Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 620 - 610: Zombie 5
After Moira Lynch finished asking her questions, the driver cautiously took the pack of cigarettes, fighting the urge to light one up immediately.
He was a heavy smoker, but he knew how precious this pack was. He’d heard the base commander was an old smoke fiend, and if he could pass these cigarettes up the chain, he might even be able to arrange a job for his siblings.
After seeing the driver off, Moira Lynch returned to the mission hall. She hired two middle-aged women to help clean her place, paying them one point each.
Her place was quite dirty, and she was worried the kitten might get stressed in a new environment, so Moira Lynch kept the Ragdoll Cat with her.
After hiring the women and giving them her key, Moira Lynch didn’t leave right away. Instead, she stayed to look at the other available missions.
She was mainly looking for missions related to Healing Superpower Users, wanting to get an early feel for the market.
But after looking for a long time, she didn’t see any.
Disappointed, Moira Lynch headed for the Outer City.
She had heard there were a total of five Healing Superpower Users in the base. Two of them were high-level and had their own Power Squads, so they weren’t currently in the base.
The remaining three were lower-level and lacked the ability to protect themselves, so they rarely went out.
Of these three, two lived in the Inner City, and one lived in the Outer City.
When she had asked about them earlier, the person’s description of this particular Healing Superpower User had been summed up in a single word: kind.
Upon arriving in the Outer City, Moira Lynch quickly found the Healing Superpower User.
She was in a simple house built of wood. Outside, a sign with two large words written on it hung: "Free Clinic".
’Free clinic?’
’Is it what I think it is?’
Seeing the long line snaking outside the shop, Moira Lynch observed from the side for a while and confirmed that the woman’s treatments were indeed free.
But...
’Didn’t the information say that the three Healing Superpower Users currently in the base were all very low-level?’
Moira Lynch watched the long, ever-growing line of people. With so many, even if they only had minor injuries, treating them one by one would be enough to drain anyone completely.
She changed her position to get a clear view inside the house.
A plainly dressed woman with her hair wrapped in a kerchief was continuously healing people.
Seeing the woman’s pale face, Moira Lynch could tell she had already overexerted herself.
No one understood the feeling of overusing one’s superpower better than she did.
Back then, Moira Lynch had been reckless because she had Recovery Liquid, but this person before her had nothing.
To forcefully use a superpower after it’s already been depleted would only burn through one’s own potential.
Just then, the woman inside seemed unable to continue. Moira Lynch thought she would stop the treatments to rest, but she keenly noticed the woman’s hand sneak under the table.
Hidden by the tabletop, she secretly absorbed a Crystal Core.
Replenished, the woman’s complexion indeed improved, and even her healing speed picked up.
’But didn’t James Shaw say... Never mind. I’d better not interfere in other people’s business, lest I bring trouble upon myself.’
’One look at this woman’s personality tells me we wouldn’t get along.’
She sent a message to the other three people about her arrival at Dawnlight Base, then left the area.
However, she didn’t go home right away, as the cleaning would still take some time.
She’d heard there was a bustling commercial district in the Outer City and decided to check it out.
It was called a commercial district, but it was really just a lively open-air market.
Many people had set up stalls, displaying a dazzling array of goods. There was even food for sale, but it could only be bought with Crystal Cores.
Moira Lynch checked the prices. A pack of instant noodles cost ten Level 1 Crystal Cores, which seemed reasonable.
Level 1 zombies were the most basic type; they were slow, and even an ordinary person could kill them.
After looking around and not finding anything she wanted, Moira Lynch prepared to head back.
But just then, the Ragdoll Cat in her bag suddenly became agitated.
Sensing the Ragdoll Cat’s emotion, Moira Lynch looked in a certain direction.
There was a stall displaying various mutated plants.
That’s right. In this world, it wasn’t just humans who turned into zombies or awakened superpowers; plants and animals had mutated as well.
Some plants had become extremely dangerous, while some that were originally poisonous were now non-toxic and edible.
Clearly, the plants at this stall were of the non-dangerous variety.
As she walked toward the stall, the Ragdoll Cat in her bag grew more and more excited.
Fortunately, she soon found the reason: a pot of mutated catnip.
’No wonder.’
Looking at the lush pot of catnip, Moira Lynch asked, "Mister, how much for this pot of catnip?"
The stall owner was a thin, middle-aged man with sunken cheeks, looking severely malnourished.
When he heard her question, his voice came out weak and trembling. "A pack of instant noodles or... or cookies. Ei-either is fine."
His voice trailed off, sounding completely devoid of confidence.
Before the apocalypse, he had been the owner of a flower shop. Afterward, his shop was left with nothing but various fertilizers, and his meager food supply was quickly consumed.
Most of the plants in his shop had mutated, but in useless ways. Since he hadn’t awakened a superpower, he decided to try his luck selling them.
But for several days in a row, he’d had no customers.
"Patience, scan the plants at this stall."
Moira Lynch summoned Patience from its bionic entity; she felt the energy fluctuations from the plants were very soothing, which was why she had it scan them.
[Master, these are all plants that have undergone a rare positive mutation! You can’t miss this opportunity! Buy them all!]
Hearing Patience say this, Moira Lynch didn’t hesitate for a moment. Without even asking what a "positive mutation" was, she said to the stall owner, "I’ll take all of these plants. If you have any others at home, I’ll take those too."
"Really?" The man’s face was filled with disbelief.
Moira Lynch nodded. "Of course. But I don’t have that much food on me right now. Would you be able to deliver these plants to my house?"
"Of course!" the man replied without hesitation.
If she had actually pulled out a large amount of food right here, he would have been the one with a real problem.
"Oh, right. I don’t have that much instant noodles and cookies. Would other food be okay? Like potatoes, cabbage, sweet potatoes, dried sweet potato strips, dried vegetables, vermicelli, and cured meat?"
James Shaw had given her quite a lot of those things.
"Of course!"
And just like that, Moira Lynch left her address and arranged for him to deliver the goods to her home.
