Chapter 287: First Root

The captured frame gave Merrit’s technicians a way to recognize the siege seed.

Every joint carried a repeating pattern that regulated growth, observation, and recovery. The frame did not think independently. It gathered information and returned it through the filaments to the object that created it.

The siege seed made the decisions.

"Can you use the pattern to disable it?" Max asked.

"Not from here." Merrit replied. "The frame contains instructions for a limb, not the entire device. We can interrupt communication and prevent recovery. Destroying the source still requires reaching it."

The technicians dismantled one outer joint without separating the central structure. Beneath the pale surface lay thin metal threads surrounded by hardened sap. The siege seed had not created the frames entirely from Orchard material. It consumed small portions of its own stored metal whenever it produced one.

"Then the supply is limited." Dagar said.

"Probably." Merrit replied. "We do not know how much material the original object contained."

Edrin estimated the weapon had created at least eleven frames. The recovered joint showed no sign that production strained the seed.

Waiting for it to exhaust itself remained possible only if Edrin surrendered the western district and allowed the weapon to keep learning. No one recommended the approach.

Merrit wanted to carry the captured frame during the assault so its pattern could guide the detection instruments. Veyrath refused to place the entire sample near First Root.

"If the seed recovers it, we return everything the frame learned."

The technicians removed one inert plate and left the central record sealed on the isolated receiving platform. The plate provided a detection reference without carrying the complete memory back to its creator.

Edrin had prepared First Root for separation during the false-road operation. He cleared the remaining repair crews, redirected supplies, and warned the three producing groves that their western channels might close. Residents began moving stored food before he issued the final command.

The preparation made secrecy impossible. Families watched wagons leave the western groves and asked whether they would follow. Halden issued the warning Edrin had approved.

Foreign equipment from the challenge had compromised the oldest roads. Current evacuation orders would include a changing verification mark delivered by wardens in person. Any instruction spoken by a road, wall, or familiar voice without the mark should be ignored.

Residents responded with practical questions. Which bridges remained safe? Would stored fruit be protected? Where should children go if the paths separated them from their families?

Wardens answered what they could. They admitted uncertainty where routes might change. The notice created fear, but it also prevented the siege seed from using an old emergency phrase to move an entire village.

Edrin listened through Halden’s reports.

"They know First Root is involved." he said privately to Max.

"They know the western district is involved."

"The difference will not last."

"Then the residents will judge the decision after you make it."

Edrin had protected First Root partly because he feared what its loss would mean to them. He was beginning to accept that they might value survival more than preservation.

He had not agreed to sever the tree.

Max did not force the decision before the expedition knew what it would find.

The approach to First Root used a road grown after the challenge. Halden built the commands from new descriptions and changed the final destination twice before the group moved. The route ended above the ancient tree rather than at its base.

From the upper branches, the expedition saw how far the corruption had spread.

First Root rose from the center of a broad depression. Its trunk divided into seven towers supporting an empty canopy settlement. Bridges hung between abandoned homes. Old damage marked one side where invaders had burned through the bark.

Pale lines filled the wound.

They extended down the trunk and into every major root.

The living weapon near the watch platform had returned. Its body was larger and more regular than before. Four heavy legs supported layered wooden armor. Two narrower limbs ended in hooked blades formed from hardened branches. The pale frame remained hidden.

Smaller creatures moved around it. Each contained only enough foreign material to shape one task: climbing, digging, carrying, or watching.

The siege seed had created workers as well as a weapon.

Dagar’s officer wanted to attack from above.

"We can destroy the small bodies before they scatter."

Veyrath refused. "Our objective is the seed. An early attack gives the main body time to move it."

"Assuming the object can move."

"The workers are carrying something toward the old core route."

The elite scout confirmed the observation. Pale pieces traveled between the wound and a hollow root opening on the eastern side.

The seed was preparing to relocate.

The old core route offered the most likely destination, but the workers carried pieces in separate directions before returning to the same opening. Merrit’s technician believed the behavior concealed which piece contained the seed.

Veyrath changed the approach. Dagar’s squad would threaten the eastern root strongly enough to force the large weapon into a visible defense. Sanctuary’s elite team and the technicians would descend through the trunk. Orchard wardens would control their route and remain responsible for any terrain that needed to be cut.

No group would pursue a carrier beyond First Root. The seed could not be allowed to scatter them through the western network.

Dagar’s officer disliked serving as the visible threat while another team approached the objective.

"The weapon has fought us more often." he said. "It will consider our movement credible."

"You object to being well suited?" Veyrath asked.

"I object to my soldiers absorbing the response while technicians reach the prize."

Merrit’s senior technician answered him. "We are reaching an object embedded inside a hostile tree. No one has assigned us the safer path."

The officer accepted the correction. His concern involved unequal risk, not recognition. Once the risk was stated accurately, he prepared his squad for the diversion.

Edrin listened from outside the expedition channel. Halden relayed a new command allowing the upper road to descend along the uninjured side of First Root.

The route began moving.

Every creature below stopped.

The large weapon turned its featureless head toward the descending branch.

It recognized a new command even if it could not reproduce one.

The smaller bodies climbed.

Veyrath ordered the expedition forward before the road became a trap. Dagar’s soldiers formed the front rank. Sanctuary’s elite team guarded the technicians and Halden’s wardens while ranged attacks cut climbing tendrils from the branch.

The large weapon struck the base of their route.

First Root obeyed Edrin’s command and continued lowering. The branch held long enough for the expedition to reach the trunk, then broke behind them.

Retreat now required a different road.

They entered the empty settlement through a house whose inner wall opened into the trunk. Pale filaments lined the passage. Merrit’s technician marked them without cutting. Severing every connection would warn the siege seed which route the expedition used.

The group descended through living chambers abandoned after the challenge. Furniture remained where residents left it. Repair tools lay beside sealed wounds. Edrin had preserved the settlement as if people might return once First Root healed.

Names had been carved beside several doors. A child’s height marks climbed one wall and stopped shortly before the challenge. Bowls carved from fallen wood remained stacked in a kitchen. Nothing had decayed because the living chambers regulated moisture and air even while empty.

Halden paused beside an oath mark cut into the floor.

"Every senior warden stood here before taking command of a district." he said.

"Including you?" the elite captain asked.

"Including me."

"Can you cut the tree if Edrin orders it?"

Halden looked down the passage where pale strands entered the walls.

"My oath was to protect the Last Orchard. First Root witnessed it. The tree was never the recipient."

He moved on before attachment could slow the expedition.

The siege seed had used the delay to occupy everything below them.

At the third chamber, a familiar voice came through the wall.

"Open the lower passage and continue to the eastern root."

The voice belonged to Edrin.

Halden did not respond.

The wall repeated the order.

"Open the lower passage and continue to the eastern root."

The words matched an instruction Edrin issued during the challenge. The lower passage once led toward the core.

Veyrath selected the western stair instead.

The large weapon entered the settlement above them.

Dagar’s diversion had drawn it east until the descending road reached the trunk. The creature recognized the second group and abandoned the soldiers rather than defend the wrong approach.

The Redoubt squad followed only far enough to remain a threat. They struck smaller frames, withdrew from every closing road, and forced the weapon to spend material blocking positions no one intended to hold.

The tactic used the weakness discovered in the captured record. Each Redoubt withdrawal appeared to confirm that the weapon had protected another important point.

By the time it recognized the real descent, Veyrath’s group had passed two defensible chambers.

Its body did not fit the narrow chambers. It broke through floors and internal walls, using material from First Root to replace every damaged limb. The dungeon’s oldest tree supplied an almost unlimited body.

The expedition could not defeat it while the connection remained.

Merrit’s technicians reached the original battle wound. Foreign lines converged inside a cavity covered by new bark. Their detection frame could not see through the overlapping magic.

Halden asked Edrin for permission to open the wound.

The answer took several seconds.

"Open it."

Orchard wardens cut along the edges of the old damage rather than through healthy wood. The bark separated slowly. A metal object rested inside the trunk.

The siege seed was smaller than the case that carried it. Six black arms anchored an oval core against the heartwood. Pale material flowed from its lower edge into the surrounding roots. Runes across its surface changed whenever one of the living weapons moved.

The original case had protected and concealed the seed until its arms could enter the tree.

The device showed no resemblance to a living seed beyond its purpose. Metal plates formed the oval core. The anchoring arms ended in rotating teeth that cut into wood and sealed the openings behind them. A narrow chamber inside the split casing contained compressed foreign material for the frames.

Merrit’s technician studied it for only seconds.

"The delayed runes are gone." he said. "The device consumed them when it activated. Every active mark now serves production or control."

"Can you shut it down?" Veyrath asked.

"If I reach the central plate."

The plate faced inward against the heartwood. Removing the seed safely required cutting all six arms and turning the core without allowing another anchor to form.

Even without the living weapon approaching, the work would take longer than the chamber remained secure.

Merrit’s senior technician approached with the remaining disruption device.

The seed folded two arms inward.

The wall beside him opened.

The large weapon drove a hooked limb through the chamber. Dagar’s soldiers caught it on their shields, but the impact pushed the entire line backward.

Veyrath ordered the technician away from the seed. The elite team pulled the Redoubt soldiers clear before the creature tore away the floor.

The siege seed withdrew deeper into First Root.

The movement confirmed the object could relocate, but not freely. It used the anchoring arms one at a time, cutting a new hold before releasing the previous one. The surrounding wood closed behind it under commands copied from Edrin’s old repair patterns.

Merrit’s technician marked the direction and distance before the metal disappeared. The seed was moving toward the central root junction rather than the abandoned eastern passage.

"It no longer believes the old core route is open." Quin said from Sanctuary. "It is seeking enough connected terrain to find a new one."

The failed removal had cost them secrecy. It had also forced the seed to reveal its next objective.

Metal disappeared beneath living wood. Pale lines spread into the central root faster than the technicians could follow.
