Chapter 390: Chapter 390
This guy was an absolute freak!
Worse, he was a bloodthirsty psycho who actually relished violence—otherwise, he wouldn’t be wearing that expression.
Nate suddenly regretted provoking Mark.
No—this entire mission was completely out of mind!
But it was far too late for regrets.
At this point, Nate had been beaten to a pulp, left without an ounce of strength to fight back. Mark gestured toward Suzy, signaling her to come over.
"Coming," Suzy answered, quickening her pace as she approached.
Mark glanced at Suzy as she neared, then looked back down at Nate, who was sprawled out like a dead dog. After a moment’s thought, he decided it was better to err on the side of caution.
He had to prevent Nate from pulling any dirty tricks.
"Don’t come over just yet," Mark called out to Suzy.
Not far off, Suzy was somewhat puzzled by his words, but she halted her steps nonetheless.
Once he was sure Suzy was holding her distance, Mark let go of Nate, tossing him onto the ground like garbage.
Just as Nate thought Mark was going to let him off, Mark squatted back down and seized his wrists.
Under Nate’s bewildered and terrified gaze, Mark expressionlessly twisted and snapped his wrists.
Left wrist. Right wrist.
"AAAARGH!" Piercing, agonizing screams burst from Nate’s mouth, his shrieks echoing across the open space.
Watching him writhe in agony, Mark remained entirely unfazed—no sympathy, no regret.
"You... it’s you..." At long last, a realization clicked inside Nate’s mind.
When all the fragments of information in his brain converged on this single point, he finally understood.
Mark didn’t bother replying. Yet this cold indifference only infuriated Nate further.
"You... you are clearly one of us! Why are you helping her?! Have you lost your damn mind?!" Nate demanded through gritted teeth in sheer agony.
It finally hit Nate: this guy, Mark, was a Descendant too!
That’s right—he was a Descendant!
And not just any Descendant, but the most infamous and dangerous monster among their entire group.
Mark was a total psycho!
"You tried to kill me, and I’m not allowed to kill you?" Mark’s icy gaze swept back and forth over Nate.
Where was there any trace of the harmless, gentle youth he usually portrayed in front of Suzy?
Nate trembled all over. "If you had just told me sooner... that you were a Descendant too... how could I have possibly tried to kill you?!"
Mark smirked. "It doesn’t matter anymore. The fact remains that you tried to take my life."
Nate was rendered speechless.
How... how on earth did I manage to mess with this psycho?
He had heard rumors before that Mark had killed plenty of fellow Descendants—anyone who crossed him never made it out alive.
Many had warned him to be careful, but Nate had never seen what Mark looked like, so how was he supposed to know who to look out for?
All he knew was that Mark had a signature habit before dealing with someone: breaking both of their wrists just to be safe.
Now that he was experiencing it firsthand, Nate finally realized he had provoked someone he never should have touched.
He... he didn’t want to die yet.
Enduring the throbbing pain, Nate opened his mouth, trying desperately to explain: "I didn’t mean to... I—I only misunderstood because I saw you following her..."
Gradually, Nate’s voice trailed off.
Wait—why was Mark following Suzy?
More importantly, he had been by her side all this time, yet Suzy was completely fine!
Why hadn’t he killed her?
Not only that, but Mark had actually been protecting her during the firefight earlier!
What in the world is this guy playing at?!
"Are you insane?!" Nate suddenly yelled out.
Mark gave him a look of mild confusion, failing to understand why he was shouting so hysterically.
Nate’s face contorted. "Has that woman bewitched you?! Your mission is to kill her, not protect her! You know damn well what happens if you fail your mission! Have you gone completely mad?!"
Mark’s eyes flickered slightly. "What does that have to do with you?"
Nate kept trying to talk sense into him. "If the mission isn’t completed, you’ll die too!"
Mark remained utterly unmoved.
Seeing his continued indifference, Nate couldn’t make sense of it no matter how hard he tried.
He truly didn’t understand.
The sole reason they had descended into this world was to kill Suzy and complete their mission.
If Suzy didn’t die, they would be the ones to perish.
What was wrong with Mark? Was he throwing away his own life?!
He was a Descendant himself, for heaven’s sake!
Suddenly, a wild thought flashed through Nate’s mind—the only logical explanation that could possibly justify Mark’s actions.
Nate gasped in utter disbelief, "Don’t tell me... you’ve actually fallen in love with her?! Are you out of your mind?!"
Hearing those words, Mark visibly froze, after which his expression darkened completely.
"Shut your mouth. What nonsense are you spouting?" Mark’s voice dripped with pure, venomous cold.
"Then why aren’t you killing her?! Speak up! Why don’t you kill her?!" Nate pressed, his tone overflowing with relentless accusation.
Mark let out a cold laugh. "I don’t owe you an explanation for anything I do."
With that, Mark lost all patience to continue wasting words on him. He signaled to Suzy: Shoot!
Receiving his cue, Suzy pulled the trigger decisively.
Nate was already powerless to resist, lying collapsed on the ground like a broken puppet.
Suzy’s bullet tore through the air, piercing straight through Nate’s skull.
Nate’s eyes bulged wide as he choked out one final, fragmented line: "There... will never be a future... for the two of you!"
With those final words, Nate fell completely still.
Mark looked down at his corpse with total detachment, muttering softly, "None of your business."
Nate was dead.
Suzy quickly walked over. "It’s done."
Mark nodded. "Yeah. Let’s go."
Suzy cast one last glance at Nate’s corpse, feeling a strange, indescribable sensation in her chest.
She turned around. "Let’s head back."
The two walked back to the RV parked not far away, one behind the other.
After getting in, Suzy took the wheel and drove the RV farther into the distance. Silence hung between them along the way as Mark quietly cleaned the blood off his body.
Until he noticed a streak of blood along his waist.
