Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 93: The Frozen Horde
The blizzard showed no signs of stopping over the next few days.
For three long days, Sol Haven remained buried beneath an endless, blinding curtain of snow. The surface temperature hovered far below survivable human levels, forcing nearly the entire population into the subterranean sectors.
Only armed military patrols and essential maintenance crews were permitted to venture outside, and even they could remain above ground for only brief, strictly timed intervals. Then, on the fourth night, the harsh blare of perimeter alarms erupted through the command center.
Holographic system alerts flashed a violent red across the primary glass monitors.
[MULTIPLE BIOLOGICAL SIGNATURES DETECTED]
[NORTHERN PERIMETER]
[HOSTILE COUNT: ESCALATING]
Raviah looked up sharply from her medical terminal, her fingers freezing over the touch interface.
"What is that?" she asked, her voice tight with rising tension.
Before anyone could answer, a heavy vibration shuddered through the floor as something massive struck the outer blast wall.
Rhyder was already moving toward the central console, his military coat snapping around his boots.
"Show me the northern cameras," he commanded, his eyes fixed on the blank screens.
The main display flickered wildly with static before stabilizing.
For several tense seconds, nothing appeared on the feed except swirling, chaotic white snow. Then, dozens of dark, hulking figures emerged from the blinding heart of the white storm.
Dozens rapidly multiplied into hundreds. Within moments, the thermal sensors confirmed thousands of incoming hostiles.
Raviah’s blood ran cold as she stepped closer to the primary monitor.
"Zombies," she whispered, her chest tightening.
But as the camera zoomed in, she realized these were not the slow, decaying corpses she remembered from her past life.
These creatures moved unnaturally fast despite wading through waist-deep snow drifts. Their bodies were partially frozen, their blue-tinted skin hardened into armor beneath thick layers of translucent ice.
Some had frost-covered limbs twisted into grotesque, unnatural angles, while others bore jagged crystalline growths protruding from their backs, shoulders, and skulls.
Suddenly, a massive creature at the front of the horde raised its frostbitten hand toward the sky. A concentrated burst of pure frozen energy erupted from its palm, blasting across the snow and detonating against the outer barrier.
A heavy, stunned silence fell over the entire command room.
Raviah stared at the shattered camera feed in utter disbelief.
"Some of them have awakened Elemental abilities," she breathed, her mind racing through the terrifying implications.
Rhyder’s expression hardened into carved stone as he turned toward the communications officer.
"Sound the fortress alarm," he ordered, his voice echoing with absolute authority.
The warning sirens blared through every hallway, turning the underground complex into a hive of defensive activity.
[EXTREME BIOLOGICAL THREAT]
[FROZEN HORDE APPROACHING]
[ALL DEFENSIVE UNITS: DEPLOY]
Rhyder strode directly toward the command elevator, turning to address his senior officers.
"Lock down all civilian sectors immediately and keep everyone safely underground," he instructed firmly.
He paused at the elevator threshold, sweeping a sharp gaze across his military commanders.
"Elemental squads take the northern wall," he commanded, gesturing to the map. "Fire and Thunder units lead the assault while Earth units reinforce the outer barriers. Air units will track creature movement through the storm."
"Yes, General!" the officers barked in unison, scattering to execute their orders.
Raviah grabbed her emergency medical kit from the workstation shelf.
"I’m going too," she said, stepping up alongside him.
Rhyder immediately stopped in his tracks, looking down at her with a stern, unyielding gaze.
"No," he said flatly.
"I’m the only person here who can stabilize wounded Elementals fast enough to return them to combat," she argued, meeting his eyes without flinching.
His jaw tightened, a vein pulsing near his temple.
"This isn’t a normal battlefield, Raviah."
"Neither is anything in this world anymore," she countered smoothly.
For a long, silent moment, they simply stared at each other, neither willing to yield an inch.
Finally, Rhyder let out a heavy sigh, his stern expression softening just a fraction.
"Stay behind the defensive line," he conceded.
Raviah smiled faintly, adjusting the strap of her bag.
"That sounds suspiciously like an order, General."
"It is an order," he replied, his eyes dark with protective intent.
"I’ll consider it," she said, stepping into the elevator lift.
The corner of his mouth twitched, almost forming a smile.
Then, an explosion rocked the foundation of the fortress, shattering the brief moment.
They split up as soon as the doors slid open.
Rhyder reached the upper walkway of the northern wall just as the frozen horde crashed violently against the reinforced iron defenses.
"Fire!" he roared, drawing his weapon.
Dozens of trained Elementals unleashed their activated Roots all at once. Torrents of roaring flames erupted across the snowfields, illuminating the dark storm. Arcs of blinding lightning tore through the blizzard, shattering icy corpses into fragments.
Blades of compressed air blasted entire vanguard groups of zombies backward down the slope. Yet the mutated frozen creatures adapted with terrifying speed.
Their dense, icy bodies absorbed a significant portion of the fiery blasts. Several armless zombies continued advancing up the ramparts, ignoring fatal wounds entirely. One creature leaped over the parapet, landing heavily onto the stone walkway.
A nearby soldier struck it directly in the chest with a concentrated Thunder Root attack. The zombie’s body convulsed violently under the electrical current, but instead of disintegrating, it released a massive electrical surge of its own.
The high-voltage shockwave blasted the soldier backward into the metal railing.
"Medic!" an officer yelled over the roar of the blizzard.
Raviah rushed forward through the snow and smoke, dropping to her knees beside the fallen soldier.
She pressed both hands flat against his chest, her Healing Root flaring into life beneath her palms. Her energy immediately entered his damaged, erratic energy pathways, diagnosing the internal damage in seconds.
His internal Core was rapidly destabilizing from the elemental feedback.
"Don’t fight my energy," she instructed calmly, keeping her voice steady amidst the chaos. "Let me guide it back into alignment."
Soothing, golden healing energy flowed smoothly from her hands and into his body.
Under her precise biological manipulation, his unstable Root gradually settled back into a harmonious rhythm.
A notification flashed briefly across her inner vision.
[ELEMENTAL CORE STABILITY: RESTORED]
The soldier gasped, opening his eyes as the excruciating pain vanished.
"I can still fight, ma’am," he grunted, trying to push himself up.
Raviah placed a firm hand on his shoulder, keeping him grounded.
"Not yet," she said softly but firmly. "Rest for two minutes."
Behind them, another explosion shook the entire northern wall.
Rhyder was fighting personally at the absolute front line, a force of nature in his own right.
His razor-sharp elemental energy tore clean through frozen bodies as he moved fluidly from one breach point to another. He coordinated squad movements with sharp commands, adamantly refusing to give up a single inch of ground.
Despite their ferocious defense, the horde kept coming in endless waves. A massive frozen zombie smashed through a weakened section of the northern barricade.
Rhyder intercepted the beast instantly, raising a defensive barrier.
The creature’s icy fist collided with the barrier with sickening force. A loud crack echoed through the air as his elemental shield fractured under the impact.
The zombie opened its jagged, frost-covered jaw wide. Instead of letting out a mindless, primal roar, its throat worked strangely.
"Rhyder..." it rasped.
Rhyder froze in place, his eyes widening in complete shock.
The creature’s glazed eyes stared directly into his own. Its voice was distinctly human, carrying a horrifying clarity. It sounded genuinely terrified, trapped inside its own decaying flesh. And then, the frozen corpse whispered a desperate plea.
"Help me..."
