Behind the wedding veil,The Dairy of April
47: Fragments of Yesterday
Fragments of Yesterday
The cracked photograph remained on Nathan's desk.
He had not touched it since the previous night.
For reasons he couldn't explain, he found himself staring at it every time he entered his office.
It was an ordinary university photograph.
Students laughing.
Professors smiling.
A charity fundraiser that had taken place years ago.
Yet something about it refused to leave his mind.
He picked it up again.
His eyes settled on a girl standing near the back.
Her face was partially hidden by another student's shoulder.
"I know you..."
He whispered.
"But from where?"
A sharp knock interrupted his thoughts.
"Come in."
Daniel entered with the day's schedule.
"You have a board meeting in thirty minutes, sir."
Nathan nodded absentmindedly.
Daniel hesitated before speaking again.
"Is everything alright?"
Nathan looked at the photograph.
"Daniel..."
"Have you ever forgotten something important?"
Daniel smiled politely.
"I forget where I leave my car keys all the time."
Nathan didn't smile.
"I mean something that feels... deliberately hidden."
Daniel's expression changed.
"No."
Nathan slowly placed the photograph back on the desk.
"Neither have I."
Meanwhile...
Ophelia sat in a quiet corner of the city library.
The university archives stretched across an entire floor, filled with old yearbooks, event records and newspaper collections.
She had spent the last two hours searching for one thing.
The charity fundraiser mentioned in the sketch.
An elderly librarian approached.
"Can I help you, Miss?"
"I'm looking for university event records from eight years ago."
The librarian adjusted her glasses.
"That was before our digital archive."
"They're in storage."
"I don't mind waiting."
The librarian smiled kindly.
"I'll bring them."
Twenty minutes later...
Three dusty archive boxes sat on the table.
Ophelia carefully opened the first.
Most of the contents were routine.
Student newsletters.
Club announcements.
Competition results.
Nothing useful.
She reached for the second box.
Inside was a thick guest register from the annual charity fundraiser.
Names filled every page.
Sponsors.
Volunteers.
Guests.
Then...
Her eyes stopped on a familiar surname.
Ashford.
Not one name.
Several.
She quietly copied them into her notebook.
She wasn't looking for proof.
She was building a timeline.
And timelines never lied.
As she closed the register, a folded program slipped from between the pages.
It fluttered to the floor.
She picked it up.
On the back, written in blue ink, were four simple words.
"Meet me after rehearsal."
No signature.
No date.
No explanation.
Ophelia frowned.
"Rehearsal for what?"
She slipped the program into her bag.
Sometimes the smallest clues mattered most.
That evening...
Anonymous sat in front of six computer monitors.
Encrypted data scrolled across the screens.
One alert flashed red.
SEARCH DETECTED: UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES
He immediately recognized the access location.
"Ophelia..."
He leaned back in his chair.
"You're moving faster than I expected."
He reached for the secure phone.
Then stopped.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"No."
"You've earned this lead."
Instead, he opened another encrypted file.
At the top of the page were the words:
CLASSIFIED — EYES ONLY
Below it was a single sentence.
Subject: Operation Veil remains active.
Anonymous's smile disappeared.
"So..."
"It never really ended."
He closed the file immediately.
Some secrets...
Were too dangerous to speak aloud.
Outside the library...
Ophelia stepped into the cool evening air, unaware that someone had been watching the entrance for over an hour.
A woman wearing dark sunglasses quietly folded her newspaper.
She picked up her phone.
"She found the archives."
A calm voice answered.
"Did she find what we removed?"
"No."
"Good."
The woman stood.
"But she's getting close."
The call ended.
She walked away without looking back.
For the first time...
The people hiding the truth were beginning to fear that Ophelia might actually uncover it.
