Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 92: The First Winter
The first snow fell three days later, drifting silently through the gray sky.
Raviah stood beneath the reinforced observation platform overlooking Sol Haven, watching the white flakes coat the iron railings. She remained still, her breath fogging in the bitter air.
Snow was not supposed to arrive yet. Not with this sudden, violent intensity.
Her memories told her the first true winter would arrive months into the collapse, after the atmospheric disturbances had stabilized. Yet the reality unfolding before her eyes defied her past life.
The falling flakes rapidly thickened into a blinding blanket.
Within an hour, the lush agricultural fields were entirely buried in pristine white.
Within three hours, the ambient temperature plummeted far below freezing.
By nightfall, the surface greenhouses were struggling to maintain internal heat.
"Doctor!" a voice called out through the howling wind.
Raviah turned her head sharply toward the sound.
A young worker came running toward her, his breath forming thick white clouds in the freezing air.
"Greenhouse Three is losing temperature rapidly, and the heating system can’t compensate."
"Seal it immediately," Raviah ordered, her voice cutting through the chill. "Move the most vulnerable crops to the underground vaults."
The worker hesitated, wiping frost from his eyelashes.
"All of them?"
"All of them," Raviah confirmed without a second’s delay.
Rhyder appeared from the opposite corridor, wearing a heavy, dark military coat over his uniform.
"How bad is the drop?" he asked, stepping beside her. ℴℴ𝘮
Raviah met his steady gaze.
"Worse than it should be."
Neither of them wasted another second standing in the cold.
Sol Haven transformed overnight into a hive of urgent activity.
Agricultural workers moved through the freezing darkness, carrying seedlings, nutrient containers, irrigation equipment, and emergency lighting. Military personnel reinforced the primary gates against ice build-up while engineers redirected power toward the underground agricultural sectors.
The outer temperature continued its merciless plunge. By dawn, several unprotected fields had frozen solid into sheets of ice.
The outer livestock barns required additional industrial heating units to keep the animals alive. Primary water pipes began cracking under the pressure of expanding ice. Across the horizon, distant cities disappeared beneath heavy snow.
Satellite feeds showed major highways buried under white drifts, abandoned vehicles frozen where they stood, and entire districts entombed in ice.
The apocalypse had officially entered winter, far earlier than Raviah remembered. Inside Sol Haven, however, humanity stubbornly endured. The massive underground agricultural complex came alive with activity.
Artificial sunlight illuminated long, neatly organized rows of thriving crops. Hydroponic channels smoothly circulated warm, nutrient-rich water through the system.
Temperature-controlled chambers safely protected delicate vegetables, medicinal plants, rice seedlings, wheat, and essential crops. The subterranean greenhouses became their new, sheltered world.
Raviah spent nearly every waking hour in the warm glow of the lower bays. She personally checked nutrient concentrations, adjusted growing temperatures, monitored plant responses to altered atmospheric energy, and inspected every batch for abnormal mutations.
Rhyder was almost always nearby, keeping watch over the operations. Sometimes he arrived carrying urgent military reports. Sometimes he brought hot meals from the mess hall. Sometimes he simply stood beside her in comfortable silence while she worked.
"You haven’t eaten," he noted one evening.
Raviah kept her gaze fixed on her tablet screen. "I ate."
"When?" Rhyder pressed, crossing his arms.
She paused, tapping a data entry. "Earlier."
"That wasn’t an answer, Doctor," he replied, a faint smirk touching his lips.
She finally glanced up at him, shaking her head. "You sound like a doctor."
"And you sound like a patient who lies to doctors," he countered smoothly.
Despite the stress weighing on her shoulders, Raviah smiled.
Rhyder placed a warm, insulated container onto the workbench beside her tablet. "Eat."
She opened the lid, letting the aroma fill the air.
Steam rose from a generous serving of hot rice, fresh vegetables, and seasoned meat.
"You cooked this?" she asked, looking up in mild surprise.
"I supervised," Rhyder answered without flinching.
"That means someone else cooked it," she noted.
"Yes," he admitted plainly.
She laughed softly, the sound echoing through the warm greenhouse. It was a strangely ordinary, human moment amidst the chaos.
Outside, an entire civilization was freezing to death under miles of ice. Inside, the two of them were standing together, arguing about dinner.
Days bled into one another as the storm raged above. Their daily routines slowly developed a comfortable rhythm.
Raviah worked in the underground greenhouses during the morning and afternoon. Rhyder inspected defense perimeters, managed security squads, and oversaw refugee sectors. They naturally met during meals to share updates and brief each other.
Sometimes they walked through the agricultural corridors together long after midnight, inspecting irrigation lines and verifying temperature controls.
On more than one occasion, Raviah fell fast asleep over her research tablet. Whenever that happened, she would wake up to discover a military coat gently draped over her shoulders.
Neither of them ever brought it up aloud.
Their relationship had fundamentally changed after their first kiss.
There was no need to constantly analyze or discuss it.
It simply existed, steady and undeniable.
A calloused hand resting gently against the small of her back.
A reassuring glance shared across a crowded, noisy command room.
Rhyder bringing her warm tea without her ever having to ask for it. Raviah left specialized medical supplements beside his reports because she knew he would forget to take them.
They were no longer merely surviving side by side in a broken world. They were actively beginning to build a genuine life together. Even if that life was nestled deep beneath the frozen ruins of the old civilization.
Then, on the seventh night of the endless blizzard, the red alarm blared.
Raviah rushed straight into the main command center, her boots skidding on the floor.
Every single temperature sensor on the primary display map had turned a glaring crimson.
Rhyder was already standing at the head console, his face severe.
"What’s happening?" Raviah demanded, stepping up beside him.
A young technician stared at the incoming telemetry readings in disbelief.
"General..." the tech stammered, his fingers trembling over the keys.
A suffocating silence fell over the command room. The atmospheric numbers on the main monitor continued to drop at an impossible rate.
[EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE: -38°C]
Raviah’s unreadable expression immediately turned sharp and cold.
A temperature drop like that was physically impossible this early in the winter.
Then another systemic warning window flashed bright yellow across the glass screen.
[TEMPERATURE DROP DETECTED]
[RATE OF DECLINE: EXTREME]
The technician’s hands shook uncontrollably as he tried to recalibrate the sensors. "It’s still falling, sir!"
Raviah stared intently at the main display screen.
The digital numbers flickered and updated once more.
[-42°C]
Rhyder reached down and took her hand, his strong grip anchoring her.
The central monitoring system immediately issued a final, blaring warning banner.
[HISTORICAL MINIMUM THRESHOLD APPROACHING]
Raviah’s blood ran ice-cold in her veins as she read the prompt.
The apocalypse was not simply accelerating its timeline. It was actively rewriting the fundamental laws of nature. And then, before anyone could react, the outer temperature plunged into the abyss once again.
[-50°C]
The deafening siren roared through the metal corridors of Sol Haven. Outside the thick fortress walls, endless snow continued to bury the world in silence. And the entire planet froze beneath the dark sky.
