Behind the wedding veil,The Dairy of April
46:The Hidden Sketch
Chapter 46: The Hidden Sketch
The afternoon sun streamed through the windows of Ophelia's apartment.
The place was unusually quiet.
Ethan had been away on a two-day business trip, and for the first time in weeks, she found herself with no invitations, no gallery appointments, and no social obligations.
It was the perfect opportunity to return to the one thing she had neglected.
April's diary.
She placed it carefully on the table, alongside the photographs, newspaper clippings, and handwritten notes she had collected over the past year.
Taking a deep breath, she opened the worn leather cover.
"I've missed something," she whispered.
"I know I have."
For nearly an hour, she examined every page.
Every margin.
Every folded corner.
Nothing.
She leaned back in frustration.
Military training had taught her that answers were often hidden in plain sight.
She closed the diary.
Then paused.
Something felt... different.
She ran her fingers along the inside of the back cover.
It felt thicker than the front.
Her pulse quickened.
Carefully, she held the diary against the light.
A faint outline appeared beneath the lining.
"There you are..."
Using the tip of a thin letter opener, she gently lifted the glued edge without damaging the cover.
A folded piece of paper slipped onto the table.
It wasn't a letter.
It was a pencil sketch.
Ophelia unfolded it slowly.
It showed a university courtyard.
Several students were standing together.
One face had been carefully shaded.
Another had been crossed out with heavy pencil strokes.
At the bottom, in April's neat handwriting, were the words:
"The one who smiles the brightest isn't always your friend."
Ophelia stared at the sketch.
"This wasn't meant for anyone else."
"It was meant for me."
Her phone vibrated.
Anonymous.
She answered immediately.
"You found it."
She froze.
"You knew it was there?"
"I suspected."
"And you didn't tell me?"
"It wasn't my clue to find."
She sighed.
"You always do this."
"I always let you trust your instincts."
He wasn't wrong.
She looked back at the sketch.
"I think April was trying to identify someone."
Anonymous was quiet for a moment.
"Don't assume."
"Verify."
She smiled faintly.
"Still giving lectures?"
"Old habits."
That evening...
Ethan returned from his trip earlier than expected.
He called as soon as he reached the city.
"I brought you something."
"You've been gone for two days."
"I know."
"And somehow I still managed to miss you."
Ophelia didn't answer immediately.
Those words caught her off guard.
Finally, she smiled.
"I'll admit..."
"I missed talking to you too."
Ethan's grin spread across his face.
"I'll be at your apartment in twenty minutes."
"I'll make tea."
As Ophelia ended the call, she carefully folded the sketch and returned it to its protective sleeve.
She locked it inside a small fireproof box hidden beneath her bookshelf.
No one could know she'd found it.
Not yet.
Across town...
Nathan stood inside his study.
His eyes rested on an old framed photograph taken years earlier during a university charity event.
Dozens of students smiled at the camera.
Without thinking, he traced one face with his finger.
A young woman standing in the second row.
Her face had faded with time.
He frowned.
"Why do I remember you?"
The name refused to come.
But the feeling remained.
As he turned away, the photograph slipped from his hand and fell to the floor.
The glass cracked.
For the first time...
The corner of the photograph became visible.
Hidden beneath the frame was a handwritten date.
The same year...
April died.
Nathan stared at it, a strange unease settling over him.
Some memories...
Were beginning to return.
