Cannon Fodder In Apocalypse: I Rule With Sanctuary Evolution System
Chapter 136: Medicine
Li Han immediately frowned.
"You are truly such a greedy person. Why don’t you go and explore on your own?"
Ni Mengxue waved her hand lazily. "I’m too tired. I don’t have the energy right now. Just show me."
Li Han was almost on the verge of tears when Michael suddenly laughed at their interaction.
Li Han pouted. "Brother Michael, you should be siding with me rather than laughing!"
Ni Mengxue was about to say something when a voice suddenly echoed from behind them.
"Michael! Please come back to me!"
Ni Mengxue turned around.
The moment she saw the beautiful red-haired woman approaching, she finally remembered where she had seen Michael before.
’He’s that woman’s husband.’
Ruby quickly ran toward Michael and knelt in front of him with a bouquet in her hands.
"Michael, as long as you’re willing to forgive me, I promise I’ll make your favorite food. You like snail noodles, right? I’ll make them with my own hands. Don’t you like osmanthus milk? I’ll make that for you too."
Michael snorted and turned away.
Li Han immediately frowned. "Milk? Brother Michael is allergic to milk."
He even blinked innocently after saying it.
Ni Mengxue paused, then amusement flashed through her eyes. ’So Li Han really is gay.’
She had realized it much later than she should have. But now that she thought about it, some of his seemingly innocent remarks and the way he looked at Michael did seem rather suspicious.
She crossed her arms and watched the show.
Ruby snorted. "I didn’t ask for your opinion."
She immediately turned back to Michael.
"You don’t like osmanthus milk? That was just a slip of the tongue. How about this? I’ll find your favorite stir-fried vegetable dish and make it for you myself."
Michael laughed bitterly.
"When I was with you, you would count every single penny and wouldn’t even buy me my favorite snail noodles because they were too expensive. Now you’re suddenly telling me you can afford them?"
His expression turned cold. "You’re such a hypocrite."
Ruby lowered her gaze. Ni Mengxue noticed something else.
Ruby was wearing a beautiful white dress with a bright floral pattern. It had a square neckline and short sleeves, and the woman’s figure was slim and attractive.
But despite its expensive-looking design, the dress had clearly faded from repeated wear.
’Interesting.’
From Michael’s words, it seemed that Ruby had always been extremely frugal with him.
Yet she had somehow managed to support numerous other husbands. ’Could it be that she spent most of her money on her other husbands?’
Ni Mengxue became even more curious.
Ruby hurriedly said, "Michael, you might not know this, but I was doing that because..."
"I’m not interested in your excuses."
Michael interrupted her. But before he could say anything else, he suddenly began coughing.
Ruby’s expression changed instantly. She quickly pulled a packet of medicine from her pocket and handed it to him.
"Here, take this."
Michael frowned but didn’t refuse. He took out a tablet and swallowed it. Only then did his coughing gradually stop.
Ni Mengxue paused.
The mystery surrounding this strange couple had seemed difficult to understand. Now, the pieces were beginning to fall into place.
’Some things don’t need my interference.’
She turned around and walked outside.
The streets of Silent Knight Base were bustling despite the apocalypse. People moved between shops and stalls, carrying zombie crystals and exchanging whatever resources they had managed to obtain.
What caught Ni Mengxue’s attention was a restaurant. ’Someone actually managed to open a restaurant during the apocalypse?’
Ni Mengxue decided to see what the famous noodles tasted like.
But the moment she saw the menu, she froze. One bowl cost one meteorite-grade zombie crystal.
’One bowl of noodles costs that much?!’
1 mid-tier zombie crystal was incredibly valuable, with even a single one worth nearly a thousand ordinary zombie crystals.
’How can anyone afford to eat here?’
Ni Mengxue silently turned around and walked back toward the hotel.
As she approached, she saw Ruby coming out.
The woman was crying, her eyes were red, and her appearance was disheveled.
The moment Ruby spotted Ni Mengxue, she rushed toward her.
"It’s you! This is all your fault, you bitch! If you hadn’t provoked me, I wouldn’t have abused my Mikey!"
Ni Mengxue raised her hand. Slap!
The force of the slap sent Ruby stumbling to the ground.
Ruby’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Her entire body trembled as though she couldn’t believe that someone had actually dared to slap her.
She slowly raised her hand and pointed at Ni Mengxue. "You?"
Ni Mengxue looked down at her calmly. "What did I do wrong? You were the one abusing your husband."
She paused.
"Even if you were being frugal because you needed to save money for your husband’s medicine, did you really have to become abusive toward him?"
Ruby froze and her expression changed completely. "How do you know?"
Ni Mengxue chuckled. "Some things aren’t difficult to figure out."
She glanced at the medicine packet still clutched in Ruby’s hand.
"Like that medicine you’re carrying everywhere."
Ruby stared at her.
"The other day, when we almost collided, I felt something scrape against my side. My clothes weren’t torn, and I wasn’t injured, so I didn’t think much about it."
Ni Mengxue narrowed her eyes.
"But now that I think about it, it was probably that medicine packet, wasn’t it? You’re carrying his medicine with you everywhere."
Ruby’s lips trembled.
"And most of the money you earn probably goes toward buying his medicine."
Ruby stared at her in disbelief.
Ni Mengxue continued, "Let me guess. You married other husbands for money as well, didn’t you?"
Ruby couldn’t answer.
For the first time in her life, she felt as though someone had seen straight through her.
If there was one person she had ever truly loved, it was Michael.
When she had been an orphan, she had decided that she would never marry anyone except him.
But then Michael developed a serious illness.
His condition gradually worsened, and the only person who claimed to have a cure was a young prodigy named Jake.
