Chapter 184: The Rails

"Caelan, check the surrounding area for spatial disturbances. Darian, inspect the cabinet without activating anything. Oren, keep the loose debris away from the tracks."

Elder Rowan’s instructions were immediate and precise.

He turned toward Nyren. "Stay near the entrance. If the passage begins closing, I want someone watching our exit."

Nyren nodded and moved toward the corridor behind them, her sword held ready.

"And you?" Seana asked, her crimson robes rustling softly as she stepped closer to Lothe.

"I’ll examine the old station records, if any remain." Rowan walked toward a weathered pillar bearing faded industrial markings.

Lothe glanced at the metal cabinet. "I’ll examine the formation traces around it."

The team separated.

For the next several minutes, the transfer chamber filled with quiet activity. Darian carefully inspected the cabinet’s hinges and locking mechanism, examining each component before attempting to open it. Oren used telekinesis to lift broken stones away from the tracks without disturbing the floor beneath them. Caelan moved along the chamber’s perimeter, stopping wherever the spatial residue became unusually dense.

Seana catalogued the substances she found around the machinery, collecting small samples without mixing them. Nyren watched the entrance while occasionally checking the corridor behind them.

Meanwhile, Lothe studied the platform.

He wasn’t merely looking for active formations. He was looking for evidence that formations had once existed there.

There was a difference. An active formation revealed something about its present function. A damaged one might reveal how it had been constructed. But an abandoned formation could be far more difficult to interpret, especially when someone had deliberately removed parts of its structure.

Lothe crouched beside the cabinet.

There.

A faint trace ran beneath its base before disappearing into the stone. He followed it with his eyes. The trace changed direction near the raised platform.

Lothe stood and moved toward the platform, examining the grooves in the surrounding flagstones. He found a second trace beneath its edge. Then a third near a narrow seam between two iron pillars.

Three locations. Three different residual signatures.

He couldn’t determine whether they belonged to one formation or several independent systems. Their energy signatures were too faint. Too old. And strangely inconsistent.

The first suggested repeated activation. The second had been partially erased. The third carried almost no residual energy at all.

Lothe rubbed his thumb against his chin. "Someone has been working here."

Darian looked up from the cabinet. "Recently?"

"I can’t establish that yet." Lothe examined the seam between the pillars. "whoever modified this chamber understood how to conceal their work." He paused, then glanced at the mechanical arms suspended above the tracks. "And they didn’t rely on formations alone."

Darian followed his gaze. "The machinery?"

"Possibly." Lothe studied the arrangement of the rails and mechanical supports. "A formation master could conceal a formation. A skilled mechanic could hide a mechanism. But someone who understood both could make the two systems interfere with each other’s signatures." He looked back at the faint trace. "That would make the entire structure difficult to investigate."

"Are you saying one person built all this?" Darian asked.

"No." Lothe’s answer came immediately. "I’m saying we shouldn’t rule out someone with both kinds of expertise." He straightened. "We have evidence of modification. We don’t yet have evidence of who performed it, when they did it, or what they intended."

Darian nodded slowly. "Understood."

Lothe returned his attention to the formation traces. The possibility bothered him. Not because it was necessarily true. But because, if it was, the chamber might be considerably more complicated than it appeared.

Elder Rowan finished examining the surviving station markings and stepped away from the pillar. His expression was grave.

He raised his staff. A small blue sigil appeared above its tip, its light illuminating the weathered markings beneath him.

"Arbitration Hall. Elder Rowan Greystone of the Glacial Spirit Sect, reporting from North Exhaust Station."

The sigil pulsed. After a moment, a faint voice answered: "Arbitration Hall receiving. State your report."

Rowan spoke clearly. "We have entered the underground Black-Iron Pneumatic Arteries. The North Exhaust Station connects to an active subterranean transfer facility. We have detected signs of recent movement along the rail network, concealed modifications to the original infrastructure, and traces consistent with materials discovered at the disappearance sites."

He paused. "We have not confirmed the current location of the missing children. We have also not established the identity or number of individuals operating this facility."

The sigil flickered. "Understood. Are you requesting immediate reinforcement?"

"Not yet. The interior layout remains unknown, and we have reason to suspect concealed routes or active mechanisms. Sending an unprepared group underground could compromise the investigation."

"Your assessment will be forwarded to the Joint Council."

"Ensure the report reaches the other three sects. Their operations may uncover information relevant to this location."

"Confirmed."

Rowan lowered his staff. The sigil faded.

Oren looked over from the tracks. "Why not ask for reinforcements now?"

"Because more people won’t automatically make us safer." Rowan tapped his staff against the stone. "We don’t know how many routes this station contains. We don’t know whether the system can be sealed from elsewhere. And we don’t know whether our presence has already been detected." He looked toward the sealed entrance.

"If we send twenty cultivators into a corridor that can close behind them, we may simply create twenty more missing persons."

Nobody argued.

Lothe’s gaze remained fixed on the formation traces. "Besides, if the people operating this place are monitoring the station, a sudden influx of cultivators could tell them exactly how much we’ve discovered."

Caelan nodded. "We need to learn more before we reveal our strength."

Rowan gave Lothe a brief, approving glance. "Precisely."

The spiritual transmission reached the Arbitration Hall’s central office. A clerk immediately copied the report into the Joint Intelligence Ledger. The first message went to General Vaelric Ashford. The second went to the other three Great Sect leaders.

No one ordered the four investigation teams to abandon their assigned locations. Instead, the Joint Council requested a coordinated update.

The Myriad Sword Sect continued sweeping the northern mountain corridors. The Heavenly Thunder Sect maintained its deployment across the eastern ridges using controlled lightning resonance. The Azure Wind Sect continued questioning witnesses and tracing ancestral bloodlines.

The new information changed the significance of their assignments. If the underground station was part of a wider operation, the northern infrastructure, eastern wards, and family records might reveal different pieces of the same network.

But none of the teams yet knew how those pieces fitted together. For now, each group would continue gathering evidence independently. The Joint Council would coordinate their findings once there was enough information to compare.

"Found something."

Darian’s voice drew everyone’s attention. He stood beside the metal cabinet, holding a narrow strip of paper with a pair of forceps.

The paper was brittle. Most of its writing had faded. Only a few marks remained.

Lothe approached. "Where was it?"

"Behind the cabinet’s inner panel. The panel wasn’t locked. It was simply wedged into place."

"Did you remove anything else?"

"No. I checked the hinges first, then used a probe to lift the panel."

Lothe nodded. "Good."

Darian showed him the paper. It contained three columns of symbols. The first was almost completely illegible. The second contained several short vertical strokes. The third held a sequence of numbers, though two had been damaged.

Rowan came over to examine it. "Old depot notation?"

"Possibly," Lothe replied. He studied the symbols. The marks resembled maintenance codes, but several had been drawn over older lines. Someone had altered the document. Whether the alterations were intended to conceal information or simply update an old record remained unclear.

Seana peered over Lothe’s shoulder. "Can you read it?"

"Parts of it." He traced the first column with his eyes. "These marks might identify sections of the station. The numbers could indicate dates, quantities, or route designations."

Darian frowned. "So we don’t know what it says."

"We know it was altered, and we know it was hidden." Lothe carefully placed the paper inside a protective sleeve. "That is enough to make it evidence."

Oren glanced toward the cabinet. "Could it identify where the children were taken?"

"It could." Lothe’s expression remained calm. "Or it could be an ordinary maintenance record unrelated to them."

Oren grimaced. "You’re very good at making things sound less useful than they are."

"I’m trying to keep us from mistaking a possibility for a fact."

Seana smiled faintly. "That’s one of his more annoying qualities."

Lothe glanced at her. "Only one?"

She patted his shoulder. "Don’t get greedy."

For a brief moment, the tension eased.

Then Caelan spoke. "Something has changed."

The lightness disappeared from the chamber. Everyone turned toward him.

Caelan stood near the northern rail, his eyes narrowed as he studied the fog beyond the platform. "The spatial disturbance is moving again."

Lothe’s expression sharpened. "Where?"

"Past the bend. It was almost stationary a moment ago."

"Now?"

Caelan swallowed. "Now it’s coming back."

The warning formation beside the entrance flashed amber. Once. Twice. Then the light went dark.?
