Chapter 461: Auditory Mutiny

Alex lay perfectly still, fully conscious, intensely annoyed, but entirely victorious. He had completely neutralized a physical assault, solved a record label contract dispute, and successfully trapped two of the most energetic women in the industry in a mandatory rest session, all without ever adjusting his posture.

The silence in the room was absolute, but it was not peaceful. It was the terrifying, highly pressurized silence of an unexploded bomb.

To his left, Shakira was vibrating. She was sitting completely motionless, but the sheer, repressed kinetic energy radiating from her body was practically bending the laws of physics. Her left eyebrow was twitching in a frantic, syncopated rhythm.

To his right, Salma was glaring at the ceiling, her arms crossed so tightly against her chest that her knuckles were entirely bloodless. She was aggressively inhaling and exhaling through her nose, turning basic respiration into a weaponized threat.

Gillian leaned closer to Angelina, pitching her voice into a flawless, barely audible whisper.

"I give the pop star three minutes," Gillian murmured, her eyes locked on Shakira’s twitching eyebrow. "Her central nervous system is currently rejecting the concept of inertia. She is going to snap."

"You are underestimating the actress," Angelina whispered back, a wicked, fiercely competitive smile pulling at her lips. "Look at Salma’s nostrils. She is heavily oxygenating her blood. She is preparing for a vocal eruption. I say two minutes."

"Betting on the psychological collapse of a guest is an administrative burden," Alex lectured softly, keeping his gaze aimed squarely upward. "You are voluntarily injecting manufactured suspense into a room that I just painstakingly pacified. Suspense elevates the heart rate. I refuse to authorize a gambling ring in my immediate vicinity."

Shakira’s head snapped toward Alex. She did not speak. She simply pointed two fingers at her own eyes, and then pointed them aggressively at him, her glare burning with the intensity of a thousand supernovas.

"I believe she is challenging you to a staring contest, Alex," Monica noted smoothly, thoroughly entertained by the silent hostility.

"Blinking is an autonomic function designed to lubricate the cornea," Alex stated, his tone dripping with clinical disdain. "Refusing to blink is a deliberate, localized drought. It forces the tear ducts to panic. I will not dehydrate my eyeballs for competitive purposes. I forfeit. I win by preserving my ocular moisture."

Shakira threw her hands in the air, her mouth opening in a silent, agonizing scream of pure frustration. She aggressively patted her chest, pointing violently at the floor.

"Aggressive miming is just shouting with your hands, Shakira," Alex critiqued flawlessly. "You are utilizing severe shoulder torque to convey a message that I am actively choosing to ignore. It is a catastrophic expenditure of caloric energy."

Salma suddenly let out a sharp, highly pressurized breath through her teeth. It sounded like a tire rapidly losing air.

Jennifer sat up, raising a perfectly sculpted eyebrow. "Hold on. That sounded like a hiss. Mr. CEO, does a hiss count as breaking the silence mandate?"

Salma immediately shook her head in sheer panic, holding up her hands in surrender and violently pointing at her closed lips.

Alex took a slow, measured breath, entirely stepping into his unwanted role as the reluctant umpire of this domestic hostage situation.

"A hiss is a forceful expulsion of air through clenched teeth," Alex adjudicated, his voice entirely flat. "It implies attitude. Attitude is an emotional weight, and emotional weight is a violation of the peace treaty. Salma, you are on thin ice. One more aggressive exhalation, and you automatically concede defeat."

Salma squeezed her eyes shut, tilting her head back and silently screaming at the heavens.

"This is the most brilliant psychological torture I have ever witnessed," Courteney giggled, clapping her hands silently. "He is literally prosecuting them for breathing too loudly."

Shakira, refusing to accept defeat, decided to escalate the warfare. Since she was legally bound by the dare not to speak, and Alex had just outlawed aggressive hand gestures, she opted for a change of location.

She dropped onto her stomach and began to pull herself across the floorboards using only her forearms, executing an intense, military-style tactical crawl toward Jennifer.

"What on earth is she doing?" Mariah gasped, entirely bewildered as she watched the international pop star drag herself across the room like a sniper.

"She is attempting to bypass the rule against walking," Alex diagnosed bleakly. "Shakira, dragging your entire body weight across a flat surface requires maximum engagement of the core and latissimus dorsi. It is an evolutionary regression. You have voluntarily abandoned bipedalism just to complain to Jennifer in a different zip code."

Shakira stopped crawling. She rested her chin on the floor, staring at Alex with an expression of pure, unfiltered defeat.

"You see?" Alex murmured. "Gravity always wins. The floor is the ultimate equalizer. Please remain down there. It is the safest place for you."

Angelina, utterly delighted by the absolute breakdown of the intruders, decided to add fuel to the fire. She smoothly shifted closer to Alex, resting her head comfortably against his shoulder. She looked directly at Salma.

"It really is incredibly peaceful when everyone just follows the rules," Angelina purred, her voice dripping with unapologetic smugness. "Don’t you agree, Salma? It’s so nice of you to sit quietly on the floor while we relax up here."

Salma’s eyes snapped open. The sheer, overwhelming disrespect of the comment hit her like a physical blow. Her face turned an alarming shade of crimson. She inhaled a massive, lung-expanding breath, her chest rising visibly as she prepared to break the dare and unleash a torrent of righteous, high-decibel fury.

Alex did not move. He did not brace himself. He simply spoke with the calm, devastating precision of a sniper.

"Salma. If you scream at her, you prove that she successfully manipulated your endocrine system," Alex warned softly. "You will be giving away your energy for free. Do you really want to subsidize her entertainment?"

Salma froze. The breath caught in her throat. She looked at Angelina’s victorious smirk, then down at Alex’s completely apathetic face. The mathematics of the trap locked her into place. She exhaled slowly, her shoulders slumping in absolute, total surrender. She crossed her arms again, pressing her lips together so tightly they practically disappeared.

"Fascinating," Gillian whispered, leaning over to inspect Salma. "He just logic-ed her out of a tantrum. He is a hostage negotiator, but only for his own convenience."

"I am a purveyor of efficiency," Alex corrected. "Tantrums require cleanup. Silence is entirely maintenance-free."

Shakira, still lying flat on her stomach a few feet away, suddenly rolled onto her back. She let out a long, heavy sigh, her limbs going completely limp against the floorboards. She stared up at the ceiling, the frantic, buzzing energy finally, fully draining from her system.

"Look," Monica smiled warmly. "The pop star has officially accepted the void. Her kinetic reserves are empty."

"It is a beautiful transition," Alex agreed. "She has realized that fighting the architecture is a tragic waste of time."

The room finally settled into a genuine, unbroken quiet. The two chaotic forces that had breached the perimeter were now completely pacified, lying completely still, heavily supervised by the highly amused members of the council.

However, the victory came at a terrible, undeniable cost.

Alex stared upward, his mind racing with the calculations of the afternoon. He had successfully adjudicated a staring contest, outlawed aggressive breathing, and critiqued a military crawl. His brain was operating at maximum processing speed. The adrenaline of the psychological warfare was fully entrenched in his nervous system.

He was completely, hopelessly awake.

"You’re not closing your eyes," Angelina noted softly, a deeply victorious, teasing lilt in her voice. "You’re wide awake, aren’t you?"

"I am currently suffering the tragic consequences of my own success," Alex admitted bleakly. "I have pacified the room, but the administrative effort required to do so has entirely derailed my circadian rhythm. I am officially a victim of my own competence."

"Good," Jennifer laughed, sitting up and clapping her hands together. "Because the quiet hour is officially over in three minutes, and we are ordering dinner. And since you are awake, you are going to help us pick the menu. We are ordering something incredibly complicated to eat."

"I refuse," Alex stated instantly. "I will not participate in a culinary debate. I am going to lie here and actively resent all of you."

"Resentment burns calories, Mr. CEO," Gillian reminded him flawlessly.

Alex let out a low, resonant groan, completely trapped by his own logic, fully conscious, and entirely at the mercy of the women who had successfully stolen his afternoon.
