CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 248: GODS OF LIGHT

White Bones looked at Caius, his ivory cowl tilting slightly as he glanced down at the vast valley basin below, where the multi-layered stone citadel and its central terraced pyramid loomed under the bruised red sky. "How?"

A slow, dangerous smile spread across Caius’s face. "We wedge our way straight toward the city."

"Amidst a sea of fifty thousand?" White Bones muttered, adjusting his grip on his hilt.

"Come," Caius said, his voice laced with suppressed excitement.

With a flash of white-gold light, a spatial rift tore open beside him.

Out stepped the Arachne Princess. Her dark chitin armor was now overlaid with shimmering white-gold patterns, her four additional spider arms gleaming like polished ivory. Crown Threads spun from her fingers, no longer dripping with corrosive shadow-venom, but laced with pure, searing solar energy. She let out a soft, hissed click of annoyance. Her inner nature detested the bright, holy frequency, but under Caius’s absolute Crown Core authority, her entire brood moved as one. Below the ridge, hundreds of solar-attuned Arachne warriors emerged from the treeline, forming a lethal rear-guard to purge any beast attempting to close in behind them.

"I’ll take the lead. You two hold the flanks," Caius ordered, his gaze fixed on the surging red tide below. "White Crow, keep eyes in the sky."

"Caw!" The massive white crow circled high above, its three golden eyes mapping the flow of the Red Horde in real-time.

Caius drew his dual short-swords. Circulating his Loomheart Method, he guided his dense core energy through his pathways, but instead of the usual destructive black aura, he unleashed a torrent of blinding, golden-white solar mana. His Black Core generated the raw, overwhelming force, while his Crown Core imposed absolute intent, converting the energy into pure, holy devastation through the reversed Calamity Forge. White-gold lightning crackled violently along his blades.

Without another word, Caius leaped off the ridge. He slammed directly into the rear of the Red Horde like a falling star, sending a shockwave of white solar fire rippling across the dusty ground.

High above on the citadel’s massive stone ramparts, the defenders stood frozen against the parapets, clutching their obsidian-edged macuahuitl and warded atlatls in utter astonishment.

Among the slate-gray Æthrynn warriors and ward-crafters stood the trapped remnants of the Stormguard host, sixty-five battle-hardened survivors who had sought shelter behind these ancient walls. At the front line stood Bruga, the Skarnulf Warden, leaning heavily on his greataxe Pyrebite, his left arm scorched down to the bone from the gate's rupture. Beside him, the four Virak'tai scouts, Vaelren, Thalryn, Ilyr, and Shae, held their sigil-etched bows in stunned silence.

Beside them, Nyzekh, the Virak’tai Warden, rested his hand on his weapon, his dark elf eyes fixed entirely on the carnage unfolding below.

To the rest of the citadel defenders, it looked like a holy miracle. But to Nyzekh, a master of bladecraft and void-warfare, he saw the absolute truth of what was happening.

The two entities holding the flanks were undeniably terrifying. The ivory-robed White Bones moved like a lethal phantom, his dual blades severing skulls with terrifying precision, while the spider queen wove spatial threads of white light that sliced through waves of armor. They were ruthless, disciplined executioners.

But the tip of the wedge, the man leading them, was purely godlike.

Nyzekh watched in breathless awe as Caius moved through the red sea. Executing Moonless Step, Caius vanished into streaks of white light, reappearing at impossible lateral angles. But what transfixed Nyzekh was the lead warrior's complete lack of a set guard or static form.

It was the living, predatory manifestation of The Open Blade.

Through the multi-layered vision of his Eye of the Loom, Caius's Far Sight locked onto the cores of the swarming beasts, his Inner Sight tracked their corrupted mana surges, and his Fate Sight mapped every lunging claw and snapping jaw as luminous, woven strands of intent in the air before they even physicalized.

The Open Blade, a formless framework designed to devour and adapt, absorbed the chaotic kinetic energy and reckless momentum of the entire fifty-thousand-strong horde. His Crown Core stripped away rigid forms in real-time, taking the chaotic surge of the battlefield and synthesizing his foundational Black River sequence into a radiant, unstoppable current: the White River.

Dual short-swords whirled without a single pause or defensive reset. The White River did not merely cut, cleave, or parry. Wherever its glowing current passed, corrupted flesh, metallic armor, bone, and blighted rot were absorbed, processed, and atomized into absolute nothingness. Waves of hundreds of Red Horde monstrosities surged into the path of his blades, only to vanish into drifting white embers before their feet could even touch the dirt. A hollow, desolate trench of empty earth carved itself through the center of the horde in the wake of his advance.

Caius was not struggling. He was laughing, wearing a look of pure, unadulterated enjoyment as The Open Blade devoured the horde's aggression, feeding the roaring White River that dissolved the dark.

Seeing such sublime, absolute mastery of the blade, the cold, pragmatic blood of the Virak'tai warden flared violently inside Nyzekh's chest. A thrilling, long-dormant fire ignited within his dark elf soul.

Bruga gritted his teeth, his amber eyes wide as he stared down at the desolate, glowing trench left in the horde. "He... he looks like Master Altan."

Nyzekh slowly shook his head, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Caius as the white current washed away the crimson tide.

"No," Nyzekh whispered, his voice trembling with a rare, fiery thrill. "Different. Our master's blade sings in harmony. His blade, it is open. It devours anything."
