Chapter 108: Chapter 99: Tare Tree

But if it wasn’t him, there were so many smart people in the world. Surely someone would have noticed something? Why had no one questioned it until now?

She spread her palms, recalling the frantic growth of the barnyard grass earlier today, and felt deeply puzzled.

Then, a flash of inspiration hit her, and she thought of a terrifying possibility. She wondered, "If the Rose Corridor was truly accelerated into growth by Wu Yue, and yet it happens to be so polite to me... could I have had some connection with that awful man before I lost my memory?"

"No, no, no, no!" Huai Yu shook her head frantically, thinking, "What rotten luck! Truly terrible luck!"

Although she hadn’t met Wu Yue yet, he was already obnoxious enough in her mind. She didn’t want the slightest bit of contact with him.

She wondered if God had made her lose her memory because her past memories were simply too terrible.

But if the Rose Corridor wasn’t treating her well because of that, could it be... she was the one who accelerated its growth?

But that was impossible!

After all, she was practically useless now, struggling just to survive on her own. Furthermore, even if she had been the one to grow it, her past abilities would have had to be incredibly strong. Surely she wouldn’t have been a complete unknown?

Yet now, she hadn’t heard a single story about a powerful figure named Huai Yu.

Huai Yu furrowed her brow, thoroughly baffled.

The night gradually deepened, and the floral scent in the air grew richer. The evening breeze blew gently through the cracks in the door, stirring the fragrance throughout the room.

As Huai Yu pondered, drowsiness washed over her. Having no choice but to toss these impractical questions to the back of her mind, she collapsed headfirst onto the bed.

In her dream, the currents of an underground Dark River trickled in thin, continuous streams, while the night breeze stirred various powers in the air. She opened her arms, every pore on her body expanding and contracting forcefully...

She was struggling to grow.

Then, her limbs were swiftly pulled in, and she was hidden away in a tiny box...

Huai Yu opened her eyes in the pitch-black night. The memory of the tree cocoon she had crawled out of flashed through her mind.

She thought, "Next time! Next time I go up the mountain, I must remember to check on that tree cocoon. It would be best if I can drag it back..."

But when she woke up early the next morning, she could no longer recall her dream from the previous night. Her head was buzzing, she was sneezing non-stop, and her energy was completely drained.

Well, great.

Huai Yu threw all of last night’s speculations right out the window. After all, what kind of powerful expert would catch a cold just from being drenched with a basin of water?

She didn’t even have any cold medicine. She thought, "Sigh! I need to remember to stock up on some common medicines next time. This place is just too remote."

As a result, she had no choice but to drink plenty of hot water. Even using her abilities felt exceptionally strenuous.

Yet, she still had to get out of bed. The flock of little chicks, which were much weaker compared to the Big and Second Pups, needed to be fed. On top of that, it hadn’t rained for several days in a row, and the vegetable patch was getting a bit dry...

She thought, "Ah, my life is so bitter!"

Huai Yu carried a bucket and watered the fields, sighing groggily to herself as she thought, "If I really was the one who grew the Rose Corridor, then my ending in this secluded anonymity is far too tragic! I should have at least brought a few strong male servants with me, right?"

She then glared at the culprit responsible for her cold: the barnyard tree, which was still swaying back and forth, going DRIP DROP DRIP DROP!

Fuming, she lugged out another bucket and slammed it down viciously beneath its leaves.

By the time she forced herself to stay alert long enough to finish her chores, the sun was already hanging high in the sky.

Huai Yu felt like her entire body was radiating heat. She forced herself back into the house, bit open a pouch of nutrient fluid, and touched her forehead, unsure if she just had a cold or if she was running a fever.

But... she was completely alone out here. Surely she wouldn’t just quietly fall ill and collapse in bed without anyone ever knowing?!

Gritting her teeth, she dragged herself back up to mix a cup of salt and sugar water. Only after drinking it did she finally allow herself to lie back down with peace of mind.

The moment her head hit the pillow, dreams flooded in. It felt as if she had been placed in the middle of a massive jungle.

In the jungle stood countless bizarre, towering trees, alongside slender yet supple branches that coiled fiercely around decaying trunks, bursting into brilliant, gentle blooms.

She wandered through the dense woods and vast wilderness until she arrived beneath a tree surrounded by sandy soil.

Spring was in full swing around the sandy patch, with wildflowers blooming vibrantly. But where she stood, the soil beneath her feet lacked all signs of life. Only by being completely enveloped in ice and snow did a bit of moisture seem to seep out.

The swirling snowflakes drifted down, seeping into her feverish body and bringing a comforting relief.

Looking up, she saw withered, coiling branches overhead. The massive trunk blocked out the sky and the sun, bearing faint, dark red streaks.

Her head felt freezing cold, while her feet felt comfortably warm. There was a faint reverberation beneath her feet, as though she were standing on a constantly beating heart.

A voice echoed from all directions, so gentle it was almost a whisper:

"Thank you for your Rose..."
