CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 247: THE WHITE TIDE
Caius and White Bones walked down the cracked, overgrown road leading toward the distant citadel, their calm pace resembling a relaxed afternoon stroll rather than a march through a blighted realm.
Perched on Caius’s right shoulder was the Eclipsed Tri-Ocular Sovereign. But where jet-black feathers had once absorbed the light, the divine beast was now covered in pristine, shimmering white plumage, its three eyes glowing with a soft, golden radiance.
Caius glanced at the bird and let out a bright chuckle. "Ah... white crow. So what am I supposed to call your murders now?"
The crow shifted its massive talons on Caius's pauldron, pausing for a long, deliberate moment as its three golden eyes blinked. Then, in a raspy, dry voice that perfectly mimicked White Bones' deadpan tone, it croaked, "Very funny, very funny."
Caius burst out laughing. The imitation was so spot-on that even the surrounding air seemed to lighten.
"Fair enough," Caius grinned, tapping the bird's beak. "Send out your... white doves to recon the human bastion."
"Caw! Caw!"
Ten brilliant white crows detached from the beast's shadow, launching into the crimson sky like blinding streaks of light as they flew toward the siege line.
Beside him, White Bones adjusted his holy, ivory robes and let out a long, weary sigh. "My Lord really knows how to roast his loyal servants."
Before Caius could reply, the dead trees along the roadside burst open. Ten snarls echoed through the crimson haze as ten smaller Red Horde beasts leapt onto the path, led by a towering, heavy-armored commander whose rusted iron plating was grown directly into its bone structure. Burning red eyes locked onto the two travelers, its jaws dripping with infectious rot as it prepared to pounce.
They stared at Caius and White Bones, completely baffled by two figures casually strolling through a death zone as if taking a morning walk.
Fwip.
White Bones didn't even pause his step. Hand on his hilt, he drew his saber in a single, fluid arc of blinding solar light and stepped past the pack.
SLASH!
A wave of pristine, golden mana cleaved through the air. All eleven beasts froze mid-bound before sliding perfectly in half. The moment the solar energy touched their flesh, the red corruption ignited, burning their remains into piles of harmless white ash before they even hit the ground.
If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
Sheathing his saber, White Bones looked back at the piles of dust, blinking beneath his ivory cowl. "That... was easy?"
"Don't get careless," Caius replied smoothly, keeping his pace. "We won't know their true strength until we meet their horde."
Continuing up the winding road, the two reached the crest of a high ridge overlooking the expansive valley.
Below them, over fifty thousand Red Horde monstrosities swarmed the base of a massive stone citadel nestled deep within the vast basin of the valley floor. The architectural layout was a staggering marvel of ancient engineering: at the exact center of the complex rose a monumental, terraced stone pyramid, its broad, sweeping staircases climbing tier upon tier toward a high sanctum at its apex. Surrounding the towering central structure were sprawling stone-paved plazas and densely packed civilian residential blocks, all tightly enclosed within colossal, multi-layered exterior stone walls that mapped out the valley in geometric harmony.
Linking his perception to the white crows circling high above, Caius analyzed the bastion and its defenders in striking detail.
The citadel's outer walls were carved directly from massive dark bedrock foundations, deeply etched with endless rows of names, historical sigils, and braided patterns. Protective ward-lines ran across the masonry, flaring with faint, pale light whenever the Red Horde's corrosive bodies smashed into the rock, preventing the corruption from seeping into the stone.
The defenders holding the ramparts were unlike any humans Caius had encountered before.
Their skin was a distinct, smooth slate-gray, heavily marked with precise warding tattoos and surgical scars. They fought with disciplined, brutal efficiency, wielding wide wooden macuahuitl swords embedded with razor-sharp obsidian blades, hurling javelins from carved atlatl spear-throwers, and thrusting obsidian-tipped spears wrapped in warded twine around the hafts.
As Caius watched through the Eye of the Loom, a section of the wall was breached. Several gray-skinned warriors immediately stepped forward, their bodies swelling as thick black veins erupted across their gray flesh. Driven into a controlled, terrifying rage by glowing ward-lines etched along their spines, these berserkers hurled themselves into the breach, swinging their obsidian-edged blades and chopping down beasts with savage precision while officers behind them chanted rhythmic ward-words to maintain their sanity.
Near the parapets, a gray-skinned defender collapsed, bitten deep by a dying monster. Before the infectious rot could spread and mutate the fallen soldier, an elder warrior swiftly knelt beside the body, expertly wrapping a braided string of warded twine around the corpse's neck while reciting a swift ritual. Faint mana flashed, severing the fallen warrior's core connection and releasing his soul before the body could reanimate as a monster.
"Fascinating," Caius murmured, his golden-violet eyes tracing the glowing ward networks across the slate-gray skin of the defenders. "They aren't just surviving this world... they've built an entire civilization centered around warding, memory, and resisting the rot."
"And they are completely surrounded," White Bones added, watching the fifty thousand beasts press relentlessly against the main gates. "If those doors give way, their entire fortress will be consumed."
Caius folded his arms, a cold, calculating smile playing upon his lips. "Then let's give them a hand."
