Chapter 488: 488-He Played A Better Game And Now I Am Stuck

Verity:

"Oh, and speaking of fate, there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you."

He shook his head slowly, looking increasingly bothered by whatever was on his mind.

"What’s going on between you and Ragnar? I came by your place a day ago and was hanging around outside. And guess what I saw?"

He let out a small laugh, but I could tell he was growing angrier with every passing second.

"Ragnar was inside your house. He wasn’t leaving, and you didn’t even bother to tell me about it."

There it was.

That laughter of his was never a good sign. It meant he was far from pleased.

He spread his arms wider along the backrest of the couch, shaking his head at me in disappointment.

"I didn’t like that one bit. Why have you started hiding things from me? And since when has that bastard been living with you?"

He slowly rose to his feet, almost as though he sensed something was different about me.

Perhaps it was the way I seemed unusually comfortable around him.

I was wearing a jacket over my dress, one hand tucked inside its pocket, my fingers wrapped tightly around a small silver dagger.

"Look, Verity, you don’t know those men the way I do. They know exactly how to use their charm to make fools of people," Oswin complained, running his fingers through the hair at the back of his head before shaking it and resting his hands down.

He clearly wanted me to admire his body, but I wasn’t even looking at him that way.

I had absolutely no desire to.

"You don’t need to worry about that," I replied, managing a weak smile.

"Really? If I don’t look out for you, who will?"

There was something so disgusting about the undertone of his voice that it made my skin crawl.

He rested his hands on his knees and bent forward slightly, making sure I could see him slowly licking his bottom lip.

"It’s okay. Whatever happens between us today will only make our relationship stronger, so there’s no need for you to be upset about it."

With that, he started moving closer, only to stop when he noticed the look on my face.

"You were right. It’s time we made things official between us. We should have taken this step a long time ago."

The moment those words left my mouth, he turned to face me from the opposite side of the couch.

That was when I pulled the dagger from my pocket and lunged at him, aiming straight for his throat.

But he ducked just in time, and the blade sliced across his chest instead.

"Ah!" A painful groan escaped his lips as he stumbled backward.

I immediately scrambled over the couch, trying to attack him again, but before I could reach him, he pulled something from his pocket and fired it at me.

It happened so quickly that I barely had time to register what he’d done.

By the time I realized what was happening, a needle was already embedded in my stomach.

I lifted my head and found him smirking at me.

"What did you think? That I wouldn’t find out you went to our locker today to grab the silver dagger?"

With that, he threw his head back and burst into loud laughter.

My knees buckled beneath me.

Art was no longer responding inside me.

She’d fallen asleep almost instantly, leaving me completely on my own as I collapsed to my knees in front of him.

"Well, that’s where you made your mistake. I was not planning to do this by force anyway, but now..." He broke into another fit of laughter as he approached me.

Then he reached down, tangled his fingers in my hair, and seized a fistful of it at the back of my head.

And that was when it hit me.

I’d fucked up.

We knew each other far too well by now.

My body had gone completely limp.

I couldn’t fight back even if I wanted to, and all I could do was watch helplessly as he began unbuckling his pants.

"You know, you seriously don’t understand," he began, his words sounding strangely heavy and distant to my ears. "I take such good care of you. I love you so much, and yet you can’t see any of it."

He let out a chuckle.

I could tell he thought far too highly of himself, and why wouldn’t he? He had me on my knees, completely at his mercy.

With tremendous effort, I slowly lifted my hands and tried to claw at his fingers, desperate to free my hair from his grip.

"You know, some things are really important," he continued.

As he spoke, he finally released my hair, giving me a shove that sent me sprawling onto my back.

There was barely enough strength left in my body to even attempt getting up.

I had no idea how much of that fucking drug he’d injected into me, but whatever the dose of wolfsbane, it had rendered my muscles almost useless.

My other senses, however, were still functioning.

I could hear him speaking, although his voice sounded unnaturally deep and slow, and everything around me had become a blur.

That was the worst part. I hadn’t completely passed out.

Somehow, I wished I had, because being unconscious would have spared me from witnessing just how fucked up he was in the head.

He then walked toward a corner of the room and reached for something on a shelf.

Through my blurred vision, I watched him switch on a camera.

"You know, I want us to create a beautiful, unforgettable moment together," he remarked, grabbing the camera with him.

With that, he returned to where I lay, grabbed both my feet, and began dragging my helpless body across the floor toward the bedroom.

He picked me up and tossed me onto the bed, where my body landed like a lifeless doll, completely limp and devoid of strength.

He burst into such loud laughter that I wanted to scrunch my face in anger, but even that was beyond me.

No matter how hard I tried, my facial muscles refused to cooperate.

He put the camera facing the bed and then climbed onto the bed on his knees and leaned over me, bringing his face closer and closer to mine.

"The woman you’re getting so comfortable with, I wouldn’t even allow my own brothers to sit that close to her anymore."

A loud, commanding voice rang out from behind Oswin, making him immediately pull away from me.

He turned sharply toward the source, and as he moved out of my line of sight, I finally had a clear view of the doorway.

Leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed over his chest, the muscles in his arms standing out prominently, was none other than Ragnar.
