Chapter 57 Intoxication
Chapter 57: Chapter 57 Intoxication
Ring! Ring! Ring!
Lars’s alarm rang loudly. He was currently sleeping like a log in his room. He slowly woke up before looking at the time. It was already 7:00 a.m.
His eyes immediately widened, and all traces of sleep vanished as he remembered that the bidding for his Class Books would end in just two hours.
"Should I check the current bidding prices or not? Hmm...I think I will leave it as a surprise for a little while longer."
Lars washed up before having some breakfast. He then locked his room and walked into the hallway.
Suddenly, Lars noticed that Celine’s room door was open. He took a quick glance inside.
"Hey, Celine! Are you alright? I haven’t seen you for the past few days," Lars called out.
There was no response. A sense of unease immediately crept into his heart. He then stepped inside. The room was a complete mess, and an unpleasant smell lingered in the air.
He looked around the main area, but Celine was nowhere to be seen. Stepping past piles of trash, he made his way toward the kitchen. Suddenly, he stumbled over something and fell to the ground.
"Ouch! What did I step on?"
He looked down at his feet and his eyes widened in shock. Celine was lying unconscious on the floor, with foam forming around her mouth.
"Hey! Celine! Are you alright? Hey!" Lars immediately shook her body, but there was no response.
"Oh no! I need to get her to the hospital!"
At that moment, Max called him.
(Hey, Lars! Aren’t you ready yet? I’m already in front of your building.)
"Max! Perfect timing! There’s an emergency!"
(Huh?)
A few moments later, Max sped toward the hospital as fast as he could, weaving through traffic. From time to time, he glanced at the rearview mirror at the unconscious girl lying in the back.
"Who’s that chick, Lars? Your girlfriend?" Max asked.
"No. She’s my next-door neighbor," Lars replied as he sat in the back seat while supporting Celine’s head on his lap.
Soon, they arrived at the Emergency Department. The medical staff immediately rushed Celine into the Red Zone and began resuscitating her.
A few hours passed, yet there was still no news from the medical team. Lars sat quietly on one of the chairs when Max suddenly handed him a can of coffee.
"Thanks." Lars opened the can and took a sip.
"Can I ask you something, Lars?" Max said as he sat down beside him. "Who is this girl, actually? Why do you look so worried about her? Is there something going on between the two of you?"
Lars took another sip of his coffee before quietly staring at the can in his hand.
"Like I told you, we’re just neighbors. However, that girl is someone who has fallen into the abyss."
"I don’t know why, but even though everyone keeps telling me to ignore her, and that I’m an idiot for always buying her food, I just can’t do it. To me, she is too similar to what happened to Madison."
Max’s eyes widened the moment he heard the name Madison.
"So, you’re trapped by that feeling too, huh? The feeling that, no matter what happens, you should help people as much as you can, and try to make them happy."
Lars nodded. Both of them felt that the feeling was like a curse brought upon them because of a mistake they had made in the past. Just then, a doctor walked toward them.
"Are either of you relatives of Celine?"
"No. We’re just...her friends. How is her condition, Doctor?" Lars asked.
"So far, she’s stable. Fortunately, you brought her here as quickly as you did."
"However, we’ve found a very high concentration of drugs in her body, which is disrupting her normal bodily functions. If we don’t remove those drugs soon, they could permanently damage her brain, liver, and kidneys," the doctor explained.
"Is there anything you can do to remove the drugs?" Max asked.
"There is an antidote available. But it’s very expensive. That’s why I wanted to ask whether any of her relatives would be able to afford it," the doctor replied.
"How much is it, Doctor?" Lars asked.
At that moment, he had around 300,000 Zents in savings. Including the money from the ongoing auction, he was confident he would soon have well over 1 million Zents.
"She will need a seven-day course of the medication, with one dose administered each day. Each dose costs 100,000 Zents."
"100,000 Zents?!" Max exclaimed in disbelief. "You mean the full course will cost 700,000 Zents? What kind of medicine is that expensive? You’re not trying to scam us, are you?"
The doctor raised his hands.
"The medication is actually a prototype drug that was only released this year in Europe, specifically to treat this type of intoxication. Actually, this isn’t the first time we’ve received a patient in this condition."
"Over the past few months, we’ve treated several similar cases. And fortunately, most of them made a full recovery after completing this course of medication."
Lars thought for a moment before looking at the doctor.
"Can I pay for the first three doses first? I will pay for the remaining four doses later," Lars said.
"Certainly. That’s no problem. The sooner she receives the antidote, the better her prognosis will be. Please follow me," the doctor replied before walking away.
"Hey, Lars! What are you doing? Are you really going to spend all your money on her? You should think about yourself too."
"It’s alright, Max. Besides, I will be getting more money once the bidding ends today. Don’t worry." Lars smiled before following the doctor to make the payment.
After everything was settled, Lars and Max returned to Max’s car. Since Celine had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, she was not allowed to receive any visitors.
The moment Lars got into the car, he immediately took out his phone to check the final results of the bidding. However, his eyes suddenly widened in shock.
"Are you kidding me?!"
"What? What happened?" Max asked before leaning over to look at Lars’s phone. The next moment, he froze as well. A notification was displayed on the screen.
