Chapter 124: Chapter 109: Spider

Huai Yu was squatting in the bamboo forest, watching the spider in front of her.

Thanks to Ke Taichiro, when she woke up this morning, not only was she refreshed and energized, but her body felt lighter than ever before. She had started tidying the house early in the morning—cleaning, washing clothes, and changing the bedding. She also had to go back under the barnyard grass tree to fetch and purify water. She bustled about like a busy worker bee, only finding a moment to rest when it was nearly noon.

Just as she was about to make lunch, she heard Kuang Biao raising a ruckus, shouting that a mutated spider had entered the bamboo forest. Honestly, Huai Yu had even grabbed her multi-purpose shovel, but when she came over to take a look, the spider was only the size of a quail egg. Furthermore, it didn’t seem very mutated at all.

It was a newly arrived large spider—frail, harmless, and with dull colors. Up close, she could only see a layer of fuzz on its body and legs. Its eight legs went PITTER-PATTER as it scrabbled against the web, which was actually quite unique.

Kuang Biao prattled on beside her, "It’s a good thing I’m so warm, hospitable, and accepting of everyone. Otherwise, look at this puny little spider with its pitifully weak venom. Who knows which blade of grass it’d have to cower under just to cling to life."

But Huai Yu completely ignored its words. "It’s so narcissistic," she thought. "Would the spider really not survive without this bamboo forest?"

This bamboo forest had just been relocated here, and previously, they couldn’t even find a single bug in it. Having a spider here at least proved that a biological cycle was slowly establishing itself. Otherwise, why would she be squatting here in the middle of the day watching it?

Not only did she squat there watching for a while, but she also listened to Kuang Biao vividly describe how the spider had drifted down from the bamboo leaves, weaving silk as it wobbled along. After several tosses and turns, it finally wove its first web.

At first glance, the size of the web was quite shocking. Even just counting from the dense mesh at the center, the spider web’s diameter already exceeded one square meter. But Kuang Biao said this was normal. After the cataclysm, many creatures’ abilities had been amplified, so it was nothing to be surprised about. The inexperienced Huai Yu had no choice but to silently swallow her astonishment.

She looked around. The sufficiently cool and damp bamboo forest provided a place for many small creatures to survive and multiply. Even though it had already been pecked sparse by Big Pup and Second Pup, it didn’t stop the forest’s inhabitants from gradually increasing in number.

For example, right now, a moth that had flown in from who knows where crashed head-first into the meter-wide spider web in front of her. It was instantly stuck, completely unable to struggle, leaving it to do nothing but helplessly twitch its body.

The plain-looking, completely unappealing little spider quickly crawled over from one end of the web. Right under Huai Yu’s watchful gaze, it bit into the moth’s soft abdomen. Weak venom was injected, followed by digestive enzymes. Before long, the moth completely stopped moving. Its body, however, looked strangely more bloated, clearly indicating that its insides had already been melted into a puddle of juice by the digestive enzymes and neurotoxin.

The little spider quietly waited for a good while longer before taking another bite, greedily sucking down this delicious lunch.

"So cruel..." she murmured. "But I suppose that’s how you should treat your enemies, right? Clean and decisive..."

She remembered the heavy-duty criminal whose skull was crushed by water pressure right in front of her on that rainy night. Surprisingly, she found herself quite accustomed to this jungle ecology now.

However...

Huai Yu squatted down and patted Ke Taichiro’s carapace. "You’re so big, it shouldn’t be able to catch you, right? And you too, Little Tian—I never see a trace of you all day. Our home has a lot of new members now, so you need to be careful."

Little Tian let out two SQUEAK SQUEAKs, clearly indifferent to the landlord’s concern.

Ke Taichiro, on the other hand, flapped its wings once. Just as Huai Yu was wondering if this spider would grow to be very large, it suddenly hit the ground with all six legs and quickly scuttled away.

"Ke Taichiro?" Huai Yu stared curiously at its retreating back. "Are you afraid of this spider?"

She turned her head to look at the spider again and asked Kuang Biao once more, "If it causes trouble, you can handle it, right?"

Kuang Biao smugly shook its leaves. "Are you kidding? The bamboo forest is me! Do you think I’d let a mere spider walk all over me? I can solve it with a single bamboo leaf!"

As soon as it finished speaking, its leaves shook, and a verdant bamboo leaf shot out like a throwing knife, pinning itself into the dirt right in front of the spider.

However, its smugness lasted no more than three seconds. Big Pup and Second Pup spread their sea urchin-like wings and let out a loud CAW. The entire bamboo tree swayed, and Kuang Biao instantly fell completely silent.

Huai Yu was speechless.

Honestly, if she had only started raising Big Pup and Second Pup a couple of days earlier, she wouldn’t have been scared half to death by Kuang Biao on the mountain. Thinking about it now, it was so embarrassing.

Just as she was feeling annoyed with herself, she suddenly saw Ke Taichiro stand up straight and walk back over, holding a colorful ball in its two front claws.
