Apocalypse Online: I Awaken the Ultimate Bloodline
Chapter 184: The Hand II
Chapter 186: The Hand II
"I can’t confirm that yet." Lothe pointed a finger at the dusty gap beneath the door. "The energy circuit doesn’t terminate at the metal frame. It runs down into the foundation."
Rowan’s eyes flashed. "Can you pinpoint it?"
"Not without a complete scan." Lothe looked toward the seven branching rail lines. "The signal is riding the structural framework. I’d need to test the nodes one by one to find the origin."
"And how long would that take?" Oren asked, his jaw tight.
"Longer than we have if something decides to use this moment to attack."
As if mocking his warning—
CHUNK.
The massive iron transfer platform beneath their boots suddenly shifted.
A deafening screech of ungreased iron echoed through the vault. One of the heavy, multi-jointed mechanical arms hanging from the ceiling shuddered to life, its gears rotating with a grinding shriek of rusted metal.
A second arm swung outward. Then a third.
The dead machinery was waking up.
"Back!" Rowan roared, his staff slamming against the stone.
The group scrambled backward off the platform. Oren swept his hands outward, expanding his telekinetic shield into a thick wall of floating stone blocks. Darian’s brass rings spun in a blur of amber defense. Seana’s crimson Qi surged over her knuckles, while Nyren braced her stance.
Lothe raised his Void Spear, his dark eyes fixed on the descending machinery.
The first mechanical arm locked into position directly above the northern rail. The second swung toward the hidden under-floor channel. The third rotated toward the rusted metal cabinet Darian had inspected earlier.
CLANK!
A concealed maintenance hatch snapped open beneath the edge of the platform.
Something small slid out from the dark recess, striking the stone floor with a sharp clack and skidding across the flags before stopping near Oren’s boots.
Oren kept his telekinetic grip locked over it. "Is that supposed to happen?"
"No," Rowan answered flatly.
Darian stared at the automated arms. "Those systems were completely dead when we crossed the threshold."
"Did our presence trigger them?" Nyren asked.
"Possibly," Lothe said, never taking his eyes off the sliding object. "Or something on the other side gave the authorization."
He stepped forward cautiously.
The object was a small metal cylinder, roughly the size of a forearm. Its casing was encrusted with ancient soot, but the central locking ring looked brand new, gleaming with unoxidized metal.
Lothe crouched beside it. He didn’t touch the casing.
A fine groove ran around its circumference. Sealed inside the groove was a strip of dark, unblemished alchemical wax.
Seana stepped up beside him, her Herbal Sight flaring in her eyes. "That wax contains processed resin."
"Can you break the seal?" Lothe asked.
"Not safely while it’s closed. The casing is lined with an insulation sleeve."
"Then we don’t open it here," Lothe decided, rising to his feet. "We secure it as evidence."
Rowan nodded. "Darian, log the final resting coordinates of the machinery. Caelan, note the spatial fluctuations. Seana, secure the cylinder."
They moved with disciplined speed. No one touched the grinding mechanical arms. No one approached the sealed bulkhead.
Then Caelan froze.
"Wait."
His voice cut through the noise with razor-sharp tension.
Everyone turned. Caelan was staring intently at the northern rail where the fog met the dark tunnel.
"The spatial distortion," Caelan whispered. "It’s gone."
Lothe snapped his head around. "Completely?"
Caelan swallowed hard. "I can’t sense a single ripple anywhere in the chamber."
Lothe’s grip on his spear tightened until his knuckles turned white. The spatial anomaly hadn’t faded gradually; it had winked out of existence the exact microsecond the machinery had initiated its startup sequence.
He looked from the dead cylinder to the silent rail lines, and finally back to the heavy steel door.
Three separate pieces of evidence. No definitive bridge connecting them yet.
The machinery, the spatial distortion, and the door are all part of a single automated clockwork, Lothe realized. And we just wound the spring.
Before he could voice the warning, a profound, bone-deep tremor surged upward through the stone floor.
THUUUUM.
The grinding mechanical arms instantly froze.
Every overhead industrial light flickered and died, plunging the transfer chamber into sudden, oppressive gloom, illuminated only by Darian’s amber rings and Seana’s crimson Qi.
Oren’s floating stones hung suspended in the dark.
Seana took a half-step closer to Lothe, her shoulder pressing against his. "Did you feel that?"
"I felt it."
THUUUUM.
The vibration hit a second time, harder. The steel rails beneath their boots screamed as they contracted under immense subterranean pressure.
Then—a thin line of sickly pale light lanced out from beneath the sealed bulkhead.
It stretched slowly across the dark threshold, widening by degrees as something on the other side engaged a massive light source.
Rowan planted his staff firmly against the floor. "Get ready."
Lothe lowered his center of gravity, Void Qi swirling around the tip of his spear like liquid smoke.
The pale light beneath the door suddenly flashed crimson.
CLICK.
The first mechanical deadbolt disengaged.
CLICK.
The second lock released with a heavy metallic thud.
Darian stared at his brass rings in utter disbelief. "My warning formation... it’s gone completely dark. Not interrupted—it’s like the magic was swallowed."
Rowan’s eyes locked onto the seam of the door. "Hold your positions."
A final, agonizingly slow mechanical hiss echoed through the vault.
CHUNK.
The heavy steel bulkhead shifted inward by the width of a single finger.
A draft of freezing air spilled through the gap, carrying the heavy stench of wet stone, stagnant copper, and something sickeningly organic—the unmistakable smell of unwashed bodies and terror.
Silence blanketed the chamber.
Then—a hand emerged from the crack.
Pale, dirt-streaked fingers curled desperately around the jagged edge of the rusted iron door. The small hand trembled violently, bruised and caked in dry soot.
Seana’s breath caught in her throat.
From the dark, suffocating void beyond the threshold, a small, cracked voice whimpered into the dark:
"Please..."
The tiny fingers gripped the metal tighter, whitening at the knuckles.
"Do—don’t let them take me back."?
