"Young master, Dr. Kent has arrived." The housekeeper’s voice came from outside the door. Joshua Hughes pulled the door open and let the doctor in.

After a basic examination, he took a syringe from the medical kit. Joshua watched as the doctor lightly patted Avery Jane’s arm, then pushed the needle into the slender vein on her wrist. The clear liquid followed the slow pressure on the plunger, seeping into her bloodstream.

Gradually, Avery’s eyes closed. Her whole face was as pale as if she were about to fade away, her long lashes casting shadows in her eye sockets that made her look even more heartbreaking. Her lips were almost translucent.

"How is she?" The hoarse voice was steeped in pain, dragging itself out from his chest.

"Her condition isn’t very clear yet. For now I can only give Miss Jane a sedative. If it were a physical injury, that wouldn’t be difficult for a doctor to handle, but right now Miss Jane hasn’t suffered any external harm. She might have been frightened too severely, triggering an emotion similar to autism. In other words, she’s locked herself away, won’t let others in, and doesn’t want to come out on her own." The seasoned doctor pushed up the gold-rimmed glasses on his nose, looking at the man who had led the Hughes Family to its peak of glory. His brows were tightly furrowed. Was this woman, beautiful like a goddess from the ninth heaven, the one he loved?

"I’ll be going now. I’ve brought a professional nurse; she’ll take care of Miss Jane. We still have to do some basic physical checks every day, but this situation isn’t very promising, Mr. Hughes. If she doesn’t improve in the next couple of days, then I suggest you send Miss Jane to a hospital. I can recommend one in Switzerland. They have very effective guidance and soothing treatment plans for this kind of psychological illness." The doctor packed up his medical kit and left.

Joshua Hughes sat on the edge of the bed, looking at Avery. She lay there quietly, like a sleeping beauty. He just sat beside her, his gaze clinging to her.

Avery, sleep well. I’m here guarding you, I’ll keep all those horrible things from entering your dreams......

He took her soft, cool little hand, wanting to pass the warmth of his palm into her.

Julian Carter had just lain down to sleep when he received Joshua Hughes’s call. Even if he didn’t know what had happened, he could sense the gravity of it. He sped off in his car toward Hughes Manor. Luckily, it was already late at night, so there was no traffic.

Study

Julian Carter had been waiting for his boss for almost ten minutes. The moment Joshua Hughes walked in, he realized that something really serious had happened.

His boss’s gaze was so cold it was terrifying. From the instant he stepped in, the study had turned into a giant ice cave. A powerful aura shrouded the room, making people want to escape yet unable to, leaving them no choice but to respond with extreme caution, afraid that one careless move would plunge them into eternal damnation. If not for all these years of knowing him, if not for those years of licking blood off the blade at his side, an ordinary person would long ago have been scared out of their wits by this man’s terrifying, razor-sharp eyes.

Joshua sat down. His usual favorite tea had already been set out on the desk, but he didn’t want even a single sip. His thin lips were pressed tightly together, his arrogant chin drawn taut. His whole body radiated a fury that wanted to destroy, that terrible emotion spilling out of him, rapidly spreading. The rage was transmitting through every nerve and cell in his body, turning into bubble after bubble, drifting in the air, more and more of them, until invisible clumps of gas filled every inch of space, sticking together so the air could no longer flow. Until even breathing became difficult, until drawing a single breath of air felt like a luxury......

She had suffered that kind of harm under his protection. Just thinking of it made Joshua’s heart twist in pain. All the hurt had burned itself into rage. The resolve to keep his hands clean of blood looked like it wouldn’t hold.

"What happened?" Julian Carter sat directly across from Joshua. Since he’d been summoned here at this hour, there was obviously something his boss wanted him to do tonight.

"Tonight, someone broke into my apartment." Joshua said coldly, his voice thick with hatred and the desire to wipe them out completely.
