Enlightenment: Attaining the Dao at Age 8
Chapter 690 - 337: You Have the Nerve to Complain?
Shen Qiuyue said coldly, her eyes constantly scanning their surroundings with vigilance.
"Sister Qiuyue, that’s not very comforting!"
Sun Yang grumbled, then went back to checking his gun.
"Bai Lin, what’s the signal strength up ahead?" Li Chang’an asked over the comms.
"There’s no strong signal interference in the area ahead for now, but I’m detecting high energy fluctuations. It’s probably an ambush with Energy Weapons!" Bai Lin’s voice, tinged with a hint of tension, came through the earpiece.
"All units, be advised, possible ambush. Maintain formation!" Li Chang’an gave the order calmly.
Han Ruoxi leaned out of the vehicle and raised her wrist, adjusting the settings on her Superpower Bracelet.
"Captain, I can release an Electromagnetic Pulse to probe for the source of the interference. Should I give it a try?"
"Go ahead, but control the range. Don’t let it affect our own convoy’s communications!"
Li Chang’an nodded.
Han Ruoxi climbed onto the roof of the supply truck. She raised her hands slightly, and her Superpower Bracelet flickered with blue-white electrical light.
A powerful electromagnetic wave radiated out from her, instantly blanketing an area several hundred meters around them.
A few seconds later, a "BUZZZ" sounded from up ahead. Immediately after, two automated weapon turrets hidden in the bushes lost power and showered sparks.
"Enemy ambush point located. Two automated turrets have been disabled!"
Han Ruoxi lowered her hands, a hint of pride in her voice.
"Nice work!"
Li Chang’an nodded.
"Continue forward. Stay alert!"
The convoy drove for about another half hour before finally reaching a small supply station, the last stop before the Northern Base.
"Everyone, disembark! Check your equipment and log it!"
Li Chang’an directed the team while personally starting to take inventory of the supplies.
Sun Yang jumped out of the vehicle and plopped down on the ground, panting heavily.
"Man, we finally made it through that leg of the trip.
Captain, do you think we can get a decent meal once we reach the Northern Base? I’m starving!"
"Didn’t you just eat three Energy Cookies in the vehicle?"
Han Ruoxi stared at him, speechless.
"How are you hungry again so soon?"
"You call that a meal? That barely filled a hole in my tooth!"
Sun Yang threw his hands up, a look of grievance on his face.
"We’ll talk about food later. Finish the mission first!"
Li Chang’an clapped him on the shoulder, then turned his gaze to the supply truck’s driver.
"What’s the status?"
"The vehicle’s in good condition, and the supplies are undamaged. We can keep moving!" the driver reported succinctly.
"Good. We move out in fifteen minutes!"
Li Chang’an nodded.
Just as the Insect Hunter Squad was taking a short break, Bai Lin suddenly walked over to Li Chang’an and handed him a datapad.
"Captain, I just intercepted an encrypted transmission. It was sent from nearby!" Bai Lin said in a low voice.
"The Rebel Army’s?"
Li Chang’an frowned slightly as he took the datapad.
"Could be. Or it could be an internal leak!" Bai Lin replied quietly.
"I’m still decrypting the content, but I can confirm they know about the supplies we’re escorting!"
Li Chang’an fell silent in thought for a moment, then spoke into his comms.
"All units, heighten alert. We might have a mole!"
"A mole?"
Sun Yang froze, turning to look at Han Ruoxi.
"What does that mean? Someone in our convoy sold us out?"
"It’s not certain, but it never hurts to be careful!"
Han Ruoxi’s expression also grew serious, and her Superpower Bracelet began to glow faintly.
Shen Qiuyue spoke coldly.
"No matter who it is, if they dare show their face, we’ll make them pay the price!"
The convoy set off again, but this time, every member of the Insect Hunter Squad was on even higher alert.
Li Chang’an sat in the front passenger seat of the lead vehicle, his hand gripping his Saw Chain Sword, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.
"Bai Lin, keep monitoring communication signals. Notify me immediately if there’s any anomaly!" Li Chang’an said in a low voice through his earpiece.
"Understood!"
Bai Lin’s voice came over the comms.
The team had been driving for less than ten minutes when, suddenly, a group of enemies charged out from the dense woods on both sides of the convoy! They were fully armed, wielding High-Energy Weapons, and had clearly come prepared.
"Rebel Army ambush! All hands, engage!"
Li Chang’an shouted as he quickly disembarked, positioning himself in front of the supply truck.
Sun Yang immediately raised his Pulse Gun and began spraying fire wildly from behind the vehicle.
"These guys just don’t give up! Captain, what kind of score are we keeping them from that makes them this desperate?"
"Less talk, more fighting! Drive them back!" Li Chang’an commanded, cleaving through an enemy who charged at him with one swing of his sword.
Han Ruoxi leaped down from the truck’s roof, releasing two arcs of electricity from her hands that instantly felled several members of the Rebel Army.
She looked up at Li Chang’an and shouted.
"Captain, the enemy has a heavy Mecha! This won’t be easy!"
Shen Qiuyue swung her Dueling Sword, slicing an approaching drone in half, and said coldly,
"Take out the smaller enemy groups on the perimeter. The Mecha is mine!"
"Sister Qiuyue, you’re a total Valkyrie!" Sun Yang yelled as he continued to fire.
"But a Mecha should still be left to the guy with the big guns, right?!"
"Stop bragging and protect yourself first!"
Shen Qiuyue retorted coldly, but she was already charging toward the Mecha.
Li Chang’an stood before the supply truck, the other members of the Insect Hunter Squad at his back.
Though the enemy’s assault was fierce, they were gradually forced to retreat under the squad’s tenacious defense.
"Captain, the signal jamming is clear! The enemy’s command system is exposed!"
Bai Lin’s voice came through.
"Excellent! Concentrate fire and end this fight!"
Li Chang’an shouted.
After a fierce battle, the Insect Hunter Squad successfully repelled the enemy, and calm returned to the convoy once more.
"That was a close one!"
Han Ruoxi leaned against a vehicle, gasping for breath.
"Captain, can we get an easier mission next time?"
"Easy missions are for other squads. We’re Insect Hunters; we have to take the most dangerous jobs!"
Li Chang’an said flatly, his eyes still vigilantly scanning the surroundings.
"Captain, if that’s the case, we should get a raise!" Sun Yang said half-jokingly as he wiped the sweat from his face.
"We’ll talk after the mission is complete!"
Li Chang’an clapped him on the shoulder.
"Move out! The Northern Base is just ahead!"
"Captain, I was looking at the enemy’s equipment. It seemed a lot more advanced than before!"
Han Ruoxi said, standing beside Li Chang’an with a hint of worry in her voice.
"Especially those Mechas. They didn’t look like something the regular Rebel Army could get their hands on!"
"True. There might be a greater power backing them!"
Li Chang’an said in a low voice as he walked.
"But we can’t worry about that for now. The primary objective is to get the supplies safely to the Northern Base!"
"Captain, do you think another faction might be secretly supporting them?"
Shen Qiuyue came up from behind and joined the discussion.
"It’s possible!"
Li Chang’an nodded.
"But let’s not jump to conclusions without hard evidence!"
"Brother Chang’an, what if we tried a different approach?"
Sun Yang suddenly interjected.
"Like, what if we go on the offensive and wipe out the Rebel Army’s main nest? Then they couldn’t cause any more trouble, right?"
"Sounds simple, but where do you think their main nest is? Some random mining area? An abandoned factory?"
Han Ruoxi shot him a glance.
"The Rebel Army has bases all over Lion’s Fang Star. If they were that easy to find, they would’ve been wiped out long ago!"
"So we’re just supposed to sit back and take their punches?"
Sun Yang spread his hands, looking frustrated.
"That’s why we need to complete the mission at hand!"
Li Chang’an said coldly.
"This is a battle, not a game. There’s no magic bullet that solves everything at once!"
Sun Yang scratched his head and mumbled,
"Fine, you’re the boss. The captain’s always right!"
Up ahead of the convoy, Bai Lin’s voice came over the comms.
"Captain, we’re ten kilometers from the Northern Base, but the Energy fluctuations ahead are abnormally strong. It could be the Rebel Army’s final ambush!"
"Everyone, prepare for battle!"
Li Chang’an immediately gave the order, and the entire squad went on high alert.
"If they’re coming at us again, I bet it won’t just be regular Mechas and small squads this time!"
Han Ruoxi said with a frown as she adjusted her Superpower Bracelet.
"Sister Ruoxi, just hearing you say that makes me nervous!"
