CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 273: THE WINGS OF THE ARCHANGEL

  • Next Chapter

Deep beneath the etched stone of the fifth pyramid, two thousand Bird-head initiates marched into a subterranean cavern bathed in ethereal, shimmering light. High above them, suspended in the vault of the central trial hall, hovered a colossal avatar of the Obsidian Archangel. Its four feathered wings spanned the darkness, alternating between cold lunar silver and blinding solar gold, casting a suffocating celestial pressure over the initiates.

The doors behind them slammed shut, signaling the start of the Three Sacred Trials.

The First Trial, the Trial of Divine Gravity, struck without warning. A crushing tide of hyper-dense lunar force slammed down upon the assembly floor, multiplying the weight of their bodies tenfold. Earthbound and pinned to the marble, many initiates cried out as their hollow bones creaked under the immense gravity. Only those who possessed absolute mental conviction and unyielding martial pride managed to dig their talons into the stone, forcing themselves to stand upright under the celestial weight.

Those who survived the first pressure were instantly dragged into the Second Trial, the Gale of Truth.

Hurricanes of razor-sharp white kinetic plasma and golden solar winds swept through the hall. The tempest tore into their flesh, shearing away lingering doubt, physical weakness, and spiritual impurities. The winds tested not their hide, but their courage, demanding they flap their feathered arms and leap directly into the vortex rather than cower on the ground.

Finally, those who soared through the gale faced the Third Trial, the Archangel’s Judgement.

The Obsidian Archangel opened its glowing eyes, letting out a screech that resonated directly in their souls. A rain of burning solar-lunar feathers cascaded from its wings, piercing through the chests of every remaining initiate to ignite their mana cores.

For one thousand six hundred Bird-head warriors, their bodies underwent a violent, glorious ascension. Screams of agonizing transformation echoed through the hall as their shoulder blades split, bursting forth with two magnificent, feathered obsidian wings laced with radiant golden solar veins. Their talons hardened into spatial steel, and their eyes burned with golden celestial fire. They rose into the air on strong, silent currents, forged into the undisputed Air Cohort of Caius's war machine.

Yet, four hundred initiates could not fully absorb the divine core evolution. Their spirits flickered, unable to endure the total fusion of lunar and solar authority.

As the celestial energy stabilized, they did not sprout wings, nor were they destroyed. Instead, the Archangel’s golden glyph burned permanently into their foreheads, locking their cores into a permanent, supportive bond with the structure itself.

They fell to their knees, their bodies strengthened and their armor hardened, reborn as the Warrior Serfs of the Archangel. Though denied the sky, their minds filled with a solemn, sacred purpose: to serve as the temple’s permanent guards, attendants, and ritual defenders, bound forever to maintain the node that housed their deity.

Above them, sixteen hundred fully fledged sky-warriors hovered in formation, their pair of new obsidian wings blocking out the chamber's light as they prepared to bring death from the heavens for their God-King.
