Dungeon Miner Slave
DMS Chapter 227
Flinx and the elves’ discussion lasted for several hours. Eventually, it was time for them to part ways. Unfortunately, Imanoria still had to continue with the caravan since she had accepted a mission as one of its guards.
She couldn’t simply leave the caravan to take her niece and nephew home, which meant that Elemendora and Arementil would have to accompany her on her travels.
At least they would now be under their aunt’s protection.
The two children started crying when they realized they would be separated from Flinx, which greatly surprised Imanoria.
Flinx explained that the two elven children had become enamored with the gizmos he had given them, and now that they were parting ways, they wouldn’t be able to continue using them.
He saw that Imanoria was curious about why Flinx couldn’t simply let the children keep his gadgets, so he explained that, like his car, the devices ran on technology rather than magic. Without a way to provide fuel for the generator that charged the devices, they would eventually stop working. Because of that, he thought it would be better for the children to return to living their lives without relying on his gadgets.
That only made the children cry harder.
In the end, Flinx gave them back their laptops and tablets and provided them with a solar-powered generator. He thought that even without sunlight, they might be able to activate the generator using magic.
He explained how the solar-powered generator worked, but the issue remained that if their devices broke, there was no guarantee that they could replace them. That meant they would have to be extremely careful when handling them.
“Will your devices not work if we use a spell to fix them if they break?” Imanoria asked.
“You know what? I don’t know. Let’s test it out,” Flinx said.
He purchased a new tablet from his System Shopping Site and deliberately broke it by throwing it hard against the ground. Then he cast the Mending spell on it.
At first, Flinx doubted that the spell would be able to repair the device since it was such a complex piece of technology. However, after several castings, the tablet suddenly started working again.
The two children cheered.
That discovery meant they would be able to use their gadgets for a long time. The Mending spell was a low-level, common spell that almost any mage could cast.
Flinx simply shook his head at the wonders of magic.
Elemendora and Arementil shyly asked Flinx if they could have his music player and speaker as well.
Flinx sighed and handed the gadgets to them.
“Where are you heading next?” Imanoria asked.
Flinx shrugged.
“I have no goal. I’ll just follow the road and enter whatever kingdom I happen to stumble upon. I probably won’t stay long in any of them before continuing my travels.”
“I thought you were heading to Neverwise. With how slowly you walk, we thought that even if we went to Numidor, we would still catch up with you,” Elemendora said.
Flinx shrugged again.
“If the road leads me to the kingdom of Neverwise, then I’ll look for you there. But you’ve seen the way I travel.”
After he said that, Elemendora and Arementil suddenly rushed toward him and hugged him fiercely, greatly surprising the other elves.
Elves weren’t a people who openly displayed affection in public, as Flinx had come to learn, but no one could deny that the two children had grown truly close to him.
Even though it was already late afternoon, Flinx dispelled his Galder’s Tower and started walking down the road. He had no intention of entering the town.
When he looked back, he saw Elemendora and Arementil both watching him sadly. He waved and smiled at them, which only made the two children cry harder.
After that, Flinx continued without looking back.
He sincerely wished them well and hoped that, with their aunt’s help, they would be able to resolve whatever problems had forced them to flee.
At the very least, he had given them plenty of things to remember him by.
He let them keep their laptops and tablets, along with his music player and speaker. He also gave them the solar-powered generator he had purchased so they could keep their devices charged. He even handed over all of his music albums and the movie DVDs he had purchased.
He could always buy them again from his System Shopping Site.
In the meantime, Flinx was glad to have returned to his solitary journey. He still loved traveling alone and intended to enjoy it for as long as he could.
Even after the sun had fully set, Flinx decided to continue walking. The road was bright enough with the moon overhead.
After a while, he thought that his decision to continue traveling through the night had been a good one. The world possessed a different kind of beauty at night.
At first, he had expected the darkness to make the surrounding area feel creepy, but Flinx found that it only made the world appear more magical.
He could feel the mana in the air and see tiny fluctuations within the forest.
He knew that ordinary people would see illusions within those tiny bursts of mana, and those illusions would probably scare the hell out of them. Flinx, however, saw only beautiful bursts of magic, like tiny flowers that suddenly bloomed and vanished, or tiny firecrackers spinning through the sky and living out their glorious existence within a few seconds.
Flinx tried capturing those magical moments with his tablet, but unfortunately, the tablet couldn’t record the bursts of mana.
He wondered why.
Was it because the phenomenon lasted for such a short time?
In truth, he hadn’t tested whether his gadgets could record illusion spells, so he planned to test it at some point.
When the sun began to rise, Flinx stopped to eat breakfast. Afterward, he continued walking.
He would sometimes enter the forest to admire the different flora and fauna covered in the beauty of autumn, but he always remained relatively close to the road.
Whenever he encountered a brook or spring, he would stop to admire its beauty.
If a wild animal approached him, he simply drove it away with a small burst of magic, which was usually enough. Any monster that came near him would either be driven away or killed by Pip or his wind elemental.
Over the next few days, Flinx continued his solitary journey.
Whenever it was time to stop and rest, he would talk to his friends on Earth for a while or check in with Olivia and the four children back in Ilioven to make sure they were doing well.
And that was it.
When it was time for his therapy session with Dr. Mendez, Flinx would fetch the doctor from Earth and spend a few hours talking with him.
During his fourth session with Dr. Mendez, however, Flinx could tell that the doctor’s mind was elsewhere.
“Is something bothering you?” Flinx asked.
Dr. Mendez simply told him that he was fine.
A few more days passed.
Then Flinx received an emergency notification from Paul.
It was a code they had agreed to use whenever something momentous happened.
“Dr. Mendez betrayed us,” Paul said.
Apparently, four of them had been captured by people they initially believed to be ICE agents. However, they soon discovered that the people responsible were actually members of either a special department of the government or a powerful private organization.
It was obvious that either the government or a private organization had discovered their use of magic through the magic items they had brought back from the second world.
Even worse, Dr. Mendez and some of the other psychiatrists treating them had apparently been unethically reporting the contents of their therapy sessions to the government.
Now, everyone was on the run.
