Apocalypse — Chapter 81: I Don’t Want to Be a Savior

“So not only must I rescue you, but I must also support you with everything I have and obey your arrangements?” Xiao Yi looked coldly at the balding man.

“Exactly! We’re doctors, and there are countless patients now. To save the world, everyone must listen to us!” the director declared righteously. “For all humanity, for yourself, and for your friends and family, you must do it!”

“Helping us means helping yourself!”

“You came in an armored vehicle, so hurry and transport us,” the middle-aged doctor ordered arrogantly. “We’re also out of food. If you have any, take it out for us.”

“Can your shelter provide hot showers?” the bespectacled female doctor asked haughtily. “If not, I don’t want to go. I feel miserable if I miss even one shower, and these zombies are disgusting.”

“It would be better if you delivered food to us regularly. We’re accustomed to living here, and your shelter certainly isn’t as comfortable as this villa.”

“In return, we can treat anyone in your shelter who becomes ill for free.”

“Once we create the cure, your shelter will receive it first.”

“You won’t lose anything.”

“Young man, you appear to have a hidden illness. Your complexion is poor,” the younger male doctor said proudly. “I’ll examine you without charging a fee. Cooperate with us properly, and I guarantee your health. I was the youngest chief physician at Jiangcheng First Hospital after studying abroad.”

He placed particular emphasis on “studying abroad” and “youngest.”

Xiao Yi watched him with a cold smile.

His Constitution had reached 100. He had no hidden illness and could not even catch an ordinary cold.

Only the youngest female doctor kept her head lowered and said nothing.

“From the way you speak, you must already have research results. Tell me about them,” Xiao Yi said to the middle-aged man.

“How could results appear so quickly? This is an advanced and extremely complicated medical project! Even the world’s greatest scientists couldn’t produce results immediately!” the doctor answered irritably.

“Ordinary people truly are ignorant. Do you think medicine is easy? When you visit a doctor, if one dose cures you instantly, that isn’t medicine—that’s divine magic...”

A blade flashed.

The hand pointing at Xiao Yi fell to the floor.

Blood sprayed across the younger doctor’s face, leaving him stunned.

“No results?”

Xiao Yi stepped forward and planted his boot on the wailing doctor’s head.

CRUNCH!

Under his tremendous strength, the skull burst apart.

“I forgot to mention something. I despise incompetent doctors who are selfish, possess no real ability, and use their profession to order everyone around.”

These men reminded Xiao Yi of the arrogant doctor who had treated his mother before the apocalypse.

The man had pretended to understand what he did not, ordered test after test, and exhausted the family’s savings. Worse, his incompetence delayed the best treatment and caused Xiao Yi’s mother’s death.

Doctors who healed the sick, saved lives, and upheld medical ethics deserved respect.

Greedy, self-righteous frauds deserved death.

“Murder!”

“Help!”

The two female doctors screamed and collapsed.

The balding director retreated, trembling.

“We can discuss this! If you kill us, no one will treat your illnesses or develop a cure!”

“Be rational!” The young male doctor raised his axe with shaking hands. “We’re humanity’s only hope! If we create the cure, we can save the world. Killing us destroys everyone’s chance to survive!”

“Is that so?” Xiao Yi smiled coldly.

The Blade of Sin swept out, and the young doctor’s head rolled away.

“I never planned to save the world, and I don’t want to be anyone’s savior!”

Xiao Yi approached the director.

“As for treating illness, two female doctors are enough.”

He drove the Blade of Sin into the old man’s chest.

Then he turned to the two terrified women.

“Where is the mutant?”

The bespectacled doctor was too frightened to speak. The younger, delicate-looking woman answered shakily.

“Locked inside our laboratory...”

Xiao Yi pulled her to her feet.

“What’s your name? Take me there.”

“I... I’m Xia Xuan, an internal-medicine doctor at Jiangcheng First Hospital...”

She barely managed to stand and led the way.

“Their claims about developing a cure were lies. They don’t even know what the zombie virus is. They said those things to trick the other survivors into supporting them.”

Xiao Yi nodded, satisfied by her honesty.

“Then why capture a mutant?”

“To study why mutants aren’t infected and why zombies don’t attack them.”

Xia Xuan opened a door, revealing the laboratory.

Xiao Yi understood. Few people would truly devote themselves to saving humanity. The ability to live among zombies without infection or attack was far more desirable.

Bottles and jars filled the laboratory, along with preserved zombie organs. The entire room reeked of chemicals.

Two zombies and a blue-skinned adult woman were confined in one corner.

The mutant possessed an eerie beauty and a seductive figure, resembling a vampire from a European film.

Her eyes were dull. When Xiao Yi and Xia Xuan entered, she shrank back in fear.

“That is the mutant,” Xia Xuan said, pointing to her.
