Dungeon Master (Karma System)
Chapter 288: Cut at the Root
The expedition withdrew upward while the living weapon destroyed the chambers below.
First Root continued repairing each opening with fresh wood. The work did not protect its former homes. New growth filled doorways, covered stairs, and divided rooms into shapes no resident could use.
The siege seed was consuming the tree’s ability to heal.
Halden requested a retreat route. Edrin lowered two branches toward the settlement. The first responded slowly. The second bent away before reaching them.
The weapon had learned enough to interfere with new commands once it observed the intended movement.
Veyrath divided the expedition between the branches. Dagar’s soldiers crossed first and established a defensive position on the upper road. Merrit’s technicians carried the detection frame and captured joint between them. The Orchard wardens followed.
The elite team crossed last.
The large weapon reached the canopy as the captain stepped onto the second branch. It tore a support beam from an abandoned house and drove the sharpened end toward him.
The defensive specialist caught the blow on a reinforced shield. The branch dropped several feet under their combined weight.
Veyrath ordered the captain to continue.
The captain moved instead of turning the exchange into a fight. The specialist withdrew behind him. Ranged attacks broke the weapon’s grip on the beam without attempting to destroy its replaceable body.
Edrin severed both branches after the final soldier reached the upper road.
The expedition escaped First Root with no deaths. Two Redoubt soldiers had damaged shields. One Orchard warden suffered a broken arm when the floor collapsed. Sanctuary’s combat healer stabilized the injury but possessed no authority capable of restoring the bone immediately.
The warden would need ordinary treatment and time.
"The seed is moving toward the central root." Merrit’s technician reported. "Once it reaches the lower junction, it can enter any western supply channel."
"How long?" Max asked.
"An hour if the movement continues at the same rate. Less if it abandons the large body and redirects its material."
The operation no longer had time for another attempt at careful removal, it was time for action.
Edrin knew it.
"I can close the western supply channels." he said.
"Can you close them without separating First Root?" Dagar asked.
"Temporarily."
"The weapon reopened routes you closed before."
"Then I will close them again."
Max heard what Edrin was avoiding.
"How many people must defend the channels while the expedition makes another attempt?"
Halden answered.
"Every available western warden. We would need to evacuate two more settlements in case the weapon breaks through."
"And if the next attempt fails?" Max asked.
Edrin did not answer.
The original tree mattered to him. Max refused to reduce the attachment to sentimentality. First Root represented the beginning of Edrin’s dungeon, the foundation from which every later grove had grown, and a home he expected residents to reclaim.
Preserving it was a legitimate goal.
Preserving it at any cost was not.
"Merrit." Max said. "Can your technicians remove the seed without severing the central root?"
Merrit consulted the field report before answering.
"Not before it reaches the junction. A longer operation might succeed if they immobilize the tree and expose the entire wound."
"Would your people remain inside First Root during the attempt?"
Merrit understood the question.
"I would not order them to."
"Would you ask them to volunteer?" Edrin said.
"No. The available evidence does not justify the risk."
The answer removed the last plausible argument for preservation. Merrit valued the siege seed’s design more than anyone else involved. Even he would not risk his technicians on another attempt.
Dagar recommended immediate separation.
Max did not add his own command.
"Edrin must decide." he said.
"The weapon could threaten our people before he finishes mourning a tree." Dagar replied.
"Then withdraw your soldiers."
"Retreat leaves the seed inside a route toward his core."
"The Concord did not give us authority to save the Last Orchard against its Dungeon Master’s orders."
Edrin had demanded the same principle when Dagar wanted control of the receiving village. The limit now protected his right to make a decision no one else wanted delayed.
He asked Halden how many residents remained dependent on the western supply channels.
The chief warden gave him exact numbers. He did not soften them or mention First Root’s history.
Edrin ordered the separation.
Before beginning, he authorized Halden to tell the western settlements what the command would destroy. The chief warden did not describe the loss as temporary damage. First Root would die, its empty settlement would fall, and several roads tied to the Orchard’s earliest years would never reopen.
Residents received less than twenty minutes to respond. No vote could safely govern a military operation already underway, but Edrin allowed their messages to reach him.
Some asked him to wait. A family whose grandparents had lived inside First Root offered to enter the tree and help remove the device. Halden refused to send untrained residents into the corrupted district.
Others demanded immediate separation. The missing wardens had already survived one delay. Parents in the producing groves did not want another attempt made for the sake of an empty settlement.
One message contained no recommendation. An elderly resident sent the location of a small carving hidden in First Root and asked whether someone could recover it if the opportunity appeared.
No safe opportunity existed.
Edrin heard every response and did not use the disagreement as a reason to postpone the choice.
The command required more than a sentence. First Root connected to the Orchard through forty-three major roots and hundreds of smaller channels. Edrin closed the routes in a deliberate sequence so the producing groves could retain stored energy. Wardens confirmed every evacuation. Waterways emptied before their walls tightened.
The tree resisted as the siege seed recognized what was happening.
Old roads opened throughout the western district. False evacuation orders appeared on inhabited branches. Small living weapons emerged from roots the expedition had already cleared.
Edrin ignored every copied command.
Halden directed wardens using new language. Dagar’s soldiers defended the nearest producing grove. Sanctuary’s elite team returned to the basin above First Root. Merrit’s technicians positioned disruption devices along the three largest roots.
Max coordinated reports from Sanctuary.
He could not see the battlefield, but he could prevent information from overwhelming Edrin. Anna handled gate security and the possible return of injured personnel. Quin separated genuine orders from copied ones and maintained a list of routes confirmed closed. Max decided which requests required Edrin and assigned the rest to commanders already responsible for them.
The tiered system Sanctuary used for ordinary requests now served a foreign dungeon during an attack. Edrin received only decisions no one else could make.
"Northern settlement requests permission to cut a minor bridge." Quin said.
"Halden’s authority covers local isolation." Max replied. "Send it to him."
"Merrit’s technicians need the timing of the third major root."
"Edrin."
"Dagar’s officer requests additional defenders."
"Veyrath decides whether Sanctuary can provide them. Do not interrupt Edrin."
The structure preserved his attention for the separation.
Thirty-nine major roots closed.
The fortieth reopened and formed a mouth around the wardens cutting it. Dagar’s soldiers broke the wooden teeth while the wardens withdrew. Edrin killed the entire root rather than attempting to reclaim it.
The forty-first carried one of the seed’s pale filaments. Merrit’s disruption device exposed the strand long enough for the elite scout to clamp and sever it.
The forty-second closed without resistance.
The final root was the oldest connection in the dungeon.
It ran beneath First Root toward the core territory. The passage no longer reached the core, but the siege seed had spent days trying to reopen it.
Edrin gave the command.
First Root refused.
He repeated the order with greater force. Bark split along the western district. Leaves fell from every remaining branch. The root tightened but did not die.
The seed had anchored itself inside the connection.
"The final root must be cut physically." Edrin said.
Veyrath led the expedition into the basin.
Without its other connections, First Root could no longer rebuild without limit. The large living weapon descended from the canopy and placed itself over the final root. Smaller bodies gathered around its legs.
Dagar’s soldiers held the first charge. Orchard wardens attacked the root rather than the creatures. Merrit’s technicians used controlled pulses to strip foreign frames of living armor.
The elite team moved according to Veyrath’s commands. Defensive specialists held the large body away from the wardens. The ranged fighter broke exposed joints. The scout marked the pale lines carrying material back toward the seed. No one pursued a retreating body beyond the assigned position.
The weapon adapted. It stopped striking shields and attacked the ground beneath them. Roots rose to divide the formation.
Veyrath withdrew the front rank before the barrier closed. Dagar’s officer obeyed without demanding an explanation. The delayed trap caught no one.
Merrit’s senior technician reached the final root and drove a disruption device into the exposed wood.
The seed’s connection became visible.
Halden’s wardens cut along the pale line. The living weapon abandoned its large body and pulled the frame toward the root. Sanctuary’s captain pinned it with a weighted spear before it could enter.
The spear had no guard to catch against the joints. The captain used the shaft and his full weight to hold the frame flat while the defensive specialists secured it.
The wardens severed the root.
First Root separated from the Last Orchard.
Every living weapon collapsed.
The wood composing their bodies remained alive for several seconds, moved without direction, and then became ordinary broken branches and roots. The pale frames continued struggling until Merrit’s technicians disabled them.
Inside First Root, the siege seed exhausted its stored energy trying to establish a connection that no longer existed.
Edrin ordered the dead island surrounding the tree burned.
The fire consumed the abandoned settlement, the corrupted roots, and the siege seed. Merrit’s technicians recorded the destruction from a safe distance. They requested no delay to preserve the object.
First Root fell near sunset.
Residents felt the impact through the remaining western roads. Several gathered at the nearest safe overlooks. No one tried to enter the burned basin.
Halden recorded the names of the former settlement’s households and every item residents reported lost. The list could not restore the tree. It prevented the destruction from reducing decades of life to a tactical entry reading objective completed.
Edrin ordered cuttings from First Root’s descendant groves preserved. None would be named as a replacement. A new tree could continue the Orchard’s growth without pretending the first one had survived.
The distinction mattered to the people who remembered it.
Edrin remained connected until the trunk struck the empty basin.
Then he closed his private channel and said nothing for the rest of the night.
