Chapter 388: Chapter 388

Those men had grown completely silent.

Yet Nate was not among them.

"He’s not here," Mark’s voice chimed in from beside her.

Suzy didn’t reply immediately, her eyes continuing to scan their surroundings, her fingers locked tight around her firearm.

Then, she heard a voice.

"I’m right here."

The voice drifted over from not far behind them, laced with playful amusement.

Suzy turned around to see Nate standing by the roadside, a smirk resting on the corner of his lips.

"Pretty swift work," Nate noted. His voice wasn’t loud, yet it rang out exceptionally clear across the open road. "You two were a bit faster than I anticipated."

"You hid pretty fast yourself," Suzy said, her eyes narrowing.

Nate paid no mind to the sarcasm in her words, simply shrugging his shoulders.

At that exact moment, a deafening bang shattered the air.

Mark, who had been standing silently by her side, had already pulled the trigger.

The bullet tore through the air, striking Nate square in the left chest.

His body jerked back slightly, as though pushed lightly by an invisible hand.

Then, he lowered his head, staring at the bullet hole on his chest that was oozing blood. Reaching out, he pressed his finger against the damp cloth, not pulling it away immediately.

He raised his head, his facial expression completely unchanged.

"...You hit me," he said. "That was a sneak attack—not very honorable of you."

He removed his hand from the wound, glanced at the bloodstains clinging to his fingertips, and lowered his hand again, acting as though nothing had happened.

No collapsing, no stumbling back, and no sign of experiencing any pain whatsoever—it was as if his body’s feedback loop for pain had been entirely severed.

He took a step forward, his stride steady and balanced.

Seeing this scene unfold, Mark’s and Suzy’s complexions instantly turned pale.

Especially Suzy—she finally realized what was wrong.

Bullets are completely ineffective against this Nate guy.

This scene was far too familiar.

He... is a Descendant!

Nate was the second Descendant. Just like Aaron had been.

Suddenly, everything made sense to Suzy. She finally understood where Nate’s boundless malice had come from, and why he was so stubbornly bent on killing her.

It was simply because he was a Descendant––the world’s means of restoring the order that Suzy had destroyed.

The sole purpose of the Descendants coming into this world was to eliminate her.

For Nate to try and end her life... was entirely to be expected.

Suzy had initially felt baffled and exasperated by his unprovoked hostility, but now she finally saw the truth.

A sudden wave of chill swept over her, soaking into her very bones.

The heavens were determined to oppose her to the bitter end—even without Nate, there would always be others.

Even if she successfully dealt with Nate, more Descendants would inevitably pop up.

It was a never-ending cycle.

Suzy felt a bone-deep exhaustion settle in—her heart grew incredibly weary.

Still, she knew full well that now was not the time to brood over this; the urgent priority was still to eliminate Nate.

Otherwise, her life truly would end right here.

Having cleared her head, Suzy fired two consecutive shots straight at Nate.

Bang! Bang!

The bullets sped toward Nate’s head.

Suzy knew all too well that for Descendants like him, their only real weak point was the head.

Shooting the body was utterly useless.

So this time, Suzy aimed directly for Nate’s head.

However, Nate’s reaction speed was far faster than she had anticipated.

Having already been watching Suzy’s movements, he swiftly sidestepped to dodge the oncoming rounds.

The bullets missed his head, merely grazing his cheek by accident.

Nate tilted his head slightly, remarking toward Suzy, "Going straight for the kill right out of the gate, huh?"

Suzy pressed her lips tightly together, keeping silent.

Nate didn’t care either, yanking out his firearm and unloading on both Suzy and Mark.

"Doesn’t matter anymore. Both of you are dying right here today."

Nate’s marksmanship was shockingly accurate—the bullets almost grazed Suzy, forcing her to duck right back behind cover.

"Are you alright?" Mark asked.

Suzy turned her head to look at him, giving no immediate answer.

Now that she realized Nate was a Descendant, recalling what Nate had previously said to Mark left her feeling an odd uneasiness.

She prayed she was just overthinking things.

She hoped Mark wasn’t... what she was beginning to suspect.

"What’s wrong?" Seeing her remain silent for so long, Mark looked at her with a trace of worry on his face.

"I’m fine," Suzy forced out those three words with difficulty.

Mark shot her a complex glance before lowering his voice, "Stay here and don’t move. I’ll take care of him."

With that, Mark leaned out swiftly and opened fire on Nate in the distance.

Now that his identity was blown, Nate cast aside all remaining reservations, closing in directly on their position.

In the blink of an eye, the distance between both sides narrowed drastically.

By the time Mark fired his shots, the gap had shrunk to within two meters.

Nate completely ignored the bullets Mark fired—dodging what he could and taking what he couldn’t, since ordinary rounds couldn’t inflict any real harm on his physical body anyway.

Firing several shots in a row, Mark only hit Nate’s torso. Just as he went to pull the trigger again, he realized he had run out of ammo.

It was far too late to reload now—Nate was already right in front of him, swinging a heavy fist straight at his face.

Mark tossed aside the empty firearm in his hand and stepped up to meet the blow, a cold, ambiguous smirk curling up the corners of his lips.

"Did you really think you could beat me with your bare hands?" Mark spoke softly, his tone eerie.

Swinging into empty air, Nate wasn’t bothered in the slightest and threw another fist toward him.

He would very soon understand the true meaning behind Mark’s words.
