Chapter 803: Chapter 791: Little Crime-Solving Detective (21)
Archie Lockwood carried Eleanor Bishop to the sofa and tossed her directly onto it, not caring in the slightest if the fall would hurt her.
Eleanor landed heavily on the cushions. Her heart leaped into her throat as she looked up at him uneasily.
"Eleanor Bishop, you’d better give me a clear explanation." He wondered if all her talk about being ill-fated and having incompatible star signs meant she simply wanted to leave him.
Suppressing her fear, Eleanor let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh. "There’s nothing to explain. You already know everything there is to know. What else is there to say?"
"Eleanor! Don’t you forget how the two of us started!" It was her who had schemed against him and seduced him first.
And now she wanted to leave? From the very beginning, she had been the one pulling the strings between them. What gave her the right to start things whenever she pleased and leave whenever she wanted? As far as he was concerned, he wouldn’t allow it. Absolutely not!
"I haven’t forgotten. And because of that, haven’t I already been punished? Archie, why must you keep clinging to me?" She had lost her daughter and the use of her legs. Was that punishment still not enough? Hadn’t God punished her enough already?
She knew she had made a mistake by provoking Archie Lockwood in this life. She truly knew she was wrong...
"I’m clinging to you? Heh, Eleanor Bishop, you really are an ungrateful wretch. Even if I raised a dog, it would know how to show more gratitude than you." When he was useful to her, she used him. And when he was no longer of use, she wanted to stay as far away from him as possible. Why was he still clinging to a woman like that?
At the thought of this, Archie suddenly laughed. He really was a massive failure!
Seeing his sudden laughter, Eleanor’s heart filled with even more dread. She didn’t care how Archie treated her, but she was terrified of dragging her father down with her.
Archie’s dark gaze locked onto Eleanor. His thin lips parted slightly. "Eleanor, I only have one question for you."
"What is it?"
"When you agreed to marry me today, were you being sincere, or were you faking it?"
Hearing his words, Eleanor gave a faint, bitter smile. "I’ve already told you. With a man as powerful and wealthy as you, I’d have to be stupid or crazy to refuse your proposal."
"Heh, good. Very good. It seems you truly don’t love me anymore. You really do want to leave me." The Eleanor of the past had never been like this. Archie spoke in a self-deprecating tone. He raised a hand and pinched her chin, carefully scrutinizing her features to see what exactly gave this woman the right to treat him this way.
"Love? We’re not getting any younger. Isn’t it a bit hypocritical to still be talking about love at our age?" Didn’t he hate it most when she pretended? Then there was no need for her to put on an act anymore.
Her words caused his grip on her chin to tighten significantly. His eyes were icy, and his voice dripped with undisguised disgust. "Hypocritical? Heh, Eleanor, this is what you really think, isn’t it! Have you never loved me at all?!" Not in the past, and not now.
Her heart constricted fiercely, but she stubbornly maintained her smile. "I did love once. It’s just that the man I loved is already dead."
"Dead?" Archie’s eyes darkened as he forced the word out through gritted teeth.
"Yes, dead. The man I loved was named Archie Summers. Even though he knew I was using him and scheming against him, he would never ruthlessly trample all my pride underfoot."
