Chapter 284: The Region That Listened

  • Next Chapter

Edrin ended the field communication for eleven minutes.

He did not close the gate or order the expedition out of the Last Orchard. He simply stopped answering questions about the oldest tree.

Veyrath used the delay to return everyone to the receiving settlement. The living weapon did not pursue them beyond the edge of the altered region. It reshaped roads behind their withdrawal and left the offered bridge connected to the gate platform.

The words on the bridge changed.

[WARDENS RECOVERED. ASSISTANCE COMPLETE.]

"It wants us to leave." Dagar’s officer said.

"Or it heard enough negotiations to know when assistance might end." Veyrath replied.

Merrit’s technician placed a detection frame near the branch. No foreign residue appeared.

The weapon continued using Edrin’s power to deliver its messages.

Max waited in the core room while Edrin remained absent. Anna did not recommend closing the gate. The receiving platform was still secure, and withdrawing before the field team returned would violate the agreement without evidence of an immediate threat to Sanctuary.

Quin reorganized the expedition record into confirmed facts.

An artificial object survived the challenge. The object remained inactive long enough to avoid detection. It created at least one pale frame. A frame gathered living material and shaped it into a mobile weapon. Thin filaments allowed the weapon or its creator to observe distant parts of the Orchard. The influence copied old commands and learned from current conversations.

The oldest tree remained the probable location of the original device.

"Why hide a tree everyone already knows exists?" Anna asked.

"Edrin did not hide its existence." Quin replied. "He removed its location and importance from the map."

"The difference will matter to him."

"The difference may matter legally. It does not change what the expedition needs."

Edrin returned to the channel.

"The tree is called First Root." he said. "I created it when the system granted my dungeon."

Max understood the pause more clearly.

His first rooms had been crude compared with Sanctuary. He had replaced structures, expanded routes, and allowed residents to rebuild areas without asking him. None of those places formed the living foundation of every later creation.

First Root did.

"Does the tree control the rest of the Orchard?" Max asked.

"No. It anchors the oldest western routes and supplies several younger groves. The core does not depend on it."

"Residents?"

"The inhabited chambers were evacuated after the challenge. No one has returned because repairs remained incomplete."

"Why did the repairs remain incomplete?" Merrit asked.

Edrin answered with visible reluctance even without an image.

The attacker’s case had been opened near a wound in First Root. After the battle, Edrin found several blackened roots and removed them. The tree continued resisting some repairs. He assumed the damage came from foreign weapons and allowed the living terrain time to recover naturally.

Nine days ago, First Root responded to a command before Edrin issued it.

He had investigated alone and found nothing active.

"You knew where the current problem began." Dagar said.

"I suspected."

"You withheld the location while our people entered the affected region."

"I did not send them near First Root."

"The weapon did."

Edrin’s defense lost force before he spoke it. The foreign expedition had nearly been trapped on a route leading toward the tree he kept off their map.

"I should have disclosed the suspicion." Edrin said.

Dagar did not accept the admission as sufficient. He wanted his squad withdrawn until Edrin provided complete operational maps.

Merrit wanted the same information for different reasons. The concealed tree might contain the siege seed, and he would not let his technicians work from a map designed to protect Edrin’s feelings.

Max focused on what Edrin feared losing.

"Can First Root be separated from the rest of the dungeon?"

"Possibly."

"What would separation cost?"

"The western roads would collapse. Three producing groves would lose their primary supply routes. Some could be regrown. First Root could not."

"Would separation stop the weapon?"

"If the device is inside the tree."

"Would keeping the tree connected allow the device to continue spreading?"

Edrin knew the answer.

"Yes."

Max did not order him to destroy it. The Last Orchard belonged to Edrin, and the Concord had explicitly refused ownership disguised as emergency authority.

"The expedition will not return to First Root until you provide the routes needed for a safe operation." Max said. "If you refuse, Sanctuary withdraws its people."

"So does the Redoubt." Dagar said.

Merrit agreed.

For the first time since the request arrived, all three members reached the same decision without negotiation.

Edrin released the complete western map.

First Root occupied the center of the altered region. Dozens of old roads radiated from it, including abandoned routes that reached close to the core before later growth replaced them. The weapon had not been wandering toward the core through trial and error. It had been searching for an old route Edrin no longer used.

The map also revealed a series of narrow channels connecting First Root to the producing groves. Every channel could carry sap, water, and magical energy.

The siege seed had access to everything needed to build more bodies.

Quin compared the newly released map with the weapon’s observed movements.

"The creature protected the old core route twice." he said. "It abandoned other positions when challenged. The route matters more than its current body."

Veyrath recommended a full day to plan. Edrin wanted to move sooner, but no longer demanded an immediate attack. His decision to conceal First Root had already placed the expedition at unnecessary risk.

Max assigned tasks.

Merrit’s technicians would determine how to detect the pale frames without suppressing the Orchard’s ordinary magic. Dagar’s officer would design containment positions around the old core route. Veyrath and Halden would plan an approach using commands created after the challenge. Quin would search for patterns showing where the weapon received current information.

Edrin would prepare First Root for possible separation.

"I have not agreed to kill it." Edrin said.

He explained why First Root mattered beyond being old.

When the Last Orchard first formed, Edrin possessed enough authority to create one viable tree and a small clearing around it. First Root grew the earliest shelter chambers before he had residents capable of building their own homes. Its fruit supported the first arrivals through a season when the rest of the dungeon produced almost nothing.

Every major grove contained a cutting descended from it. The Orchard’s wardens still took their oaths beneath its lowest branch. Edrin had moved the ceremony after the challenge without announcing that First Root could no longer be trusted.

"If I destroy it, I destroy the one part of the Orchard that existed before anyone believed the dungeon would survive." he said.

Max understood the statement without accepting it as a reason to endanger residents.

"First Root gave them a beginning." Max replied. "What do the residents believe the tree should cost them now?"

"They do not know separation may be necessary."

"Then your decision protects their history without allowing them to understand the danger." Anna said.

Edrin refused to announce the possible destruction before the expedition confirmed the seed’s location. Panic could empty western settlements unnecessarily and tell the weapon which tree they considered essential.

The operational reason was sound. Max required him to prepare an evacuation notice that Halden could issue immediately if the investigation confirmed the threat.

"Preparation is not the final command." Max replied. "If separation becomes necessary, delay should not decide for you."

Edrin accepted the distinction.

He also authorized Halden to begin redirecting food and medical supplies away from the western roads. The movement would support an evacuation if one became necessary and prevent the weapon from trapping essential stores inside the altered region.

No one treated preparation as surrender.

The danger remained.

The planning exposed another disagreement. Dagar wanted his soldiers stationed along the old core route before the expedition approached First Root. Edrin feared visible fortifications would reveal what they had discovered.

Merrit proposed disguised positions built inside ordinary maintenance shelters. Dagar rejected hiding soldiers in structures residents might enter.

Halden resolved the argument by closing the shelters for a root inspection and assigning Orchard wardens to keep residents away. Dagar’s squad could prepare inside without claiming local authority or lying directly to anyone who asked why the route was restricted.

"A fictional inspection remains a lie." Quin said.

"The roots are being inspected for hostile influence." Halden replied. "The notice omits the soldiers because naming them would reveal the operation."

Quin recorded the wording and accepted it. Concealing tactical placement differed from concealing a known danger from people being sent into it.

Edrin noticed the distinction. He offered no defense of his earlier choice.

Residents near the western roads had already noticed the preparations. Supply carts moved at unusual hours, maintenance shelters closed together, and wardens redirected travelers without announcing a storm or harvest problem.

Halden wanted a limited public warning before rumors supplied one. Edrin approved a notice stating that foreign equipment from the First Challenge had compromised several roads. The notice identified the closed district, named safe alternatives, and instructed residents to ignore any evacuation order that lacked a current warden verification mark.

It did not identify First Root or describe the living weapon.

Max considered the notice incomplete but sufficient for residents outside the operation. They received the information needed to avoid danger and verify genuine instructions. Tactical details remained restricted because the enemy could listen through the terrain.

Veyrath also asked how much authority Halden possessed if communication with Edrin failed. The chief warden could evacuate settlements, close local routes, and destroy minor branches. He could not sever a producing grove or First Root.

"If the siege seed blocks the channel while threatening a major connection, I must wait." Halden said.

Edrin expanded his authority for the duration of the operation. Halden could kill any route carrying confirmed foreign material, provided the destruction did not open a direct path toward the core. He still could not sever First Root without Edrin’s command.

Dagar considered the exception a weakness. Max considered it an honest boundary. Edrin was preparing for action without pretending he had already accepted the largest loss.

The expedition settled inside the receiving village rather than returning to Sanctuary. Leaving and reentering would expose the gate schedule and give the weapon another opportunity to observe who crossed. The visitors slept in buildings selected by residents, ate Orchard food, and maintained their own watches without displacing local wardens.

Near midnight, Merrit’s detection frames activated together.

No creature had entered the village.

A pale filament had grown inside the branch supporting the gate platform
