Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Chapter 285: The Cost of Assistance

Anna closed the exchange gate before the filament reached its edge.

The branch supporting the Orchard platform remained visible for several seconds as the opening narrowed. Pale wood split along its center. A jointed strand pushed through the crack and extended toward Sanctuary.

The gate vanished before it crossed.

Sanctuary’s receiving room became an ordinary sealed chamber. Veyrath, the elite team, Dagar’s soldiers, Merrit’s technicians, and the Last Orchard remained on the other side.

Max confirmed the closure through the core. No foreign object had entered Sanctuary. The receiving barriers detected no residue, and the stone surrounding the former opening remained unchanged.

Anna did not reopen the gate.

"The field group still has communication." she said.

Veyrath reported thirty seconds later.

The supporting branch had torn open after the closure. Orchard wardens severed it from the platform while the foreign groups withdrew into the village. They recovered a length of pale filament before the rest retreated into the wood.

No one was injured.

"Keep the gate closed." Veyrath said. "The receiving location is compromised."

Edrin joined the report.

"I can grow another platform in the northern settlement."

"Not until we understand how the filament found the current one." Max replied.

The gate agreement had worked as intended. Anna recognized a threat, acted without waiting for Max to finish considering it, and prevented the danger from reaching Sanctuary. The same success left their people temporarily stranded in a foreign dungeon.

Dagar treated the isolation as proof that the operation required stronger command.

"My officer should have authority to secure the receiving village and every route entering it." he said.

Edrin rejected the demand.

"Your officer commands five soldiers. He does not command my residents or terrain."

"Your terrain attempted to cross the gate."

"The siege weapon attempted to cross."

"Using power you control poorly."

Max stopped the exchange before Dagar turned a precise failure into a judgment on Edrin’s entire rule.

"Veyrath commands the foreign expedition under the agreement." Max said. "Halden commands local wardens. Edrin controls the terrain. The gate remains closed from my side. No command structure changes because the receiving platform was compromised."

"Conditions changed." Dagar replied.

"The agreement already accounts for an immediate threat. Your officer can defend his soldiers and withdraw them from danger. He cannot occupy a village."

Dagar did not withdraw his demand because he had suddenly become convinced. He withdrew it because Max was enforcing the same limits the concord had placed on Sanctuary.

Merrit presented a different problem.

His technicians had used one disruption device and six sealed clamps. The captured filament had already damaged a detection frame while they examined it. He wanted Edrin to approve payment before authorizing more equipment.

"The operation has not ended." Edrin said.

"Neither have my expenses."

"Send the account afterward."

"Afterward is when a desperate Dungeon Master remembers every reason the equipment benefited someone else."

Edrin heard the accusation beneath the commercial language.

"You believe I intend to avoid payment."

"I believe clear terms preserve cooperation when gratitude fades."

Quin reviewed the original agreement. Reasonable consumed tools would be reimbursed after the operation according to documented cost. Merrit could send estimates, but he could not suspend tools already committed merely to force early payment.

"I can refuse to send replacements." Merrit said.

"You can." Max replied. "Your current technicians can also decide whether using their remaining equipment is necessary for their safety. The Concord will record which choice you make."

Merrit disliked the answer. A formal refusal might protect his inventory while damaging the reputation on which his exchanges depended.

He authorized one replacement disruption device and required confirmation before sending anything else.

The replacement could not cross until a safe platform existed.

Veyrath used the captured filament to determine how the siege seed located the gate. The pale inner strand had wrapped itself around a fresh root grown after the challenge. It could not have remembered the platform from older commands.

The weapon had followed something current.

Merrit’s technicians found a trace of foreign magic inside the communication token carried by the captain. The trace was too weak to issue commands or alter the token. It behaved like a mark.

The creature near the watch platform had focused on the token long enough to place it.

The mark allowed the siege seed to follow the token’s movement back to the gate.

The discovery changed the meaning of every previous withdrawal. The siege seed had not needed to place a creature beside the receiving platform. It allowed the expedition to carry a path for it.

Veyrath ordered a record of who had touched each marked object after the first encounter. Orchard wardens reconstructed the movements from watch assignments. The marked shield had rested against a village railing for several minutes. The scout’s boot crossed three living roads. The collection clamps had been carried through the storage chamber where the missing wardens were found.

Merrit’s technicians inspected all four locations. Each contained the beginning of a pale filament, but none had grown far enough to connect with the western network.

Edrin killed the contaminated sections after residents cleared the surrounding structures. The loss amounted to one railing, part of an uninhabited road, and the inner wall of the storage chamber.

Small damage did not make the method less dangerous. A marked traveler could have crossed the entire Orchard without knowing every step planted another point of access.

"The weapon does not need to defeat a gate guard." Anna said. "It needs someone trusted to carry a mark past one."

Max added disruption inspection to every Orchard crossing. The restriction applied to the expedition as well as Edrin’s residents. A Sanctuary uniform did not make someone incapable of carrying hostile magic.

Every item exposed during the first encounter required inspection. The search found marks on one shield, two collection clamps, and the scout’s left boot. None had activated before the group reached the receiving village.

"It could have followed any of them into Sanctuary." Anna said.

"Closing the gate prevented the first attempt." Max replied. "We need a method to remove the marks before reopening it."

Merrit’s technicians could detect the residue now that they knew what to seek. Removal remained uncertain. A strong disruption pulse might strip the marks, but it could also damage Orchard growth or equipment enchanted by the Thousand Works.

Edrin offered an empty section of dead wood beyond the village. The expedition moved marked equipment there and tested the pulse at increasing strength. The third setting removed the foreign residue without damaging metal or leather. Living bark withered within several inches of the field.

The weapon could be denied a route into Sanctuary, but only if every returning person and object underwent inspection.

Max authorized construction of a new receiving platform after Edrin isolated its roots from the wider Orchard. The platform would remain physically separate except when the gate opened. Residents could reach it by removable bridges rather than living branches.

The solution offended Edrin more than he admitted. His dungeon relied on connection. A platform deliberately cut away from its living network resembled a dead island.

"The separation is temporary." Max said.

"The siege seed has forced me to build against the nature of my own dungeon."

"Only at one gate."

"One gate proves the principle."

Max did not tell him the concern was meaningless. Sanctuary’s receiving room also contradicted the openness Max preferred. Walls, inspections, and restricted routes existed because other people could abuse access.

"You decide which compromises become permanent after the danger ends." Max said. "For now, the isolated platform gives your guests a safe route home."

Edrin approved the work.

While the new platform grew, Quin studied every false command. He found that the weapon reacted more quickly whenever Edrin issued a command through the expedition channel. Orders delivered privately through Halden took longer to copy.

The communication link was teaching the siege seed.

Max ended Edrin’s access to the main expedition channel. Edrin could still speak privately with Halden and the Concord’s Dungeon Masters. Veyrath received terrain instructions through the chief warden instead of hearing them directly from Edrin.

Edrin objected.

"You are limiting my ability to direct an operation inside my dungeon."

"We are limiting the audience receiving your commands." Quin said. "The siege seed has heard you since the first conversation. Halden can relay newly phrased instructions without broadcasting the original authority pattern."

"I should not have to hide my commands from my own terrain."

"You should not." Max replied. "The weapon does not care what should be necessary."

Edrin accepted the restriction.

The decision produced the first measurable improvement. False roads continued appearing, but none responded to Halden’s newly phrased orders. The weapon could monitor local movement through its filaments. It could no longer copy Edrin immediately.

Veyrath prepared to return to the altered region.

Before he left, Max asked whether the expedition still accepted the risk. The elite team had volunteered for an investigation, not indefinite isolation inside a compromised dungeon.

The captain answered for his soldiers only after speaking with each one. All six remained willing. Dagar’s officer reported the same result from his squad. Merrit’s technicians agreed to continue until they located the original device, but reserved the right to withdraw if Edrin again concealed operational information.

Max accepted every condition.

The new receiving platform finished growing before dawn. Edrin severed it from the Orchard himself.

When the gate reopened, nothing reached toward Sanctuary.

The replacement equipment crossed first. Every surface passed through a disruption field before leaving the receiving room.

Max sent no reinforcements.

The decision produced questions from members of the elite reserve. Their team had people stranded in another dungeon, and an unopened gate looked like inaction from the Sanctuary side.

Veyrath addressed them directly. Reinforcements would not improve the available detection work, and every additional person created another surface the siege seed could mark. The reserve would prepare the receiving room, maintain equipment, and remain ready if the expedition requested replacement personnel.

One soldier asked whether loyalty required volunteering to cross.

"Loyalty requires improving the mission." Veyrath replied. "Entering because remaining behind feels lesser is pride."

Max did not speak after him. Adding his approval would have turned a command lesson into praise sought from the person being protected.

Anna watched the reserve return to its assignments.

"You would have crossed a few months ago." she said.

"I would have called it sharing the risk."

"And now?"

"The risk is not shared evenly. My death costs the dungeon millions of DP. My presence changes their formation. The siege seed also follows command authority."
