“Who’s there?”

Two men in white coats rushed out carrying axes. Their voices were tense, and their hands trembled.

“You must know that zombies have overrun Lily New City,” Xiao Yi said calmly. “Everyone in the other villas is either dead or has gone to my shelter.”

“Other survivors told me about you. My shelter needs doctors, so I came specifically to find you.”

An inner door slowly opened. A balding older man and two female doctors emerged.

The older man wore reading glasses and looked scholarly. The women behind him appeared refined and almost naïve about the world.

“Hello. I’m the director of Jiangcheng First Hospital and an academician at the medical university. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

He looked between fifty and sixty, though his well-maintained skin gave him a distinguished appearance.

When he extended a hand, Xiao Yi merely glanced at it.

“You understand the situation outside. The few of you have no chance of surviving alone.”

“I’ll allow you to join my shelter, but you must obey me absolutely.”

“Obey you? Why?” one young male doctor demanded proudly, still holding his axe. “We’re doctors. Only we can save humanity. You should cooperate with us!”

“Our research proves the zombie virus can be cured,” the middle-aged doctor declared. “If you and everyone in your shelter support us and give us enough time, we’ll develop a medicine that both prevents infection and cures people who have become zombies!”

“Think about it, young man!” the balding director said passionately, spreading his arms. “Once we create the cure, survivors will no longer fear infection, and we can save those who have already become zombies!”

“We will become the saviors!”

“We will save all humanity!”

“History will remember our names forever!”

They had used the same speech to persuade Lily New City’s factions.

They considered their work supremely noble. Everyone and everything should yield to their needs, follow their commands, and contribute to saving humanity.

Even though their research had produced nothing.
