Chapter 185: The Hand

Darian’s face lost all color. "That shouldn’t happen."

Lothe moved toward the rail in a single fluid stride. "Don’t touch the formation."

"I wasn’t going to."

"Good. Keep it that way."

A heavy, mechanical vibration traveled through the chamber floor.

Clack.

Clack.

Clack.

Everyone went instantly still.

The sound was unmistakable: something massive was rolling along the rusted rails hidden in the gloom. But the cadence was wrong—the intervals between the first three impacts were identical, yet the fourth impact never landed.

Instead—complete silence.

Caelan’s breath hitched, his face turning pale. "It stopped."

Lothe activated his Qi Sight, his awareness sweeping across the pillars, the central platform, the cabinet, and the branching tracks.

Nothing.

Then—a faint, anomalous shimmer materialized beyond the fog. Not a physical body, nor a distinct spiritual signature. Just a violent warping of space where empty air should have been.

Lothe extended his perception toward it.

The distortion flickered. For a fraction of a second, his mind grazed against a massive, subterranean vacuum chamber located directly behind the sealed bulkhead—then the sensation snapped shut like a severed wire.

His eyes narrowed. That wasn’t enough to confirm a standard teleportation array, nor did it prove a concealed physical corridor. But it confirmed one terrifying certainty: the space behind that door was violating the laws of spatial geometry.

"Everyone, step back from the tracks," Lothe ordered.

Elder Rowan raised his staff, the azure crystal flaring with defensive frost. The others obeyed instantly.

Oren’s telekinetic field tightened around a cluster of heavy ballast stones, lifting them into a protective shield. Nyren slipped into a guard stance by the entrance, her silver blade catching the amber light.

Seana gathered Crimson Blood Qi around her fingertips, while Darian quickly re-anchored a secondary defensive ward into the heavy granite footings of the wall. Caelan kept his focus locked entirely on the shifting fog above the tracks.

Lothe stepped forward—not onto the steel rails, but directly beside them.

His gaze traced the old grooves etched into the iron until they reached the threshold of the heavy bulkhead.

Then he stopped.

A thin line of gray dust spanned the width of the doorway. It had been disturbed, but the displacement defied expectations: the dust had been pushed outward, as if something had forcefully exhaled from inside the chamber beyond.

Lothe’s jaw tightened. "Rowan."

The elder glanced at him. "What is it?"

"Something crossed that threshold outward," Lothe said quietly, his voice dropping into register. "Or something was pulled back inside with violent speed."

A low, subterranean metallic groan echoed through the fog.

The heavy steel door shuddered on its ancient hinges.

Then—

BOOOOOOM!

The bulkhead slammed shut with an impact that rattled the vaulted ceiling, sending a thick shower of ancient dust cascading down from the rafters.

Oren swept both hands upward, his telekinesis catching the falling debris before a single pebble could strike the group. "Stay back!"

Nyren advanced a half-step, her sword angled outward. "That door is governed by something active."

"No," Lothe replied.

He wasn’t looking at the iron. His eyes were fixed on the intricate metal plates making up the door’s surface.

Fine, hair-thin lines had illuminated across the cold steel. Not scratches, and not structural cracks.

Formation lines.

They were etched so faintly that an ordinary scout would have mistaken them for factory imperfections in the pre-cataclysm plating. But Lothe recognized the geometry immediately—and it made his skin crawl.

The lines resembled the outer containment ring of an ancient sealing formation. Yet several terminals ended abruptly in mid-metal, as though their primary power conduits had been savagely ripped out.

He dropped into a low crouch, hovering his fingers an inch from the glowing circuit. "Don’t touch the panels."

Darian froze mid-motion. "What did you find?"

"I’m not certain yet," Lothe murmured, tracing the erratic path of the lines from one iron panel to the next. "The arrangement is broken."

"Damaged by time?" Caelan asked.

"Perhaps." Lothe studied the geometric intersections. "Or engineered to look broken."

Seana stepped up beside him, her crimson robes rustling. "Can you identify what it’s meant to contain?"

"No." Lothe straightened slowly. "I haven’t even verified if it’s a true seal. It might simply be the logic circuit governing the door’s mechanical locks."

Darian frowned. "Those are entirely different disciplines."

"Exactly," Lothe said coldly. "And until we know which system we’re tampering with, touching it is an invitation to execution."

Click.

A sharp, mechanical snap sounded from deep within the door’s internal housing.

Everyone froze.

CLICK.

A second lock disengaged.

The faint formation lines flared brightly across the metal, an amber pulse racing from panel to panel in a rapid sequence.

Darian’s expression drained of color. "That... that’s the signature of my warning formation."

Rowan turned his head sharply. "Your formation is anchored fifty paces back near the entrance."

"I know." Darian stared down at his wrist in disbelief. One of the heavy brass formation rings was vibrating wildly. "The primary ward just registered a foreign contact."

"Then why did the perimeter lights go dark?" Oren demanded.

Darian’s face tightened into a grim mask. "I don’t know."

CLICK.

The amber pulse died out instantly. Absolute silence reclaimed the chamber.

Lothe looked down at the stone floor beneath his boots. The original warning ward was still there—he could feel its faint, stable energy signature pulsing near the corridor entrance.

Yet something had bypassed its perimeter without shattering the boundary. It hadn’t smashed the ward; it had interrupted its signal.

"Rowan," Lothe said, his voice hard as iron. "We need to verify whether that disruption originated from the door or from somewhere else within the station’s network."

The elder nodded once. "Darian, hold your position here and monitor your rings. Caelan, track any spatial shifts in the fog. Oren, keep the debris suspended. No one touches the bulkhead." He looked over his shoulder. "Nyren, secure our rear."

"Understood," Nyren whispered, pivoting toward the access corridor with her blade raised.

Seana glanced sideways at Lothe. "Little Fox?"

"Give me a heartbeat."

Lothe extended his spiritual perception toward the glowing metal lines on the door. He didn’t force his Qi against the resistance—that would be like grabbing a live lightning wire. Instead, he mapped the residual energy clinging to the surface, tracking the current’s downstream flow.

For several seconds, the energy remained static.

Then—he caught it.

A microscopic pressure drop. The energy flowed across the iron panels, reached the lower mounting bracket, and vanished straight down through the threshold into the stone foundation.

Lothe’s eyes narrowed into slits. The door wasn’t an isolated mechanical barrier; it was wired directly into something buried deep beneath the floorboards.

"There’s a secondary node beneath the floor," Lothe said.

Darian immediately dropped beside him. "Part of the door’s array?"?
