Enlightenment: Attaining the Dao at Age 8
Chapter 689 - 337: You Have the Nerve to Complain?
Just then, Sun Yang burst into the dining hall, carrying a tray of food, and sat down beside them.
"Phew, I almost missed breakfast! You guys, why is the food at this base always so boring?"
Sun Yang complained through a mouthful of food.
"You eat more than anyone else every day, and you still have the nerve to complain?"
Shen Qiuyue shot him a cold glance.
"Sister Qiuyue, it’s called fueling up! We could get another high-intensity mission today for all we know. I’m just being prepared!"
Sun Yang immediately retorted.
"Alright, eat up. We have a mission briefing soon!" Li Chang’an said as he gathered his documents and rose to his feet.
"Captain, another mission? Can’t you let us catch our breath!"
Sun Yang looked up at Li Chang’an with a resigned expression, bread crumbs still clinging to the corner of his mouth.
"Missions *are* your way of catching your breath!"
Li Chang’an replied coldly and walked straight out of the dining hall.
In the command center, Liu Na stood before the main control screen, which displayed a complex topographical map of a planet.
"Insect Hunter Squad, today’s mission is a special one!"
Liu Na got straight to the point.
"You’re to escort a shipment of vital supplies to the Northern Base on Lion’s Fang Star. These supplies include the latest weapon prototypes and research equipment. Nothing can go wrong!"
"An escort mission? Sounds simple enough!"
Sun Yang looked relaxed.
"Just a routine job, right?"
"If it were just a routine job, we wouldn’t be sending you," Liu Na said, glancing at him.
"Intel indicates the Rebel Army may have already targeted these supplies. It’s highly likely you’ll be ambushed en route!"
"The Rebel Army is really everywhere," Han Ruoxi said with a frown.
"Are they that desperate for gear?"
"The core technology in this shipment is enough to change the tide of the war. There’s no way they’ll pass this up," Liu Na said grimly.
"The specific route has been sent to your terminals. Departure is in one hour!"
"Understood. We’ll get the mission done," Li Chang’an said with a nod.
The mission convoy stood ready. Members of the Insect Hunter Squad were positioned around the armored vehicles, standing guard.
"Hey, Captain, you think this escort mission is going to be a little boring? Are we just going to trail along slowly the whole time?" Sun Yang asked idly, lying on the roof of an armored vehicle with his Pulse Gun in hand.
"You won’t find it so boring if the Rebel Army actually shows up."
Li Chang’an stood at the head of the formation, his gaze sweeping vigilantly over their surroundings.
"To be honest, I’d rather be bored. It’s better than running into the Insect Race," Han Ruoxi said from inside a vehicle, leaning against the window.
"Don’t get your hopes up for an easy ride. These are the kinds of missions that always go sideways," Shen Qiuyue said coldly, standing by a vehicle with one hand on her Dueling Sword.
The convoy slowly set off, heading north along a rugged mountain road.
The squad remained on high alert, communicating occasionally over their comms.
"Bai Lin, any anomalous signals five kilometers out?" Li Chang’an asked over his headset.
"Nothing detected for now, but there’s strong signal interference in the area. Could be a jammer."
Bai Lin’s voice came over the headset.
"Keep monitoring," Li Chang’an said in a low voice.
Half an hour later, the convoy entered a narrow valley flanked by steep cliffs.
"This is not a good place to defend," Sun Yang muttered, scanning his surroundings warily.
"If the Rebel Army set up an ambush here, we’d be in big trouble!"
"All units, stay sharp! Prepare for combat!"
Li Chang’an ordered in a low voice, his hand gripping his Saw Chain Sword. His eyes remained fixed on the cliffs, watching for any movement.
Suddenly, a massive explosion erupted up ahead. The lead armored vehicle was blown apart, sending shrapnel flying everywhere!
"Enemy contact! All units, on alert!" Li Chang’an yelled.
"Here they come! I knew it!"
Sun Yang immediately raised his Pulse Gun and opened fire into the smoke and dust ahead.
"Enemies on the left cliff face!"
Han Ruoxi leaped from her vehicle and unleashed a powerful arc of electricity, felling several Rebel soldiers.
Wielding her Dueling Sword, Shen Qiuyue cleaved a descending rebel soldier in two. "These guys came pretty well-prepared," she commented coldly.
"They’re after the cargo! Don’t let them get close!"
Li Chang’an shouted, cutting down an advancing enemy as he directed the squad.
More and more enemies appeared. The Rebel Army’s firepower was intense, and they even deployed modified Mecha Warriors.
"Captain, that thing’s going to be tough to take down!" Sun Yang yelled while laying down fire.
"I need support!"
"I’m on it!"
Han Ruoxi unleashed a blast of Electric Energy that struck the Mecha’s core. It instantly seized up and collapsed.
"Nice one, Ruo Xi!" Sun Yang yelled with a grin, turning his attention back to the remaining enemies.
The battle lasted for more than ten minutes. The Insect Hunter Squad gradually gained the upper hand and successfully protected the supply convoy.
"Mop up. Take stock of the supplies and check for losses!" Li Chang’an ordered, deactivating his Saw Chain Sword and wiping the sweat from his brow.
"Captain, this group of rebels had upgraded tactics. It looks like they’re really after our tech," Bai Lin reported after analyzing the enemy’s weaponry on his terminal.
"We have to report this intel as soon as we get back."
Li Chang’an nodded. "Good work," he said to the squad. "Let’s keep moving. Don’t get complacent."
Under the protection of the Insect Hunter Squad, the convoy pressed onward. The shadows of the valley gradually fell away behind them, revealing a wide, open plain ahead.
"Finally out of that damn place!" Sun Yang said with a long sigh of relief, his grip on his Pulse Gun relaxing slightly.
"Those rebels were fighting like crazy. The second we popped our heads out, they just rushed us. I’m almost out of ammo!"
"Don’t get careless. The Rebel Army’s style is to attack in waves."
