CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 279: THE STEWARD'S ASCENSION
The heavy doors of the inner hall clicked shut, sealing out the echoes of the city below. High torchlight flickered against the polished obsidian walls, illuminating the central dais where Caius sat upon his sovereign throne. Flanked in a grand arc behind him stood the phantom avatars of his divine summons, their celestial and infernal auras humming in silent, terrifying harmony.
Old Bones stood alone at the base of the dais. For six hundred years, the dark elf had walked the realms as an assassin, shadow broker, and solitary wanderer. Now, standing before his God-King, his usual dry composure was replaced by a quiet, grounded gravity.
"Old Bones," Caius spoke, his voice echoing softly through the silent chamber. "You have been my teacher, my guardian, and now my loyal steward. You carried the weight of my vision when this realm was nothing more than dust and promise."
Caius leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. "The cohorts have ascended. The pyramids are anchored. Now, it is your turn. Step forward and choose two of my divine summons to bestow their blessings upon you."
A flicker of surprise passed through Old Bones' dark eyes before his mind began its cold, analytical calculation. He looked up at the arc of divine manifestations. His gaze first lingered on the towering form of the Arachne Weaver Queen, then shifted toward the roaring, lightning-wreathed avatar of the Sabre-Tiger.
"If I may choose, My Sovereign," Old Bones murmured softly, "the Arachne’s silk-weaving shadow domains and the raw kinetic aggression of the Sabre-Tiger would make a devastating combination for a master of assassinations."
Before Caius could answer, the Arachne avatar let out a low, echoing hiss, its eight compound eyes narrowing as its phantom form subtly retreated half a step.
"The Arachne weaves threads only for her brood," Caius said smoothly, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "She will not grant her blessing to an outsider. As for the Sabre-Tiger, its kinetic core is violent and dense, built for brute-force titans, not shadow stalkers. You would be fighting its nature every second of your life."

Caius’s Tri-Pupil Eye of the Void flared beneath his golden-and-obsidian irises. His Inner Sight, elevated by the Eye of the Loom, focused entirely on Old Bones’ chest, peering past skin, muscle, and bone into the dark elf’s soul.
There, floating within his chest, was an ultra-rare, ghostly grey mana core, a pristine, pure vessel radiating profound shadow affinity, untouched by elemental corruption.
"Your grey core is built for spatial fluidity and silent execution," Caius advised, his eyes gleaming with cosmic insight. "If you seek wings and supreme mobility, the Seraph or the Crow can grant them. But if you want to optimize your shadow affinity, listen to me, choose the Shadow Wolf and the Three-Eyed Crow."
Old Bones tilted his head, listening intently.
"The Wolf will grant you shadow perception, kinetic riding force, and absolute domain stealth," Caius explained. "The Crow will grant you spatial folding, dual-mana fluidity, and the ability to weave through sub-dimensions. Together, they will turn your shadow grey core into an untouchable, spatial ghost."
Old Bones looked from the shadow-clad Wolf to the three-eyed avian entity, feeling the truth in his master's analysis. He bowed his head low, his dark elf ears dipping slightly. "Your vision sees further than my six centuries of experience, My Sovereign. I accept your guidance."
At Caius’s command, the Shadow Wolf and the Three-Eyed Crow stepped forward from the arc.
The Wolf let out a silent howl, extending a glowing claw made of pure shadow essence that plunged directly into Old Bones’ chest. Simultaneously, the Three-Eyed Crow cawed softly, plucking a two-feather crow essence radiating dense spatial darkness and golden solar light, embedding it alongside the wolf’s claw.
Old Bones gasped as a violent wave of spatial-shadow energy flared beneath his skin, his grey core expanding rapidly to consume the dual essence.
Caius stood up from his throne, sweeping his cloak aside as the ancient, runic power of the Calamity Forge awoke within the chamber floor, surrounding Old Bones in a protective, glowing array.
"Absorb the essence and channel it into your core," Caius commanded softly, standing guard as the forge’s energy flared to life. "Step into the Calamity Forge, Old Bones. I will watch over you as you reach new heights."
