An Afternoon of Memories

The morning sunlight filtered through Ophelia's apartment, filling the living room with a warm glow.

The breakfast Ethan had brought was long gone, but his laughter still lingered in her mind.

She shook her head.

"This isn't good."

She had spent years learning how to guard her heart.

Now, without realizing it, Ethan was slipping past every defense she had built.

Her phone buzzed.

It was a text from Vivian Sterling.

Lunch? No excuses this time.

A smile crossed Ophelia's face.

I'll be there.

An hour later...

The two friends sat beneath a shaded terrace overlooking a quiet garden restaurant.

Vivian removed her sunglasses and smiled.

"There she is."

"Who?"

"The woman who's finally smiling again."

Ophelia laughed softly.

"Am I?"

"You are."

Vivian reached across the table.

"I don't know what's changing in your life..."

"...but I'm happy to see it."

For a brief moment, guilt washed over Ophelia.

If only Vivian knew the truth.

If only she knew that every smile was balanced against a promise Ophelia had made at April's grave.

She pushed the thought aside.

"Tell me about work."

Vivian groaned dramatically.

"Don't remind me."

"The mayor's charity banquet has been moved up."

"A celebrity wedding changed venues."

"And now three clients want the same ballroom on the same day."

Ophelia chuckled.

"So... a normal week?"

Vivian pointed at her.

"Exactly!"

The two women laughed together.

Across the restaurant...

A man lowered the newspaper he had been pretending to read.

He wasn't interested in the menu.

Or the customers.

His attention remained fixed on Ophelia.

Quietly, he slipped an earpiece into place.

"Target has company."

A voice crackled through the speaker.

"Identity?"

"Vivian Sterling."

There was a brief pause.

"The event planner?"

"Confirmed."

The voice on the other end became thoughtful.

"Continue observing."

Back at the table...

Vivian leaned forward.

"I've been meaning to ask you something."

"What is it?"

"Have you ever thought about what happiness looks like for you?"

Ophelia looked down at her cup.

She hadn't.

Not since April died.

"I don't know."

Vivian smiled gently.

"I think you do."

"You've just forgotten."

Those words stayed with Ophelia long after the conversation moved on.

That evening...

Nathan sat alone in his office at Ashford Holdings.

Daniel entered carrying another file.

"We've completed the second background search."

Nathan looked up.

"And?"

Daniel placed the folder on the desk.

"Nothing has changed."

Nathan opened it slowly.

Every record matched.

Every reference checked out.

Everything was... perfect.

Too perfect.

He closed the file with a quiet sigh.

"Daniel."

"Yes, sir?"

"Do you know what bothers me most?"

Daniel waited.

"When a person's past is completely clean..."

Nathan's gaze settled on the city skyline beyond the window.

"...it's usually because someone cleaned it."

Meanwhile...

Anonymous stood inside a dimly lit operations room.

Several computer monitors displayed encrypted data.

One screen showed surveillance footage from the charity gala.

Another displayed a map covered with marked locations.

A third showed a single photograph of April.

Anonymous enlarged the image.

His eyes narrowed.

"So that's what they were trying to hide."

He immediately picked up the encrypted phone.

His thumb hovered over Ophelia's contact.

Then he stopped.

"No..."

"If I'm right..."

"...she needs to find this clue herself."

He slowly lowered the phone.

For the first time in years...

Anonymous looked worried.

Some truths...

Could change everything.
