Ruby began pestering Jake and she repeatedly begged him to cure her husband.

Who would have thought that Jake would impose an unreasonable condition?

He wanted Ruby to marry him and make him her husband. If she refused, he wouldn’t provide the cure.

Ruby was torn.

She struggled with the decision for a long time, but in the end, she gave in.

She formally signed a contract with Jake and even warned him that if he fails she would divorce him.

Once Jake became her husband, however, he began throwing tantrums and deliberately making things difficult for Michael.

Ruby personally witnessed him framing Michael, but every time, she chose to let it go.

She did it because she wanted Michael to live another day.

Eventually, she learned from Jake that he needed the help of other researchers.

One by one, Ruby married them as well.

Their conditions were always the same.

As long as she married them, they would contribute their resources and conduct research in hopes of developing a cure for Michael.

Even now, Ruby had more than thirty husbands.

But the truth was that most of them contributed their money and resources while secretly working on research related to Michael’s illness.

Ruby lowered her gaze.

She began wondering where she had gone wrong.

Maybe taking so many husbands had never been something she enjoyed.

Instead, she had gradually become resentful.

She resented the fact that Michael had such a terrible illness that she had been forced to marry so many men just to keep funding his treatment and research.

She had to manage all of them while continuing to take care of Michael.

Over time, the pressure had made her increasingly irritated.

She constantly felt conflicted.

She believed she was sacrificing everything for Michael, yet he still complained and threw tantrums.

Just a week before, she had to inject all her funds in the final phase of research.

But suddenly he had asked her to take him to the hotel because he wanted to stay in a proper suite and experience what it was like to live somewhere comfortable for once.

Ruby was already running low on funds for his medicine and research.

She had become furious.

When Michael tried to stop her from arguing with Ni Mengxue, she finally reached her limit and slapped him.

She hated herself for it.

Maybe she had indeed abused Michael before.

But every time it happened, she had been exhausted from the life she was forced to live.

No one had ever looked at it from her perspective.

Ruby looked at Ni Mengxue.

"Since you can see how sincere I am, why don’t you go and tell him? Ask him to forgive me. I swear I’ll never mistreat him again."

Ni Mengxue stared at her.

"Why would I you’re a hypocrite."

Ruby froze.

She couldn’t believe Ni Mengxue had said that so bluntly.

Ni Mengxue continued, "You expect Michael to understand that you’re making sacrifices for him, yet you’re not willing to tell him why you’re doing all of this."

She narrowed her eyes.

"Not only that, you’re abusing him. From that slap alone, I can tell you’ve done it before. It wasn’t the first time."

Ruby’s face paled.

"That means somewhere in your heart, you resent him."

Ni Mengxue looked directly at her.

"If you resent him, why do you love him? And if you love him, why do you resent him? Those two emotions can’t continue existing together like this."

Ruby remained silent.

"Leave him alone," Ni Mengxue said. "As for all that research, just give it to Michael as a parting gift."

With that, she turned around and walked away.

Ruby remained frozen.

She couldn’t believe that another woman could give her such a heartless piece of advice.

"It’s easy for you to say that because he’s not your husband!"

Ni Mengxue stopped.

She laughed softly.

"Even if I become resentful of this entire world, I would never resent my own husband."

With those words, she continued walking.

In her previous life, there had been countless moments when she had been alone.

Yet she had never once blamed her crushes for the circumstances surrounding them.

’It was the situation’s fault. It could never have been his.’

Thinking about it, Ni Mengxue continued toward the slum area.

The moment she entered, she nearly gagged.

A foul odor filled the air.

The environment was filthy, and many of the residents behaved without the slightest concern for hygiene or manners. Some spat while talking, while others openly touched and shoved each other as they argued.

It felt more like an overcrowded public park than a residential area.

Ni Mengxue’s disgust grew stronger as she walked through it.

Eventually, she reached the person in charge.

The slum leader was lounging on a raised platform with piles of garbage and dirt scattered beneath it.

He casually used a toothpick to pick something from between his teeth.

When he saw Ni Mengxue approaching, he immediately straightened up.

A smile appeared on his face.

"Oh my God, Miss Beauty! What brings you here? Is there something I can help you with?"

Ni Mengxue calmly said, "I heard you’re the person responsible for taking the people who volunteered to move to Fair Shallow Land."

The leader quickly nodded.

"Yes, yes, yes! That’s me."

He looked at her curiously.

"You must be the representative from Fair Shallow Land, right? I have a few things I want to ask."

The leader immediately smiled and introduced himself.

"Hi, I’m Giga. I’ve lived in these slums for the past five years, and I’m the leader here."

Giga shifted slightly before asking, "So, can I start asking my questions now?"

Ni Mengxue nodded.

Giga’s expression turned serious.

"Until now, we’ve always been treated like backup bait. What we want from Fair Shallow Land is actually very simple. We want equal status. We don’t want to live in a slum anymore, and we don’t want to be treated like bait. Can Fair Shallow Land provide that?"
