Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 664 - 654: Hello 12
"The world is a bizarre place. Besides, these 5S-class mechas we’re wearing are said to be able to purify the air, but in reality, they only purify the small portion we need to breathe."
The implication was that 5S-class mechas weren’t that capable.
Besides, 5S-class mechas were made for combat, not for air purification.
"Then..."
Hugh Finch was still finding it hard to believe.
"I know you don’t believe it. I don’t want to believe it either. But based on the current evidence, it’s the most likely explanation. Of course, it’s also possible our deduction is wrong."
Hearing this, Hugh Finch sighed and said in a low voice, "I need to be alone for a bit. Oh, and tell the Boss and Kai York about this later. Ask them what they think."
"What!!!"
After hearing Moira Lynch’s words and speculation, Shane Rhodes couldn’t help but cry out in shock.
"What happened?" Carole Underwood asked curiously when she saw this.
"It’s nothing, I just stepped on his foot." Moira Lynch casually made up an excuse, then told Shane Rhodes to keep his voice down and opened the Communication Corridor.
"Moira, this is no time for jokes. How could a person be a purifier?"
Moira Lynch said nothing, simply pulling out two air quality reports. One was from when they first arrived, the other was from the most recent scan.
In that short time, the original half a percent had already become a full one percent.
"Even so, that doesn’t prove anything, does it?" Shane Rhodes said.
Moira Lynch didn’t argue, but just brought up another point. "I took the opportunity to have the Healing Device scan Carole Underwood’s body just now. I found that her physical condition has improved significantly compared to when we first met her."
"This change is equivalent to someone constantly pumping her full of super-tonics."
But the group had been with Carole Underwood the whole time. No one knew better than them whether she had taken any super-tonics.
Just then, Hugh Finch walked over with a grim expression, holding a solved 5x5 magic cube.
Seeing the solved 5x5 magic cube, the others instantly knew what he had been doing.
Kai York asked impatiently, "How did it go?"
Hugh Finch didn’t look at Kai York. He looked at Moira Lynch and said, "You guessed right."
One sentence, just three words, yet it left them all frozen in place.
’Guessed right... guessed right?’
’Carole Underwood really is a purifier.’
"What the hell is going on?" Shane Rhodes demanded, a little angry.
In most people’s minds, it was expected for a savior to sacrifice themselves if necessary.
But that was all based on the premise that the savior did so willingly. Carole Underwood, however, clearly had no idea what was going on.
In a situation like this, she was called a savior, but what was the real difference between that and a sacrificial offering?
"This planet became what it is today because of severe pollution. And Carole Underwood is the purifier ’he’ carefully selected. You could say she was born to face this catastrophe."
"What do you mean?"
"It means that Carole Underwood is a child nurtured by this planet. Purifying this pollution is her mission. The planet’s consciousness told us not to interfere with this matter. As for us, as long as we help Joy Underwood eliminate those black shadows, ’he’ will let us clear the game."
That last sentence sounded like a threat.
Shane Rhodes still looked indignant. Seeing this, Hugh Finch said in a serious tone, "Boss, I know this is hard for you to accept, but I have to say it: we need to prioritize. How this planet chooses to save itself has nothing to do with us. Don’t go sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong."
Moira Lynch and Kai York didn’t say anything, but it was clear from their eyes and their silence that they sided with Hugh Finch.
After a long moment, Shane Rhodes took a deep breath and said, "I understand everything you’re saying."
Moira Lynch patted his shoulder. "Boss, don’t be so down. Carole Underwood is this planet’s child; a mother wouldn’t harm her own kid. Didn’t I say it before? Carole Underwood’s physical condition is getting better and better."
"Maybe what’s pollution to us is a great tonic for her."
After clarifying their mission with the planetary consciousness, the group began to actively search for traces of the black shadow monsters.
According to the information Hugh Finch brought back from the planetary consciousness, these monsters were actually formed from the pollutants in the air and had, for some reason, gained sentience.
It seemed that, knowing their origins were ignoble, they began to imitate the most intelligent species on the planet: humans.
When they discovered that no matter how well they imitated them, they could never integrate into human society, they developed the idea of replacing them altogether.
Their mission was to safely escort Carole Underwood to a designated location—the heart of the pollution source—and have her stay there to purify it, while the rest of them were to kill as many of the sentient monsters as possible.
Since there were two tasks, the group discussed it and decided to split into two teams.
Hugh Finch and Shane Rhodes would be responsible for escorting Carole Underwood to the designated location, while Moira Lynch and Kai York would hunt the monsters.
Regarding this, Shane Rhodes’s group had only one request: do not use the Super delicious orange.
They really didn’t want to experience that feeling of being stuffed to the point of vomiting again.
Moira Lynch and Kai York both had two, or even three, talents to level up, so they wouldn’t get overstuffed. But the other two really couldn’t take it.
"Alright, alright, I get it."
That’s what Moira Lynch said out loud, but inwardly she was thinking, ’A general in the field isn’t always bound by their sovereign’s commands. I’ll just see how things play out.’
’If it comes down to it, I’ll just have the Super delicious orange temporarily store the energy inside itself.’
After all, aside from the somewhat severe side effects, the energy contained within the orbs inside those monsters was immense and incredibly pure.
After the two teams separated, Moira Lynch and Kai York spread their wings and flew into the sky.
"Moira, where are we going to find monsters?"
Moira Lynch’s eyesight was astonishing. Pointing in a certain direction, she said, "Do we even need to look? Isn’t one serving itself up on a silver platter right now?"
In the distance, a black shadow stood. From its indistinct movements, it seemed to be waving at them.
The next second, the black shadow vanished.
"Watch out! Move!"
In the sky, a black shadow as fast as lightning appeared where the two had been.
A split second later, they both dodged at the same time, evading the fatal blow.
"Hello there!"
"Hello, goodbye, and see you never!"
As Kai York raised his hand, a blast of wind swept through, preventing the black shadow from getting any closer. Moira Lynch seized the opportunity to unleash a stream of black fire.
