Chapter 136: Chapter 136: Daylight Robbery (Part 1)

After buying everything they needed, Sui Sui finally decided it was time to leave Linfeng City with MuMu. It was still early in the afternoon, and if they set off now, they should be able to return to the Wenjian Sect before nightfall. There was no reason to linger any longer, especially since MuMu had already gotten his fill of cakes and Sui Sui had finished everything he needed to do.

With that in mind, the two made their way toward the city gates. The streets were still bustling with cultivators coming and going, but once they passed through the gates, the noise of the city gradually faded behind them. Before long, they were walking along the road leading back to the sect, with MuMu chattering happily at Sui Sui’s side.

The little beast seemed to have an endless supply of things to talk about. Every now and then, he would bring up his cakes, enthusiastically recounting which ones he liked best and which ones he planned to eat first. Sui Sui listened with half an ear, occasionally responding to keep him happy.

However, after walking for a while, Sui Sui suddenly felt as though someone was watching him.

The sensation was faint, almost imperceptible, but it was enough to make him instinctively glance over his shoulder. However when he looked back, there was no one behind them, it was only the plain road they had just traveled. Sui Sui looked around briefly before shrugging it off and continuing forward.

Perhaps he was just being overly cautious.

Yet, only a few steps later, that familiar sensation returned.

This time, Sui Sui’s expression remained unchanged, but a faint sense of unease began to creep into his heart. Something felt wrong. He couldn’t explain why, but his instincts were telling him that they were not alone.

Still, he didn’t turn around again. Instead, he continued walking as though nothing had happened, allowing MuMu to carry on with his endless chatter. However, while appearing perfectly relaxed on the surface, he actually quietly activated their contract and sent a message directly into MuMu’s mind.

"MuMu, just act normal and keep talking. Don’t stop or ask me any questions, understand?" Sui Sui instructed through their contract. "I think someone is following us. When I give the signal, we’re going to make a run for it, okay?"

MuMu looked at him in confusion, clearly wondering why Sui Sui was suddenly acting so strangely. However, remembering his instructions, the little beast obediently continued chattering as though nothing were wrong.

Sui Sui was relieved that MuMu hadn’t made a fuss. He had no idea how many people were following them or what they wanted, but judging from the persistent feeling of being watched, he had a bad feeling about the situation. Rather than alert their pursuers, it was better to pretend he hadn’t noticed anything and wait for the right moment to escape.

"Come a little closer to me," Sui Sui instructed telepathically. "When I count to three, we’re going to run. Don’t hesitate, understand?" MuMu obediently moved closer to his side and gave a small nod, finally realizing that Sui Sui was serious.

Meanwhile, Sui Sui quietly slipped a hand into his spirit pouch and searched through its contents until his fingers found what he wanted. He carefully retrieved three talismans, keeping them concealed in his palm so that anyone watching from behind wouldn’t notice his movements.

"MuMu, are you ready?" he asked through their contract.

MuMu nodded again, his little face unusually serious for once. Sui Sui took a steadying breath and tightened his grip on the talismans. "One..." He began channeling his spiritual energy into them, preparing to activate all three at once. "Two..." He carefully controlled the flow of energy, making sure the talismans were ready. Then, without giving himself another moment to hesitate, he shouted, "Three! Run!"

The moment he gave the signal, Sui Sui flung the talismans behind them. Thick smoke immediately erupted from the ground, spreading rapidly across the road and obscuring their surroundings. Taking advantage of the sudden cover, Sui Sui grabbed MuMu and sprinted toward the direction they were originally heading on, putting as much distance between themselves and their pursuers as possible. However, they had barely run a few steps when angry shouts rang out from behind them.

"Go after him!"

"Don’t let him get away!"

Sui Sui’s heart sank. He had been right all along; someone really was following them, and judging from the way those people were shouting, they had no intention of letting him escape.

As for who they were or why they had targeted him, Sui Sui had absolutely no idea. But that could wait. Right now, getting away safely was far more important than figuring out their motives.

He tightened his hold on MuMu and continued sprinting toward the Wenjian Sect, hoping they could make it back before their pursuers caught up. Surely, those people wouldn’t dare follow them into the sect itself, would they?

Unfortunately, Sui Sui had seriously underestimated his pursuers. Judging from the spiritual pressure coming from behind, these people were far stronger than he was. Among them were several Foundation Building cultivators, and there were even a few at the Golden Core stage.

Against such a group, his cultivation at Qi Refining was practically insignificant, add to the fact that he has not learned any martial art skills and didn’t prepare many offensive items, he couldn’t keep them at bay for long. Before he knew it, the sound of hurried footsteps was already closing in behind him.

"Still trying to run? Don’t even think about it!"

A vicious voice rang out from behind, followed by a sharp crack that cut through the air. Before Sui Sui could react, a sudden sting erupted across his back, as though something had lashed him with tremendous force. The pain spread through his body, and he stumbled forward, nearly losing his balance. When he felt something warm trickling down his back, his heart sank. He had been injured.

Sui Sui gritted his teeth and forced himself to keep running. He couldn’t afford to stop, not even for a moment. If these people caught him now, he had no idea what they would do to him. He could only endure the pain and steal a quick glance over his shoulder, just enough to catch sight of the weapon in his pursuer’s hand.

It was a metal chain whip.

The man wielding it had already raised his arm for another strike, the heavy chain glinting as it swung through the air. Sui Sui hurriedly turned forward again, narrowly avoiding another blow. He tightened his hold on MuMu and continued sprinting, his breathing growing increasingly ragged as he tried to put more distance between them.

At the same time, Sui Sui continued throwing smoke talismans and a few offensive talismans whenever he had the chance, hoping to disrupt his pursuers’ spiritual perception and buy himself more time. Unfortunately, the effects were short-lived, and the men quickly recovered and continued their pursuit. With such a vast difference in both cultivation and numbers, Sui Sui knew he couldn’t rely on the talismans alone to keep himself safe.

He glanced back at the approaching group, his expression growing increasingly grim. If he didn’t do something soon, it was only a matter of time before they caught him. Left with no other choice, he quickly contacted MuMu through their contract.

"MuMu, go! Find Master Shan Li and bring him here. Tell him I’m in trouble. If you can’t find me, use the contract to locate me, understand?"

"B-but MuMu doesn’t want to leave Sui Sui! MuMu can help you!" MuMu protested, his small voice trembling. His little ears drooped, and his fluffy tail curled tightly against his body. He hurried closer to Sui Sui, almost pressing himself against his chest as though staying close enough would somehow keep them together.

Even through their spiritual connection, Sui Sui could sense the little beast’s fear and reluctance. A faint sob slipped into MuMu’s voice as he continued, "Don’t make MuMu go. MuMu doesn’t want Sui Sui to get hurt!"

Sui Sui’s heart softened at his words. He knew MuMu wasn’t simply being stubborn. The little beast was genuinely worried about him and didn’t want to abandon him when he was in danger, he also knew that MuMu has some skills, however he wasn’t sure as to what extent it could go, because beside his ability to eat almost anything, he hasn’t seen MuMu actually show some other power.

Unfortunately, there was no time to indulge him. The pursuers were still closing in, and if MuMu stayed, Sui Sui would have to worry about protecting him as well.

Sui Sui reaching out to pat MuMu’s fluffy head. "Be good, MuMu. You’re still a little kid. What can you do against so many people? If you stay here, you’ll only make things more difficult for us. Go and find help for me, alright?"

MuMu lowered his head beneath Sui Sui’s hand. His little body remained pressed close, and he seemed reluctant to move even after hearing the explanation. For a moment, he simply looked up at Sui Sui with watery eyes, his expression so pitiful that Sui Sui almost wanted to take back his words and let him stay.

But he couldn’t.

After much persuasion, MuMu finally gave a small, reluctant nod. "Then... Sui Sui has to wait for MuMu, okay? MuMu will find the master poker face and bring him here!"

"Of course. I’ll wait for you."

Only then did MuMu finally turn around. His fluffy body disappeared into the mist as he hurried away
