Edge of the Apocalypse
Chapter 175 - 166: Firepower
Chapter 175: Chapter 166: Firepower
Three guns were laid out on the large wooden table in the conference room.
One AK-103 rifle and two MP9 submachine guns.
Wang Dingbei caressed the AK-103, unable to put it down.
"This thing is a beauty. I’ve barely touched one since I left the police academy... Give me this, and I could take down B Port all by myself."
Yu Dong said, "What, with infinite ammo mode enabled again?"
"Don’t interrupt. I’m appreciating the charm of the firearm~"
Having been unable to use a gun against zombies for the past two days, Wang was bursting with pent-up frustration. Now that he had his hands on an AK-level rifle, he couldn’t wait to become the zombies’ strictest father.
"Officer Wang, we don’t have much 7.62x39mm rifle ammunition on the ship. We only have four boxes, a total of 80 rounds. Including the 21 rounds in this gun’s magazine, we have 101 rifle rounds in total. If we take it out to fight zombies, we could burn through it all in a single day, and then... it’s gone. We can’t really produce this type of ammunition here. Once we run out, this gun is useless. So, I don’t recommend using the AK-103 on zombies. It’s too much of a waste."
Lin Mo poured a bucket of cold water on Wang Dingbei’s excitement, telling him not to get his hopes up.
Wang pouted. "Well, we should still use it when we have to. We just need to save some ammo."
"On the other hand, these two MP9 submachine guns are much better. Not only do we have plenty of 9mm ammunition for them—a full six large boxes plus two almost-full magazines, for a total of 355 rounds—but they can also resupply your Type 92s. Later on, we can get more ammo from the police station."
The MP9 submachine guns and the police-issue Type 92 pistols can both use 9mm ammunition, which police stations usually keep in stock.
Yu Dong picked up one of the MP9s. It had a long, black suppressor attached. He handled it for a moment; it felt great in his hands.
"I like this one. I just don’t know if it’s easy to use."
"Easier than a crossbow."
Wang Dingbei laughed heartily.
"That’s good, then..." It was Yu Dong’s first time holding a submachine gun like this. He found a kind of industrial aesthetic in its various parts; the more he looked at it, the more he liked it.
Lin Mo explained, "Both of these MP9s are equipped with suppressors, so they’ll be quieter. We can use them when we go out to kill zombies. The 9mm rounds are lethal enough, so you can kill zombies without worrying about attracting a horde."
"All three guns we captured this time are excellent, with high firepower... It’s a shame Zou Long got away with that boat. Otherwise, there would have been at least one more AK on it." Wang Dingbei sighed faintly.
"Having three automatic weapons is already great. We don’t lack guns right now, we lack ammunition," Lin Mo reminded him.
Wang Dingbei, Jing Yanwei, and Xiao Dabe each had a Type 92 pistol. Lin Mo herself had a QSZ-193 self-defense pistol. Adding these three new automatic weapons, the team now had a total of seven guns.
If they all opened fire at once, their instantaneous firepower would be quite formidable.
Wang Dingbei said, "The AK is too loud to take out for killing zombies. We’ll leave it with Lin Mo for home defense. We can carry the two MP9s... If we run into danger, we can just spray."
"One for each of us," Yu Dong said.
"You... Your people can’t handle these yet. Automatic weapons are no joke. Take my pistol and practice with it first. Get a feel for it."
Yu Dong thought for a moment. "Then give me two pistols."
"You sly fox..."
Wang Dingbei knew that Yu Dong also wanted to control the power of firearms, so he didn’t argue. He gave both his and Xiao Dabe’s police pistols to Yu Dong.
After receiving them, Yu Dong first opened the magazines to check. They were completely empty, without a single bullet.
"Wang, are they really out of ammo?"
"Would I lie to you?"
The meeting tonight didn’t last long. After the three of them divided the guns and ammunition, they briefly touched on their plans for tomorrow. They decided to first clear out Port C and D Port completely, then head to the Huangyang Port Police Station, which was relatively close to the port.
Lin Mo now had an AK-103. As an all-around female soldier, using it was simple for her, but there was no need for it at the moment, so she locked it away.
Wang Dingbei and Xiao Dabe each slung an MP9 over their shoulders, swapping their pistols for submachine guns. They were delighted.
Yu Dong didn’t lose out either. He got two Type 92 pistols, which he could use to arm two of his own people.
He normally used a crossbow, so he could just keep the pistol on his hip. He could draw it at any time in an emergency, making it a perfect fit.
’This one... who should I give it to?’
Yu Dong thought about the combat personnel in his core team.
Huang Zhiqiang, Zhao Youcai, Yan Yikai, Zhao Wenjie, Liu Ye’ye, and Shen Xinyi—a total of six people.
After a moment’s thought, Yu Dong took the gun and returned to his interstellar suite, heading to Zhao Youcai’s room.
"Youcai, take this gun. Tomorrow, we’ll practice shooting with Officer Wang and the others."
"Dongzi, this... is for me? Where did you get a pistol?"
Zhao Youcai was a bit overwhelmed by the favor. He knew the team didn’t have many guns, and by all rights, he shouldn’t have gotten a share of the three just captured.
"I traded one submachine gun with Wang Dingbei for two pistols, so we could each have one. You know... on this team, you’re the one I trust the most. You can make good use of this gun."
Hearing this, an excited expression washed over Zhao Youcai’s face.
"Yeah! Don’t worry, Dongzi. I’ll make sure this gun is put to its best possible use."
To be honest, Zhao Youcai’s physique wasn’t particularly strong, and he had no advantage in terms of stamina. He needed this gun to keep others in line.
Yu Dong patted Zhao Youcai on the shoulder and returned to his own room.
In the end, he decided to give the gun to the most decisive and adaptable person, Zhao Youcai, because he had recently discovered... Zhao Youcai didn’t seem to experience the emotion of ’fear’.
He was the type to get crazier the greater the pressure... So when things truly reached their limit, Zhao Youcai would be able to calmly draw his gun and fire, instead of being stunned or scared stiff.
This was very important. Yu Dong felt that no one else on the team had this ability yet.
’If I had one more gun... it should go to Liu Ye’ye or Shen Xinyi.’
It would be for self-defense for the two back-row mechanics, since neither of them had much hand-to-hand combat ability.
Tonight, Shen Xinyi was frantically training to pilot drones with a VR headset, determined to improve. She also wanted to become Yu Dong’s capable partner and couldn’t let Liu Ye’ye steal all the spotlight.
Liu Ye’ye watched Shen Xinyi... then used the ship’s internal phone to call Xia Yao’s room.
"Yaoyao, do you want to learn how to be a pilot from me? A drone operator."
"But I don’t want to kill zombies... I’m a real coward."
Xia Yao said pitifully.
"It’s okay. Courage is something you can build up. To be honest, I was scared too... but when you’re pushed to this point, you just have to go for it."
After all, Liu Ye’ye had just killed someone today with a suicide drone.
"How about we just forget it... Can I do something else? I went with Sister Qiao to check the warehouses and take inventory today, and tomorrow we’re planning to make the new ’currency’."
"Then... alright. I’ll ask someone else."
After hanging up, Liu Ye’ye felt a little dejected.
Xia Yao didn’t want to learn from her, Wang Xiuying was too old and her reflexes weren’t fast enough, Qiao Ping had mobility issues, and Lin Mo had to manage a huge pile of internal affairs. There was no one left on their team who could learn to fly drones.
’Looks like I’ll have to find a few people from downstairs...’
Yu Dong had told her to train several more pilots so they could eventually use drone swarms in combat.
Late at night, a pile of zombies was still flailing about in the water below Port C~
...
On the morning of the fourth day of the apocalypse.
「Outside the Zongshan Civilian Training Base.」
Qiao Yunliang, five soldiers, and twelve armed guards stood on the roof of a tall residential building, observing the inside of the base with binoculars.
The entire civilian base was teeming with wandering zombies, but the grounds inside were open, the lines of sight were clear, and the paths were distinct. After observing for a while, Qiao Yunliang came to a conclusion.
"Our firepower is sufficient to eliminate them."
The men he brought were all fully armed fighters, and for now, their ammunition was still plentiful.
The communications officer said, "Sir, are we really going to open fire on these brothers? We haven’t received orders from our superiors... Wouldn’t it be bad to act rashly?"
Qiao Yunliang thought of the four pieces of advice Yu Dong had given him...
"We can’t wait for orders from our superiors. They’re in chaos. We have to rely on ourselves. We must seize the opportunity within the first ten days of the apocalypse."
"Every second counts! Prepare to move out!"
"Objective: Completely eliminate the zombies in the civilian base, rescue the trapped militia, and secure their equipment and ammunition."
The eighteen men raised their guns and charged in.
RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT~
Muzzle flashes erupted from the barrels as gunfire echoed throughout the civilian training base!
A large number of zombies poured out of the base. They were all militia zombies, with physical fitness far exceeding that of ordinary people, making them fast and strong.
But faced with eighteen soldiers and armed security forces who weren’t stingy with their bullets, the zombies fell row by row like wheat being scythed, never even getting a chance to touch them.
The power of firearms was on full display!
In this life, Qiao Yunliang had broken into the Zongshan Civilian Base on the fourth day of the apocalypse...
「At the same time, at the cruise ship base.」
Yu Dong and Officer Wang led the combat team to sweep through Port C.
Yesterday’s drone explosion had startled a large number of zombies at Port C, causing them to jump into the sea, which made today’s cleanup exceptionally easy.
Since it was urban warfare, Yu Dong and Zhao Youcai took the opportunity to practice using their pistols.
They discovered that the guns were much simpler to use than the crossbow. They were accurate and fast, and didn’t require reloading after every shot. They could continuously blow the heads off multiple zombies.
The two of them were having a blast and couldn’t stop shooting.
It went on until Wang Dingbei, his face dark, said, "That’s enough practice. Save your bullets! Keep them for hordes the crossbows can’t handle."
"Wang, who the hell invented these things? They feel so damn good to use~"
"It really leaves you... wanting more."
As the team’s skills improved and their firepower was upgraded, their combat effectiveness rapidly expanded, and dealing with zombies became much easier.
They took down Port C in one go, securing numerous towering grain silos and many warehouses full of unprocessed grain and oil materials.
"Dongzi, this place is swimming in riches! How many years could we live on all this grain...?"
Huang Zhiqiang saw a silo as tall as a high-rise building completely filled with wheat. Just this one silo contained more food than their group of over 100 people could possibly eat before it rotted.
At the same time, they also rescued quite a few people from various offices, hidden corners, and some of the silos in Port C.
There were truck drivers, dockworkers, machine operators, and technical workers who maintained the grain silos. Most of them were employees of a company called ’Shengkang Grain and Oil Group’. The entire Port C was basically managed by this grain and oil company.
After Yu Dong finished clearing Port C, the survivors gathered together and asked Wang Dingbei:
"Officer, I saw you take care of those bad guys yesterday."
"They kidnapped our colleagues. Where are our colleagues now?"
"Can you let them come back?"
Wang Dingbei replied, "They’re all on the ship at A Port. Come with us, and you’ll see them when we get to the cruise ship."
The survivors from Port C exchanged glances, and one of them, who seemed to be a leader, asked in a low voice:
"Officer, do we... have to go to the cruise ship? There are no more zombies now. If we just close the main gate to our factory area, it’s pretty safe here."
"Our dorms and personal belongings are all here. We don’t want to leave."
"Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home..."
