Chapter 174: Chapter 165: Yin Shuangyang’s Will to Survive

This was one question Yin Shuangyang simply couldn’t figure out.

No one should have been able to get to it in the bank. The bank’s president had taken his money; if Yin Shuangyang was exposed, the president would be investigated too. It made no sense.

Yu Dong had stolen his ace in the hole like a ghost, and Wang Dingbei had turned it into his death warrant.

Yu Dong nodded to the doctor, who then left, closing the door to the room behind him.

Once the doctor was gone, Yu Dong spoke freely.

"I was reborn. I died and came back seven days before the apocalypse. In my last life, my people and I broke into the vault, got your ledger, and memorized every last detail. In this life, I created a copy and gave it to Officer Wang."

Yin Shuangyang’s eyes shot open. He propped himself up to look at Officer Wang.

Wang Dingbei said, "That’s what he told me, too. Believe it or not, it’s up to you. I don’t believe him, but I can’t find any other explanation. Alright, now it’s your turn... Who was in the speedboat?"

"COUGH COUGH..." Yin Shuangyang coughed up a mouthful of blood, but his mind was unusually clear.

When he heard the word "reborn," everything he couldn’t understand suddenly became crystal clear!

The orphan with a record as clean as a blank slate, the ledger that appeared out of nowhere, his terrifying ability to fight one against twelve, the bustling A Port on the day of the apocalypse, the safe cruise ship, the drone bombs...

"No wonder... No wonder... COUGH COUGH!"

Yin Shuangyang spat out another mouthful of blood, this time with fragments of his internal organs. Blood from his back seeped through the gauze and soaked the bed, and the color drained from his face.

"Tell me who was in the speedboat! Now!" Wang Dingbei grabbed Yin Shuangyang’s arm, terrified he would die in the next second without saying a word.

"It’s Zou Long."

Wang Dingbei had the answer he wanted. Yin Shuangyang had delivered on his promise.

He now lay on the hospital bed, a look of relief on his face.

’So this is how I lost...’

Yu Dong nodded. There was no reason to lie to a dying man. This final exchange of information would let them know who they were up against.

But Wang Dingbei clearly wasn’t done with Yin Shuangyang.

"Where did Zou Long go? Where’s your big ship docked? What are the coordinates?"

"Heh... I won’t betray my brother. Officer Wang, stop shouting. Just let me die in peace..."

He closed his eyes, and his long, tumultuous life flashed before him...

’That was the path I walked.’

’I have no regrets in this life.’

’But there was one odd thing, something that didn’t feel quite right... But I no longer have the energy to think about it. I’m so tired...’

Wang Dingbei said, "Oh no, you don’t!"

Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through his arm. The flashback vanished, and Yin Shuangyang’s eyes snapped open.

He saw Wang Dingbei jabbing a syringe of adrenaline straight into him, completely shattering the vision of his life flashing by.

"COUGH, COUGH, COUGH! What are you doing?"

"Tell me where Zou Long’s ship is! Tell me, and I’ll let you die!"

"I’ll never..."

But just then, Yin Shuangyang’s mind started turning again. That one odd thing suddenly clicked. He looked over at Yu Dong and asked a question:

"Yu Dong! Are you a fucking idiot?"

Yu Dong: "???"

"Hey, I’m not the one torturing you. What gives?"

’Yu Dong didn’t really have any strong feelings about Yin Shuangyang... He’d never even met the man face-to-face before today!’

’Wang Dingbei had orchestrated everything. The most Yu Dong had done was fight Yin Shuangyang’s thugs once.’

’His feelings toward Yin Shuangyang... were distant. There was no hatred, no other emotion. Just the simple knowledge... that a man like him had to be eliminated.’

’You could infer his patterns of behavior from the things he’d done. People always repeat their past actions...’

’So, killing Yin Shuangyang and his lackeys was for his own safety and the safety of everyone on the cruise ship. It wasn’t a personal vendetta.’

But Yin Shuangyang, now running on fumes from the adrenaline, stared intently at Yu Dong and said in disbelief:

"You get reborn, you get my ledger... so why come after me? Did I fuck you over in your last life or something? COUGH, COUGH, COUGH!"

"Not exactly... I’ve never even met you in any of my lives."

"Then why did you team up with *him* to take me down?"

"I needed money."

"You should’ve asked me for it! I would’ve fucking paid a hundred million for that ledger, wouldn’t I have?"

Yu Dong: "?"

’For a moment, Yu Dong thought Yin Shuangyang actually had a point.’

’Yeah, why *did* I go after Yin Shuangyang in the first place?’

’I think it was just to get some money... But that day, I happened to be visiting Officer Wang, he called me over, and we just happened to start talking about it.’

’And then... then I just got swept along by Officer Wang.’

’Officer Wang was the one running the show the whole time. Whether it was the extortion or Yin Shuangyang’s arrest, Yu Dong wasn’t involved. He just collected the ten million Officer Wang had promised him.’

’Then I started buying fuel, crossbows, and all that...’

’But now that Yin Shuangyang had said it, Yu Dong thought...’

"No, that’s wrong. Because you’re a bad guy. If I had gone to you, you would’ve had me killed... Officer Wang wouldn’t do that. He was a good person in my last life; he already proved it. That’s why we’re building this cruise ship base together."

Yin Shuangyang looked even more incredulous after hearing this, an unnatural flush rising to his cheeks.

"COUGH COUGH! If you’d told me you were reborn, I would’ve worked with you! You think I’m not more influential than some broke-ass cop making 3,500 a month? I could shut down this whole port with a single word."

Seeing the look of surprise on Yu Dong’s face, Yin Shuangyang no longer had the strength to argue.

"Yu Dong, you’re going to be the death of me. I can’t believe... that a stupid-ass college kid who still thinks the world is black and white can get to be reborn. Heh... COUGH, COUGH, COUGH!"

He broke into a violent coughing fit, looking like he was on his last breath.

Wang Dingbei roared, "Speak! Where’s Zou Long’s ship? What other weapons does he have? Or I won’t let you die!"

"Whatever... I’m dying of sheer frustration today..."

Yin Shuangyang was already fading. In his last moments of clarity, all he could see was a foolish reborn man. If *he* could be reborn... Suddenly, a sliver of light pierced the darkness of his world.

Wang Dingbei hit him with another shot of adrenaline.

"Speak up! Dammit! You’ve been a villain your whole life, just be a goddamn good person for once before you die! I’ll send Zou Long down to keep you company sooner, how about that? Good buddies shouldn’t be apart for long!!!"

But this shot had little effect. Yin Shuangyang barely managed to open his weary eyes and clung to that last sliver of light in his world of darkness.

"Wait... what did you say before? That you’ve never met me in any of your lives... You’ve been reborn more than once?"

"This is my third time."

"Zou Long’s ship is docked at a small island, coordinates **°**’ N, **°**’ E. He broke his leg, so he’ll be laid up for at least three months. He’s a loyal man, he’ll definitely try to get revenge for me. There’s a heavy machine gun on the ship. You need to be careful..."

Yin Shuangyang, who had just been talking about loyalty, immediately sold out his good buddy Zou Long without a second thought.

After rattling off the information, he violently spewed a large mouthful of blood, his face now completely devoid of color.

He looked at Yu Dong, his eyes filled with a desperate craving for life, and managed to force out his final words:

"Remember... come... to... me... for... money..."

The last of his life’s potential utterly spent, Yin Shuangyang’s head lolled to the side. He was gone.

Wang Dingbei said, "Well, at least you grew a conscience in the end. Didn’t waste my three shots of adrenaline."

’That stuff is precious, especially in the apocalypse. There’s no way to get more.’

Meanwhile, Yu Dong stared at Yin Shuangyang’s body, deep in thought...

’He was pretty sure he knew what Yin Shuangyang meant.’

’But... could he really do that?’

’Right now, he didn’t feel anything special in the slightest. He just knew that getting hit would hurt, and getting killed would mean death...’

Yin Shuangyang was dead.

Of the nine people they’d rescued, one died despite their efforts, one was severely injured and remained in a coma, and seven had minor injuries.

Yu Dong and his group had carried out an imperfect plan.

But there was one piece of good news: Zou Long was injured and his mobility was limited.

That evening, the group held a meeting.

Wang Dingbei had someone bring over all the guns they had confiscated from the ship that day.

"Damn... this is more firepower than our entire detective squad has..."
