Chapter 40: Chapter 40 Teamwork

Right now, Lars, Ryuken, and Justin were sandwiched between two monsters.

The giant crocodile was charging straight at them, while Vega and Lucien were leading a giant rhinoceros monster directly toward their position.

"Which monster are we supposed to attack?!" Lars shouted as he alternated his gaze between the monsters on his right and left. Justin, meanwhile, remained behind Lars.

"Ryuken?" Vega called out as he spotted his teammate standing together with the other two hunters.

Ryuken suddenly nodded at him. Years of fighting side by side had given them perfect teamwork. They understood each other without needing a single word.

"Lars, we’re taking the rhino! Let’s go!" Ryuken immediately charged toward the giant rhinoceros.

Lars didn’t ask any questions and rushed after him. Justin quickly ran behind a pile of rubble to hide.

"Lucien, we will take the other one," Vega said.

"Why do I have to listen to you?!" Lucien snapped. Even so, he still followed Vega.

The four of them passed by one another before charging toward their respective targets.

"Uraaa!"

Ryuken leaped high into the air before bringing his heel crashing down onto the monster. The kick landed squarely on the rhinoceros’s head, causing it to stagger, but it still didn’t stop charging.

"Damn it! This monster’s hide is too tough!" Ryuken cursed as he flipped through the air and prepared for another attack.

"You have tough skin, huh? Then this skill is the perfect gift for you!"

"Piercing Thrust!"

Lars pointed his spear straight ahead, aiming at the exact spot Ryuken had struck moments earlier.

Bam!

Crack!

A crack instantly spread across the rhinoceros’s head.

"Nice one, Lars!" Ryuken gave him a thumbs-up before launching himself forward with another spinning drill kick.

BOOM!!

The crack widened instantly before blood erupted like a fountain. The giant rhinoceros collapsed to the ground, completely lifeless.

On the other side, Vega and Lucien combined their skills.

"Desert Claw!"

Sand gathered around Lucien’s hand before shooting forward and forming a massive claw. It slammed into the giant crocodile, causing the monster to roar in pain.

Vega then used Blink Step, appearing directly above the monster. He pulled his right hand back as dark mana rapidly gathered in his palm.

"Shadow Burst!"

He unleashed the condensed dark magic, instantly engulfing the giant crocodile in darkness before a violent explosion erupted.

When the smoke cleared, only a massive crater remained. The giant crocodile had completely vanished.

’So this is the power of Phantom Magus...’

Lucien watched silently as he witnessed the class in action for the very first time. And the fact that it was being wielded by his rival made it seem even more terrifying.

On the other side, Lars stood there with his jaw hanging open.

’Is that guy using the Phantom Magus class? Why does it look so much stronger than when I used it? ’

Lars was one hundred percent sure that Vega was using the same Phantom Magus class. He had clearly seen him use Blink Step and Shadow Burst, two of the three core skills of Phantom Magus.

However, when Vega used them, it felt as though he was wielding a far more powerful version of the class.

"Vega! You’re alright!" Ryuken ran toward him.

"It seems so. Where are the others?" Vega asked as he adjusted his mask.

"I’m searching for them too. But how did you end up teaming up with this guy?" Ryuken asked, making a disgusted face as he looked at Lucien.

Lucien let out a sneer.

"It’s not like I wanted to. We just happened to run into each other by accident," he replied.

Lars and Justin then walked toward them. Vega and Lucien looked at Lars. They had both noticed that his spear skill had managed to wound the giant rhinoceros’s tough hide, something even they had struggled to break through.

"You...why do I feel like I’ve seen you before?" Lucien asked as he stared at Lars.

Lars smiled awkwardly and scratched his head.

"Hello. We actually met before at the Dungeon Hub. But maybe you’ve already forgotten."

’Is that so? I rarely forget someone who’s strong.’ Lucien thought to himself.

Vega also greeted Lars and Justin with a nod.

"Anyway, we need to head toward the center of the city. I’ve already scouted most of this area. The monster concentration is highest near the center, and most of the hunters should also be there. Maybe we will find our teammates as well," Vega said.

Everyone nodded in agreement. Even Lucien was forced to go along with them. Trying to move alone in an area overrun by monsters was practically suicide, so he had little choice.

Before leaving, they all glanced at the human corpses scattered across the street for a second. Then, the group continued onward.

At the center of the city, the situation had become even worse.

Hunters were scattered everywhere, fighting monsters from all directions. Because the buildings were packed so closely together, it was extremely difficult to move while battling.

However, leading the charge was Arun with his entire body covered in molten lava. He leaped from a nearby rooftop before diving toward the ground.

"Volcano Smash!"

BOOM!!

A giant lion monster’s head was obliterated by his punch. The lava released from the impact spread across the ground, engulfing several nearby monsters in flames.

"Nicely done, Mr. Arun!"

"This is the might of the Epic-Rank class, Volcano Vanquisher!"

The hunters from his company cheered loudly, while the surrounding hunters watched in amazement.

"Head toward the palace! Quickly!" Arun immediately ordered his men. He didn’t care about what the other hunters were going through.

The only thing that mattered to him was obtaining as many rare and exotic Class Books as possible. His company desperately needed them. Arun believed VolcaCorp was currently leading the charge.

Then suddenly, a brilliant light erupted nearby. The surrounding hunters instinctively covered their eyes. Arun just clicked his tongue in annoyance.

High above them, a woman floated gracefully in the air. Behind her spread a pair of magnificent golden wings.

The leader of Golden Wings had finally made her appearance!
