Edge of the Apocalypse
Chapter 173 - 164: An Imperfect Plan
Chapter 173: Chapter 164: An Imperfect Plan
"The world’s really changed. Good thing you guys hijacked this boat when you did, or I would’ve been bitten to death by zombies..."
"President Yin, you’ve got luck on your side. It’s just a shame about all our good brothers... They all turned into zombies. Almost bit Brother Zou to death... The world’s like this now, so what’s our next move?"
"Let’s go back to the big ship and rest for a while. We’ll decide what to do after Zou recovers. This food will last us a good long while. We can teach these people how to use guns, and then come back once we’re rested up."
"President Yin, you mean... the Royal Caribbean International Cruise?"
"Yeah! Your crappy little boats are nowhere near as comfortable as a big cruise ship. I saw some commotion over there on the cruise ship. I bet a lot of people survived on it."
Yin Shuangyang turned, leaning his hands on the railing. He gazed at the massive cruise ship docked at A Port, which looked like a castle on the sea.
"It’s nothing a few magazines can’t solve. No one’s controlling guns anymore. With these, we’re the boss wherever we go."
"Don’t be so quick to start shooting... If you kill everyone, who’s going to do the work? Who are you going to screw?"
"Heheheh~ True. These women are a bit old. Their skin is all soft and saggy, no fun at all... How about we swing by the cruise ship before we leave and snatch a couple of broads to play with?"
"See, you’re getting impatient again... Let me tell you, when we do nothing, we do nothing. But when we make a move, we make it count. We take the whole thing in one go!"
"Make what count? Huh? Why do I hear an engine..."
A drone, flying at 100 km/h, slammed into his chest.
BOOM!!!
The violent explosion instantly killed the thug and blasted Yin Shuangyang into the air, sending him plunging into the sea.
On the other speedboat, another thug was hit by a similarly fast suicide drone at almost the exact same moment.
BOOM!!!
He was blown to bits!
The nine people squatting beside him were caught in the flash and shrapnel. The blast knocked them to the ground, instantly deafening them and tearing gashes all over their bodies.
Luckily, since they were squatting, they were thrown against the railing and stopped there, instead of being blasted into the sea.
Through his binoculars, Yu Dong saw that the two people closest to the blast were seriously injured, but the other seven seemed to be mostly okay.
"It’s done! Let’s move out!"
Two FPV suicide drones, mission accomplished in one go!
Liu Ye’ye and Yang Ze took off their headsets, quickly packed their gear, and everyone headed downstairs. They swiftly evacuated from B Port and returned to A Port.
ROAR!!!
ROAR!!!
The zombies at C Port, drawn by the massive explosions, formed a horde and surged toward the two speedboats.
Just then, a fishing boat approached from B Port. Wang Dingbei was coming to rescue the nine people.
Just as they thought they had completed their tactical strike, the engine of the now-unmanned speedboat roared to life, and a white wake churned up from beneath it.
VRRROOOM!
The speedboat changed direction and sped away!
"Damn it, don’t run! After them!"
Wang Dingbei roared, but the sailor piloting the fishing boat for him looked speechless.
"That’s a military-grade speedboat, Officer Wang... Look at that speed. How are we supposed to catch it in this rust bucket?"
"Shit! There’s someone else hiding in the cockpit!"
There weren’t just three thugs; someone else had been in the cockpit the whole time.
Wang Dingbei could now only direct the sailors to pilot the fishing boat over to the other speedboat.
SPLASH~ SPLASH~ SPLASH~
Zombies from C Port poured out of the buildings and leaped straight into the sea.
The speedboat was some distance from the shore. The zombies couldn’t jump far, so they just fell stiffly into the water, where a crowd of them now thrashed about.
By the time the fishing boat arrived, some of the people on the speedboat had recovered enough to move. Seeing the horde of zombies lunging toward them, their faces turned pale with fear.
"I’m a police officer, here to rescue you! Get on board, quickly!"
Wang Dingbei’s fishing boat pulled alongside. Amidst the horde of zombies continuously leaping into the sea around them, they managed to rescue all nine people from the speedboat.
Two of them, their faces covered in blood, had already passed out. The others had injuries of varying degrees, but none looked life-threatening.
"Quick, back to the cruise ship! They need a doctor!" Jing Yanwei shouted.
"Wait! I need two people. Come with me and we’ll take this speedboat, too."
Wang Dingbei leaped onto the speedboat, picked up the AK-103 from the floor, felt it over, then switched off the safety and aimed at a zombie on the shore of C Port.
BANG!
Blood blossomed from the zombie’s head as it snapped backward and fell to the ground, silenced.
Very satisfying!
When the gunshot rang out, some of the zombies that hadn’t found a target immediately whipped their heads around and lunged toward the sea!
SPLASH~ SPLASH~ SPLASH~
The water beneath the speedboat was now completely filled with zombies, a black sea of the undead.
By now, the other speedboat was far in the distance. Wang Dingbei stood with the AK in hand, his face a mask of frustration.
As they were heading back, Wang Dingbei saw a person floating in the water... The zombies that had fallen into the sea were all thrashing furiously toward the figure.
"Get him out of the water!"
...
A short while later, everyone had returned to A Port.
The logistics team, who had been waiting, brought out some simple stretchers and carried all ten people onto the ship.
Lin Mo: "Huh? I thought there were only nine. Good thing I had them prep a few extra."
"I rescued Yin Shuangyang, too..." Wang Dingbei said, his expression grim.
The speedboat that had just escaped was bothering him.
The attack, already imperfect, had not only harmed the hostages but also let an unknown number of enemies get away...
He looked at Yu Dong, who was also looking at him.
"Officer Wang, this was the best we could do under the circumstances... It’s better than letting them all get away. Plus, we captured a batch of guns and ammunition."
On that speedboat, besides the AK that Wang Dingbei had taken, there were several other guns.
"Forget it. We’ll talk later. You, come with me." Wang Dingbei didn’t say more, leading Yu Dong to the ship’s infirmary.
He made a beeline for Yin Shuangyang’s room.
A female doctor was cutting away the clothes on Yin Shuangyang’s back and pressing an entire pack of sterile gauze onto the bloody, mangled flesh.
She followed up with a pressure bandage to stop the bleeding.
Next, she lifted his chin, used forceps to pull out the blood clots and foreign matter stuck in his throat, and then plunged a needle directly into the second intercostal space at the midclavicular line to perform a decompression...
"Haaaah—"
Yin Shuangyang sprayed a mouthful of bloody water and finally managed to gasp for air.
The blast had caused massive internal bleeding, and then he had nearly choked to death on seawater.
After performing a few more emergency procedures, the doctor checked Yin Shuangyang’s condition and injuries, then turned to Yu Dong and Wang Dingbei and shook her head.
He couldn’t be saved.
His internal injuries were too severe. He would need a major operation by a top-tier surgeon to even have a chance of survival. Here... she lacked the skills, and they lacked the facilities.
"Make him comfortable enough to say his last words."
"Okay."
The doctor gave him a shot of adrenaline, forcibly pulling Yin Shuangyang back from the brink.
Yin Shuangyang felt a sliver of his strength return. He lifted his head, saw Wang Dingbei and Yu Dong by his bed, and blinked in astonishment.
"You... You people?"
"That’s right. We’re the ones who attacked you, President Yin. I said I’d take your life, and I wasn’t about to let you live." Wang Dingbei’s face was still full of hatred as he looked at the dying Yin Shuangyang.
For the past two years, he had often dreamed of his two apprentices who died in a sea of fire...
Everyone in the criminal investigation department knew that Yin Shuangyang had ordered Zou Long to do it, but they could never catch Zou Long or get any evidence. They could only watch as Yin Shuangyang remained at large, beyond the reach of the law.
"Cough, cough!" Yin Shuangyang spat out a mouthful of fresh blood and then took a long, deep breath.
Suddenly, a lot of color returned to his face. The pain lessened, a bit of strength flowed back into his body, and he found the energy to speak. His mind, which had been muddled by the explosion, began to spin rapidly again—even faster than usual.
"Drone bombs... A clever move. Doesn’t seem like Officer Wang’s style. Was this Yu Dong’s doing? Cough, cough~ Interesting."
Wang Dingbei stared at Yin Shuangyang and said, "Who else was on that speedboat? How many?"
"Officer Wang... you bomb me, and then you expect me to sell out my brothers... That’s not how it works."
"Speak! Or I’ll make sure your death is anything but peaceful!"
"Doesn’t matter. I’m dying anyway. But you people... don’t think you’ll get to live, either. You let the real starving wolf get away."
Yu Dong asked, "Is it Zou Long?"
Yin Shuangyang looked at Yu Dong, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, his expression one of surprise.
"You answer one question for me, and I’ll tell you... How on earth did you get my ledger?"
