Chapter 286: A Road to Nowhere

  • Next Chapter

The siege seed knew the Last Orchard’s old commands.

It knew which roads had once carried defenders, which roots had supplied the western groves, and which abandoned passage had approached Edrin’s core during the First Challenge.

It did not know a route Edrin had never used.

Quin turned the limitation into a plan.

"Create a new priority route." he said. "Make the siege seed believe the road carries something important enough to protect."

Edrin received the proposal through his private channel with Max, Dagar, and Merrit.

"It watches energy and commands." Edrin said. "A road created without a purpose will not deceive it."

"Then give the road a purpose." Merrit replied. "Move supplies through it. Assign wardens. Send enough power to resemble a core-support route."

"You want me to teach the weapon a new road."

"We want to choose what it learns." Max said.

The false route would begin near a producing grove and travel toward an isolated basin south of First Root. The basin contained no residents and no connection to the core. Edrin could cut every surrounding root without damaging inhabited sections.

For six hours, Orchard wardens would treat the route as essential. They would carry sealed crates, reinforce bridges, and refuse foreign access in places where the weapon could observe them. The crates would contain stone and water rather than valuable supplies.

Merrit’s technicians would conceal disruption devices beneath the road. Dagar’s soldiers would establish three containment positions outside the basin. Sanctuary’s elite team would wait beyond the route’s apparent destination.

If the living weapon attacked, they would isolate its body and trace the pale frame’s connection back toward the siege seed.

Edrin remained doubtful.

"The weapon may ignore the route."

"Then we lose six hours and learn it does not respond to staged priorities." Quin said.

"Six hours gives it time to continue searching for my core."

"A direct assault on First Root could cost the tree before you decide whether to sever it." Max replied.

The final point decided him.

Edrin approved the false route.

The plan required the Orchard to perform importance without issuing a single false command to its residents. Halden refused to use wardens who believed the crates contained real supplies.

"They must know what danger they are drawing." he said.

Edrin agreed. Twelve wardens volunteered after receiving the same information as the foreign expedition. Four had family in the producing groves that would be threatened if the siege seed reached the western channels. Three wanted to recover the roads where their missing companions had been held. The others served because creating safe movement through living terrain belonged to their ordinary duty.

Halden rejected two volunteers who treated the operation as a chance to avenge First Root. Anger did not disqualify them from every task, but the escort needed people willing to abandon the crates when ordered.

Dagar approved the standard.

"A defender who values the object more than the formation becomes another obstacle."

His officer asked whether the Redoubt applied the same rule often enough. Dagar promised to review it rather than answer defensively.

Halden created every command from new language. He avoided the names of old roads and described exact landmarks grown after the challenge. Wardens repeated no instruction aloud once the terrain responded.

The road took shape as a broad root rising above a shallow lake. It curved around three young trees and ended at the isolated basin. Workers added visible support branches and marked the route with symbols indicating restricted transport.

The siege seed observed them.

Small changes appeared at the edge of the region. Leaves turned toward the construction. Thin roots emerged from older branches and withdrew when wardens approached. A false bridge opened toward the new road and vanished after no one used it.

The weapon was testing how the Orchard valued the route.

Dagar wanted to increase the deception by placing soldiers around the sealed crates. Merrit disagreed.

"Foreign guards imply the contents belong to us."

"Foreign guards imply value."

"The weapon has learned Edrin’s behavior, not yours. Orchard wardens should protect Orchard supplies."

Halden supported Merrit. He assigned his own wardens to the visible escort while Dagar’s squad remained hidden near the basin.

Max listened without deciding for them. The field commanders possessed better information, and no Sanctuary principle depended on which uniforms stood beside empty crates.

Veyrath asked Max to confirm the gate response if the weapon marked another person.

"The gate remains closed until the expedition returns to the isolated platform." Max said. "Every person and item undergoes inspection. Anyone still carrying foreign residue stays in the Orchard until the mark is removed."

"If removal fails?"

"The person crosses without marked equipment only after two clean inspections. No living plant material enters Sanctuary."

The procedure could not promise immediate rescue. It did give the team a known standard before the attack began.

The first sealed crate reached the basin without interference.

Wardens followed the routine prepared for the deception. They inspected the seals, recorded the arrival, and returned by a different branch. No one looked toward the hidden soldiers.

The siege seed altered two nearby roads during the second trip. One shortened the distance to First Root. The other opened a clear view of the basin from an abandoned platform.

The wardens ignored both. They used only the route Halden had approved.

Merrit’s technicians observed a pulse of foreign residue each time a crate crossed the midpoint. The signal traveled beneath the road too quickly to trace, but its strength increased with the controlled flow of dungeon energy.

"It believes the route matters." the senior technician reported.

"Or it wants us to believe the deception worked." Veyrath said.

The distinction changed nothing. Every containment position remained concealed until a body committed to the basin.

The second crossed as the false route began carrying a controlled flow of dungeon energy. Edrin directed enough power to be noticed without weakening defenses around his core.

The third crate never arrived.

Wood erupted beneath the escort. The false route split into ribs that folded around four Orchard wardens. Pale frames drove upward from inside the root and began gathering material.

The siege seed had not sent one living weapon.

It had sent three unfinished bodies.

Halden issued the withdrawal command. The wardens used tools rather than waiting for the road to obey. Two cut through the wooden ribs. A third held an opening while the trapped escort escaped.

Merrit’s hidden devices activated.

The first pulse stripped living wood from the nearest frame. Dagar’s soldiers struck before roots could rebuild around it. Their hammers broke jointed sections and pinned the pieces beneath weighted nets.

The second body reached the basin. Sanctuary’s elite team allowed it to enter rather than closing the trap too early. The ranged fighter severed tendrils reaching toward the surrounding trees. Defensive specialists held the body against the basin wall.

The third body turned away.

It had recognized the containment positions.

The creature did not retreat toward First Root. It moved toward the wardens withdrawing with the empty crates.

Veyrath shifted the Sanctuary ranged fighter without exposing the rest of the line. Two shots broke the creature’s front climbing limbs. An Orchard warden cut the road behind the escort, leaving the unfinished body on an isolated section.

The frame responded by abandoning its wooden armor. Pale joints pulled free and attempted to cross the gap alone.

Dagar’s rear position had remained hidden for exactly that movement. Weighted nets caught the frame in open air and dragged it into the water below. The foreign material continued moving beneath the surface, but it could no longer reach living wood.

The soldiers did not pursue it into the lake. Merrit’s technician marked the location for later recovery and kept the disruption devices focused on the body already inside the basin.

"Let it withdraw." Veyrath ordered.

Dagar’s officer objected. "It will warn the source."

"The source already receives information through the frames. Chasing it exposes the route we used to enter."

The Redoubt soldiers maintained their positions.

The captured body continued fighting after its plant material had been cut away. Its pale frame folded and unfolded against the restraints, searching for any surface it could pierce.

Merrit’s senior technician applied a narrow disruption field directly to its central joint.

A line of foreign magic became visible.

It extended from the frame through the basin wall and into the surrounding root network.

The technician altered the field. The line brightened across several yards, vanished beneath the false route, and reappeared heading north.

Toward First Root.

They had confirmed the direction, but the line carried more than communication.

The frame began collapsing inward. Its joints softened into a pale liquid that traveled along the foreign connection.

"It is recovering the material." the technician said.

Veyrath ordered the line severed.

The elite scout cut through the basin wall at the point selected by the technician. Inside lay another filament. He clamped both ends before dividing it.

The captured frame stopped dissolving.

For the first time, they possessed an intact piece the siege seed could not reclaim.

The technician inspected the central joint.

Marks covered its inner surface. Some matched the broken clasp. Others formed a record of movement, resistance, and damage experienced by the living weapon.

The frame had been returning more than material.

Every fight taught the siege seed how to build the next body.

The record inside the frame also revealed what it failed to understand. Several marks repeated whenever defenders withdrew instead of holding ground. The siege seed classified the movement as successful pressure rather than a deliberate refusal to defend an unimportant position.

Veyrath recognized the same lesson Max had struggled with during training. The weapon expected strength to remain attached to ground once challenged.

The expedition could exploit the expectation, but only once. After another controlled withdrawal, the returned frame would teach the siege seed a different meaning.

They planned to spend the advantage at First Root.

Before ending the false-road operation, the Orchard wardens recovered the frame that had fallen into the lake. Water had slowed its movement without damaging the metal threads inside. Merrit’s technicians sealed it separately from the first sample and compared their records.

The second frame contained new responses to weighted nets and ranged attacks. It did not contain the full history recorded by the body captured in the basin. Each frame learned locally before returning information to the seed.

Veyrath adjusted the assault plan. The expedition would prevent every encountered frame from escaping, but it would not waste time destroying bodies already cut away from the root network. Isolation mattered more than visible damage.

Halden assigned wardens to watch the severed false route after the foreign forces withdrew. If new growth attempted to recover either battlefield, they would kill the connecting root rather than investigate it alone.
