Chapter 283: What Grew Afterwards

The mouth closed around empty air.

Veyrath did not order an attack. The living root remained connected to three larger trees, and none of them had been cleared of residents. He moved the expedition farther onto the abandoned platform while Halden ordered local roads withdrawn.

Two obeyed. A third curled around the platform instead.

Dagar’s officer raised his shield as wooden plates rose from its surface. The plates arranged themselves in overlapping layers around a shape pulling free from the root.

The creature had six limbs but no fixed symmetry. Two ended in broad pads that gripped the bark. Others narrowed into hooked points. Its body resembled a knot of roots forced together around a pale internal frame.

No eyes appeared anywhere on it.

The head turned toward the communication token carrying Max’s voice.

"Remove the token from the formation." Veyrath said.

The captain passed it to an Orchard warden, who carried it toward the southern edge of the platform. The creature followed the movement with its entire body.

It knew where the foreign commands originated.

Merrit’s technician activated a disruption device. A low pulse crossed the platform. The creature collapsed as Edrin’s magic lost its hold on the surrounding wood.

The pale frame inside it remained upright.

Jointed sections opened. Hooks drove into the platform, and fresh roots began wrapping around them.

"The device is building another body." the technician said.

Veyrath ordered everyone off the platform.

Halden directed a branch toward the northern tree. Nothing moved.

He used an instruction created after the First Challenge.

"Third branch of the northern tree. Lower to the red-marked ledge and lock against the lower rail."

The branch responded at once.

The expedition crossed while the creature tore material from the abandoned platform. Dagar’s soldiers wanted to hold the narrow route. Veyrath refused. Their objective was investigation and recovery, not defending a structure Edrin had already abandoned.

The choice prevented the creature from fixing them in place.

Once the last warden crossed, Edrin severed the branch behind them. The creature reached the gap too late. It extended a limb several feet beyond the broken platform, failed to reach the far side, and withdrew.

It did not leap into the ravine or waste material on an impossible crossing.

The living weapon understood limits.

It also understood their objective. The creature had placed itself between the expedition and the missing wardens without attacking until the terrain offered a favorable position. Nothing about the behavior resembled a damaged tree reacting blindly.

Veyrath reported the conclusion rather than allowing Max to infer it from scattered observations.

"We are facing a constructed opponent with tactical judgment." he said. "The Orchard supplies its body, but the decisions come from somewhere else."

"Can the body leave the altered region?" Max asked.

"Unknown. It chose not to follow us. The choice may indicate a territorial limit, protection of another objective, or an attempt to make us believe it cannot pursue."

The captain proposed testing the boundary with an unmanned pack placed on a withdrawing branch. Veyrath rejected the test. The pack would teach the creature how the expedition tried to measure it while proving little about what it might do under different conditions.

They would not feed it information merely to satisfy curiosity.

Max watched reports accumulate in the core room. He wanted more direct information, but asking the field team to describe every movement would distract them. He allowed Veyrath to control the immediate response.

Anna stood at the gate controls. Quin compared each command used by Halden with the Orchard’s prechallenge records.

"The creature is not the object from the case." Quin said.

"The frame could have been folded inside it." Anna replied.

"The clasp came from a case large enough to hold the frame, but the frame is using new plant material. The attacker left a device. The device created the creature later."

Max reached the same conclusion.

A living invader had not survived the challenge. An object remained after the hostile entrance closed, exactly as damaged walls and abandoned equipment had remained. The object waited until searches ended, then used the Last Orchard’s own terrain to make something alive enough to avoid rules that might have exposed an active construct.

"Ask Merrit’s people whether the disruption killed the plant material." Max said.

The answer returned after the expedition reached stable ground.

The pulse had briefly interrupted the Orchard’s magic. It had not killed the roots. The creature’s pale frame retained enough stored power to rebuild its connection.

"Then the frame is probably not the original object." Quin said. "A device capable of producing one frame could produce another."

Edrin joined the channel directly.

"The missing wardens are still beyond the creature."

"Veyrath is finding another route." Max replied.

"The northern road reaches the same region."

"The influence knows the old northern road."

"Every hour reduces their supplies."

"Sending the expedition down a route the weapon expects will not recover them faster."

Edrin’s frustration sharpened. "You are not standing here while your residents remain missing."

"No. My people are standing there because you asked for help. Allow their commander to choose how they move."

Max disliked answering pressure with authority. Edrin needed a boundary more than reassurance. Veyrath had not stopped working. He had only refused the most obvious path.

Halden provided an alternative. A water channel beneath the roots had been expanded after the challenge. It ended near a storage chamber used by western wardens. The living weapon might know the original channel, but the newer section did not exist when the siege seed began gathering information.

The route required leaving most heavy equipment behind.

Merrit’s senior technician selected one detection frame, a disruption device, and sealed cutting tools. Dagar’s officer left two soldiers to guard the abandoned supplies. Veyrath divided no one else.

The channel contained ankle-deep water when they entered. Its walls flexed with the slow movement of surrounding roots. Small openings admitted green light from pools above.

The expedition advanced without using old commands. Halden described every necessary change in new language and included details that had never belonged to an earlier instruction.

The terrain obeyed.

Halfway through the passage, they found a warden’s supply pack floating against the wall.

The scout discovered scratches above the waterline. Three parallel marks repeated every few feet until they reached a sealed root door.

Halden recognized the signal.

"Living survivors. Unable to open route."

He issued a new command. The door separated.

The three missing wardens waited inside the storage chamber. They were hungry, exhausted, and armed with broken pruning tools. None had suffered a mortal injury.

Their account explained how the weapon gathered current information.

The senior missing warden described the first false order. It used Halden’s voice and the exact emergency phrase assigned to western patrols. The phrase required wardens to follow the nearest marked route without waiting for confirmation.

"We obeyed because the order existed for situations where communication failed." she said. "The route carried the right marks. The storage chamber contained supplies. Every detail supported the instruction until the door closed."

"Did the false voice make a mistake?" Quin asked.

"It called the chamber by its former number. We noticed after we were trapped."

The wardens had tried three escape methods. Cutting the wall caused nearby roots to tighten. Sending a signal through the water channel brought a reply in another warden’s voice. Remaining silent eventually caused the questioning roots to withdraw, but they returned whenever the prisoners discussed a plan.

They survived by passing written notes and making meaningless conversation aloud. One warden spent hours describing an imaginary harvest dispute while the others opened the water channel a fraction at a time.

The siege seed had learned words from them. It had not learned the plan carried out in silence.

Quin added the discovery to the operational record. The weapon could observe sound and commands through its filaments, but no evidence showed it reading thoughts or written language through solid wood.

The false road had not killed them. It guided them into the storage chamber and sealed the exits. Afterward, thin roots grew through the walls and repeated questions in familiar voices.

Where were foreign reinforcements expected to arrive?

Which commands had Edrin changed since the challenge?

Which roads led toward the core?

The wardens refused to answer. The roots repeated statements they made to one another and tested combinations of their words as commands.

"It kept us alive to listen." one warden said.

Merrit’s technician examined the sealed door. A pale filament ran beneath the inner bark, but no jointed frame waited inside it. The creature used the terrain as a network extending beyond its body.

"Destroy the strand." Edrin ordered.

The technician stopped before opening his tools.

"The strand may lead toward the source."

"It may also continue listening."

Veyrath chose the immediate safety of the wardens. The technician cut the filament and sealed both ends inside metal clamps. The plant tissue between them died within seconds.

The pale material inside remained warm.

It was not part of the Orchard.

The technician sealed the sample inside two nested containers. The outer box recorded movement and temperature. The inner clamp prevented the pale filament from touching wood, cloth, or leather.

"Can it grow without Orchard material?" Veyrath asked.

"The sample has not tried."

"Treat absence of movement as concealment."

The technician replaced the box inside a metal carrying frame. One Redoubt soldier received the sole duty of watching it. He would surrender the frame rather than open it if the contents changed.

The caution slowed their withdrawal, but no one argued for convenience after seeing a platform build itself around a foreign skeleton.

The rescued wardens remained capable of walking, but Veyrath did not question them during the return. The combat healer divided food and water into small portions and checked each one for injuries concealed beneath work clothing. Their survival did not make six days of confinement harmless.

Halden assigned other wardens to carry their packs. None of the rescued group objected when he relieved them of duty.

The expedition withdrew through the new channel before the weapon found another route. All three wardens crossed into the receiving settlement alive.

Edrin thanked Veyrath, but relief did not end the argument. He wanted the rescue group to return immediately and destroy the creature near the watch platform.

Merrit’s technician refused.

"The body can be rebuilt. We need the object producing the internal frames."

"The creature controls more territory every hour."

"Then destroying one body wastes time and teaches it how we fight."

Dagar supported the technician. A visible enemy could draw defenders away from the actual siege device.

Max asked Halden where the attacker had opened the metal case.
