CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 274: THE SHADOW PACK
Deep within the subterranean expanse beneath the fourth pyramid, fifteen hundred human scouts and skirmishers stepped into an endless, starlit twilight. Above them, perched atop a jagged ridge of black obsidian, crouched the massive avatar of the Shadow Wolf. Its pelt was woven from pure celestial darkness, interlaced with shimmering veins of golden solar light, and its crimson eyes burned like twin suns through the gloom.
The iron gates behind the light-armored warriors vanished into the mist, signaling the start of their three tests.
The First Trial, the Trial of the Veil, began as the twilight collapsed into total, suffocating darkness. Senses were stripped away; sound, sight, and spatial balance dissolved into nothingness. Phantom shadow blades whipped through the pitch-black air, striking without warning. To survive, the skirmishers could not rely on their eyes. They had to awaken their spiritual perception, tracking the subtle vibrations of solar-shadow threads shifting around them to dodge and parry the invisible lethal strikes.
Those who survived the darkness were thrust into the Second Trial, the Savage Hunt. The hall expanded into a vast, labyrinthine forest of crystalline shadows and shifting terrain. Spectral prey, ferocious beasts forged from compressed solar light, sprinted through the terrain at blinding speeds. The initiates were forced to abandon individual tactics, uniting into seamless, silent hunting packs to corner, stalk, and bring down the radiant beasts before the sands of time ran out.

Finally, the remaining hunters stood before the high ridge for the Third Trial, the Communion of the Pack.
The Shadow Wolf let out a low, reverberating howl that shook the very foundation of the bedrock. A surging wave of celestial shadow domain swept through the cavern, washing over every warrior's mind. Out of the darkness materialized wild, untamed entities, colossal wolf constructs forged from living black steel, their eyes glowing with white-gold solar cores.
For one thousand skirmishers, their mana cores resonated in flawless harmony with the beasts. They reached out, burying their gauntleted hands into the dark, metallic fur of the constructs. A surge of dual energy bound rider and mount at a soul level. The thousand human warriors swung smoothly into the saddles of their black steel wolf mounts, transformed into the swift, terrifying vanguard of Caius’s army, the Shadow Wolf Knights.
Yet, five hundred initiates stumbled during the grueling final test. Their spirits hesitated, unable to tame the wild kinetic fury of the black steel beasts before the divine domain receded.
The Shadow Wolf cast a cold, evaluating gaze upon the remaining five hundred. Though they lacked the absolute spiritual dominance required to command a steel wolf in battle, their resolve remained unbroken. The golden-and-shadow glyph of the wolf burned onto their forearms, granting them enhanced shadow agility without destroying their cores.
They were not discarded. As the pack roared around them, the five hundred stood tall, accepting their temporary path. They were appointed as the Squires of the Wolf Knights, tasked with tending the steel beasts, maintaining the vanguard’s shadow armaments, and preparing their bodies and minds to undergo the next trial cycle when the pyramid opened its gates once more.
