account of the Mountain of the Secluded Ones’ rules. One of their Dao Ancestors died over that incident. Do you really think I’m bold enough to test the Secluded Ones’ rules again?”
Su Yi disregarded him. Others might not dare, but that didn’t mean the Threelives Buddha didn’t.
Because this was the Realm of Endless Tribulations, a place separate from the River of Destiny!
“Fellow Daoist Su, why ask me such things suddenly? Unless...” began the Threelives Buddha.
But before he could finish the question, Su Yi said, “No need to probe. I’m different from you. I disdain doing such things.”
The Threelives Buddha didn’t even pause to think. “I believe it!”
And indeed, he’d visibly relaxed.
Su Yi jeered. “Are you happy now that you got the answer you’re looking for?”
The Threelives Buddha smiled. “Conversing with you is a pleasant experience indeed, Fellow Daoist.”
Su Yi suddenly stopped in place.
Practically simultaneously, the Threelives Buddha’s eyes flashed like lightning. He gazed into the distance, where a strange scene had appeared.
It was as if an invisible natural barrier stood there, splitting the Realm of Endless Tribulations in two.
On their side of the barrier, the Laws of Calamity churned beneath the dome of heaven, violent and explosive beyond measure. The air was permeated with calamitous power.
On the other side lay the heart of the Realm of Endless Tribulations. There, all was silent.
There, the dome of heaven was empty, without any hint of the Laws of Calamity, nor anything else of any kind. It seemed like true, boundless emptiness.
The only thing in sight was the curtain of darkness enveloping the region completely. No light passed through whatsoever.
From a distance, it was like gazing into a swath of vast, empty darkness. It was so dark that there was no telling where the ground ended and the sky began.
There was no need to even question it. That was the Daoless Domain! The most mysterious, unknown, dangerous place in the entire Realm of Endless Tribulations. There, even the Grand Dao was extinguished. All powers and abilities were rendered unusable.
Anyone who drew near would have their cultivation base severed, rendering them truly mortal!
“Fellow Daoist Su, is the Book of Destiny perhaps from the Daoless Domain?” asked the Threelives Buddha.
He and Hong Ling had silently come to a stop. Neither advanced any further. They just gazed at that forbidden zone full of untold perils from a safe distance.
“I’m not sure,” said Su Yi, shaking his head. He, too, had come to a stop. He sensed a strange, oppressive power.
“You aren’t sure?” The Threelives Buddha laughed. “Very well. Let’s set that aside for now. How about we end things here?”
Su Yi glanced down at the ground, where the Threelives Buddha stood. “I’ve tolerated you for far too long.”
“There’s no need to endure any longer. I’m here to fight you!” The Threelives Buddha laughed, then took a step forward. It was just one step, but it carried him into the sky, where his hands formed a seal. Then, he swung at Su Yi from afar.
His white robes billowed around him, and the black alms bowl floated above his head. His whole body erupted with boundless radiance.
In just one attack, he blasted through the Laws of Calamity overhead!
Practically simultaneously, Hong Ling appeared behind Su Yi. The Mirror of Mysteries appeared in her hand, flowing with sharp light. It fired a swath of all-encompassing starlight, like blazing celestial flame!
It was so searingly intense that it seemed it would soon burn away the entire firmament!
This attack was far mightier than the one that had injured Su Yi earlier, and far more terrifying, too.
But this time, Su Yi didn’t dodge. He had no intention of dodging.
That wasn’t all. He even put away the Umbrella of Tribulations, leaving him empty-handed. He had neither the Book of Destiny nor any kind of weapon.
Just like that, he faced his foes’ lethal strike head-on.
