Blood on the Canvas, Gold on the Screen
Chapter 463: The Acoustic Mutiny
Chapter 460: The Acoustic Mutiny
Alex lay perfectly still, fully conscious, intensely annoyed, but entirely victorious. He had completely neutralized a physical assault, solved a record label contract dispute, and successfully trapped two of the most energetic women in the industry in a mandatory rest session, all without ever adjusting his posture.
The silence held for exactly four minutes and twenty-two seconds.
It started as a microscopic vibration. A faint, rhythmic tremor traveling through the floorboards.
Tap. Thump. Tap-tap. Thump.
Alex did not move his head. "Shakira. I am actively trying to lower my heart rate, and you are generating a localized earthquake. Please deactivate your left foot."
Shakira was sitting cross-legged next to Salma. She was biting her lower lip, her entire body visibly humming with suppressed, explosive kinetic energy. "I am not doing it on purpose!" she whisper-yelled, her hands gripping her knees. "My hips are fundamentally incapable of absolute stasis! There is no music playing, but my internal metronome is demanding a physical release!"
"An internal metronome is a biological flaw," Alex lectured, his voice a flat, unyielding drone. "It means your nervous system is manufacturing a crisis when none exists. You are voluntarily burning glucose to smack your shoe against the ground. It is an ergonomic tragedy."
"It is called having a pulse, Alexander!" Salma chimed in, immediately abandoning the quiet hour to defend her friend. "We are Latinas! We possess passion! We cannot just turn ourselves into decorative statues because you demanded a ceasefire!"
"Passion is an administrative burden," Alex countered smoothly. "It leads to poor financial planning, elevated body temperatures, and unnecessary sweating. I strongly advise against it."
Jennifer giggled, shifting her weight to look at Shakira’s bouncing knee. "He really doesn’t understand rhythm, Shaki. He thinks a bass drop is a medical emergency."
"A bass drop is a sudden, unprovoked assault on the eardrums," Alex clarified flawlessly. "It intentionally startles the listener. Startling is an involuntary survival mechanism. I refuse to be startled for entertainment."
Shakira let out a frustrated groan, falling backward onto the floor so she was lying parallel to Alex. She stared at the ceiling, but her fingers immediately began drumming a complex, syncopated beat against her own stomach.
Tap-tap-thump. Tap-tap-thump.
"Now you are treating your own torso as a percussion instrument," Alex noted bleakly. "You are literally hitting yourself to avoid relaxing. The sheer inefficiency of your existence is staggering."
"If you don’t let me move, I am going to spontaneously combust," Shakira warned, her voice tight with frantic, bottled-up adrenaline. "I was prepared to fight a team of security guards today! I stretched! I hydrated! You cannot just deflate a rescue mission and expect me to take a nap!"
"I can, and I did," Alex replied. "Your rescue mission was a logistical failure. You arrived after the hostage had already aligned herself with the kidnapper. Now you are simply a guest who refuses to respect the house rules."
Angelina leaned forward, a wicked, highly competitive smirk breaking across her face. "You know, Alex, you can’t just command a force of nature to stop blowing. Shakira has spent her entire life training her body for maximum kinetic output. Forcing her to lie still is like telling a sports car to become a toaster."
"A toaster is highly efficient," Alex reasoned. "It performs one task perfectly, without making a sound until it is finished. Shakira could learn a lot from a toaster."
Shakira let out a sharp, indignant gasp. "Did you just compare my artistic expression to a kitchen appliance?!"
"I compared your baseline utility to a kitchen appliance," Alex corrected seamlessly. "The toaster is currently winning."
Gillian burst into a husky, breathless laugh, clutching her ribs. "You are intentionally provoking her. You know she can’t handle being insulted while sitting completely still. You’re trying to make her explode."
"I am conducting a psychological experiment," Alex murmured. "I want to see how long a pop star can survive without external validation or physical movement. My hypothesis is that she will begin to hallucinate within the next ten minutes."
"I am not hallucinating!" Shakira yelled, throwing her hands in the air and sitting straight up. The quiet hour was officially and permanently dead. "I am bored! I am incredibly, aggressively bored! We are young, we are successful, and we are sitting on the floor debating the merits of a toaster!"
"Boredom is a privilege," Alex stated, his tone dropping into a register of icy, absolute authority. "Boredom means you have successfully eliminated all threats, all deadlines, and all manual labor from your immediate vicinity. People work their entire lives to achieve a fraction of the boredom we currently possess. You are squandering a masterpiece of logistical planning."
Salma scrambled to her knees, pointing a finger at him. "He is doing it again, Shaki! He is using logic to trap us! Do not listen to him! If you listen to him, you will never want to go outside again!"
"I am already starting to see his point," Shakira muttered, rubbing her temples. "It is very peaceful in here. No paparazzi. No producers yelling at me..."
"No!" Salma shrieked, grabbing Shakira by the shoulders and shaking her. "Do not surrender to the void! We have to fight back! We have to introduce chaos!"
Alex let out a long, heavy exhale that conveyed the exhaustion of a thousand collapsing stars.
"Salma," Alex droned. "If you initiate a drum circle in my living room, I will legally adopt you just so I can ground you."
"We don’t need drums!" Salma declared, her eyes blazing with fierce, theatrical rebellion. She looked around at the incredibly amused faces of the Harem Council. "We are going to play a game! A loud, highly interactive game! And Alexander is going to participate!"
"I categorically refuse," Alex stated instantly. "Games require rules. Rules require enforcement. Enforcement is a managerial task. I am off the clock."
"Too bad," Jennifer chimed in, entirely betraying him. "I support Salma. We need friction. We need drama. What are we playing?"
Shakira’s eyes lit up, the frantic energy finally finding a target. "Truth or Dare. High stakes. No holding back."
Alex stared blankly upward. "Truth or Dare is a juvenile interrogation tactic designed to extract sensitive information or force participants into humiliating physical acts. Both options are an administrative nightmare."
"You’re just scared we’re going to dare you to stand up," Monica purred smoothly, resting her chin on her hands with a predatory smile.
The room went dead silent. The ultimate challenge had been issued.
Alex slowly turned his head to look at Monica. His expression was completely blank, but the air in the room seemed to drop several degrees.
"Monica," Alex murmured softly. "You are attempting to leverage my own philosophy against me. You believe that by threatening my horizontal stasis, you can force me to choose the lesser exertion of answering a question."
"Is it working?" Courteney asked, practically vibrating with excitement.
"It is incredibly annoying," Alex admitted.
"Then I will start," Shakira announced, officially seizing control of the room’s dynamic. She pointed a perfectly manicured finger directly at Alex. "Truth or dare, Mr. CEO?"
Alex calculated the caloric cost of refusing to play versus the auditory trauma of listening to them argue about his refusal. The mathematics were, as always, bleak.
"Truth," Alex stated flatly. "A dare implies a physical action. I will not engage in physical action."
Shakira grinned, a wicked, triumphant look crossing her face. She leaned closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Alright. Truth. Which one of us in this room is the most exhausting to manage?"
The Harem Council let out a collective gasp. Angelina sat up, her eyes wide. Gillian covered her mouth, stifling a laugh. It was a flawless, highly dangerous trap. Choosing one woman would instantly ignite a localized civil war, creating massive, high-decibel acoustic friction.
Salma pumped her fist in the air. "Yes! Make him choose! Break his diplomatic immunity!"
Alex did not flinch. He did not hesitate. He simply let out a slow, deeply suffering sigh.
"The premise of your question is fundamentally flawed, Shakira," Alex lectured smoothly, entirely bypassing the trap.
"You can’t dodge the question!" Jennifer protested. "You picked truth!"
"I am delivering the truth," Alex countered. "None of you are exhausting to manage, because I do not manage you. Management implies that I attempt to control your schedules, your emotions, or your physical locations. I do not. I simply exist in the center of the room, and you all voluntarily orbit around my apathy. If any of you become exhausting, I simply stop listening."
"He just called us a solar system of annoyance," Mariah laughed, entirely unoffended.
"I called you a self-regulating ecosystem," Alex corrected. "I am the sun. I provide gravity and warmth. I do not micromanage the planets. Therefore, the answer to your question is a mathematical zero."
Shakira stared at him, her jaw slightly open. "You just logic-ed your way out of a trap by comparing yourself to a celestial body."
"It is a highly accurate metaphor," Alex noted lazily. "My turn. Salma. Truth or dare."
Salma puffed out her chest, radiating defiant energy. "Dare! I am not afraid of anything you can come up with!"
"Excellent," Alex murmured, a slow, terrifying smirk pulling at his lips.
He did not raise his voice. He did not move his hands.
"I dare you," Alex commanded softly, "to remain completely, utterly silent for the next thirty minutes. Not a whisper. Not a hum. Not a single vibration of your vocal cords."
The entire room erupted into chaotic, breathless laughter.
Salma’s face fell in sheer, unadulterated horror. She opened her mouth to protest, her hands flying up to gesture wildly.
"Ah," Alex interrupted instantly, holding up a single finger. "A protest is a violation of the dare. If you speak, you concede defeat. You forfeit your passion. You admit that my stillness has conquered your kinetic energy."
Salma snapped her mouth shut. She glared at him with a fiery, unspoken rage, her eyes burning daggers into his completely relaxed face. She crossed her arms so tightly her knuckles turned white, silently seething, completely trapped by the rules of her own game.
"Flawless execution," Gillian whispered in awe, wiping a tear from her cheek. "You literally weaponized a party game to enforce your quiet hour."
"I am a tactical genius," Alex agreed smoothly.
"You still have to deal with me," Shakira pointed out, a mischievous spark in her eye. "And I haven’t picked yet."
Alex stared at the ceiling, fully conscious, the adrenaline of the verbal sparring actively keeping his brain operating at peak capacity. He had successfully silenced one hurricane, but the other was still sitting right next to him, practically vibrating with the desire to create chaos.
He was wide awake. The afternoon was completely hijacked. And he was beginning to realize, with profound administrative regret, that avoiding effort was currently requiring the most effort he had expended all year.
